Non-beverage alcohol consumption among individuals experiencing chronic homelessness in Edmonton, Canada: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Among individuals experiencing homelessness, the prevalence of alcohol use disorder is extremely high. Alcohol-related harms are compounded by the use of non-beverage alcohol (NBA; e.g. rubbing alcohol, cooking wine). The dangers of NBA consumption pose significant risks to the individual and to others when consumed in large quantities and when mixed with other substances. The objectives of this paper are to describe the alcohol consumption patterns of individuals experiencing homelessness, identify substance use patterns, psychological stressors, and related harms associated with

Poor correlation between alcohol concentration in oral fluid and breath in subjects consuming beverages immediately before testing.

INTRODUCTION: In previous research projects and clinical settings, alcohol analysis in oral fluid (saliva) has been used as an alternative to breath or blood alcohol testing. In this study we examined whether it is possible to obtain clinically relevant data regarding alcohol consumption in individuals who recently consumed alcohol by analysing oral fluid samples when the recommended rinsing of the mouth is impossible before sample collection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a study of 89 nightclub patrons in Norway. Before collecting oral fluid samples and performing breath alcohol testi

Liquid chromatographic determination of alcohols in food and beverages with indirect polarimetric detection using a beta-cyclodextrin mobile phase.

An indirect polarimetric detection method for the determination of alcohols has been proposed in liquid chromatography (LC). Optically active mobile-phase additives, such as beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), could be used to visualize optically inactive alcohols in reversed-phase LC. The visualization of alcohols is based on a perturbation of the partition of beta-CD caused by the alcohols. The detection limits of the present system at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 0.031, 0.019, 0.018, 0.013, 0.011, 0.008 and 0.008% (v/v) for ethanol, 2-propanol, 1-propanol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, 2-butanol, 2-me

Simple method for the simultaneous quantification of medium-chain fatty acids and ethyl hexanoate in alcoholic beverages by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector: development of a direct injection method.

Free medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) can negatively influence the fermentation process and taste quality in alcoholic beverages. Ethyl hexanoate is important in providing a fruit-like flavour to drinks, particularly in Japanese sake. In this study, we developed a direct injection method for a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector following the semi-purification of chemical components, such as esters, alcohols and MCFAs in alcoholic beverages. Evaluation of MCFAs by this method gave a limit of detection on the order of sub-ppm and relative standard deviations less than 10% in standard s
