Alcohol misuse in patients with psoriasis: identification and relationship to disease severity and psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Moderate to severe psoriasis is associated with increased alcohol intake and excessive mortality from alcohol-related causes. Alcohol biomarkers provide an objective measure of alcohol consumption. Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) is the single most sensitive and specific alcohol biomarker. OBJECTIVES: To assess alcohol consumption in a cohort of patients with moderate to severe psoriasis using standard alcohol screening questionnaires and biomarkers. We investigated whether there was an association between alcohol intake, anxiety, depression and disease severity. METHODS

[Evaluation of the risk of alcohol consumption and tobacco smoking among 6th year students of the Faculty of Medicine].

Implementing the National Health Program assumed in Poland for the years 2007 2015, family doctors in their everyday work try to contribute to reducing the popularity of tobacco smoking as well as reducing and changing the structure of alcohol consumption, whose aim is to reduce the negative health effects caused by those substances [9]. Non smoking personnel and prohibition of smoking in health care centres are the basis for effective anti-tobacco counsel. The same dependence occurs in the case of alcohol abuse. The aim of the work was to evaluate the knowledge of the effects of alcohol abuse

Project MATCH (Matching Alcoholism Treatment to Client Heterogeneity): rationale and methods for a multisite clinical trial matching patients to alcoholism treatment.

No single treatment approach is effective for all persons with alcohol problems. A more promising strategy involves assigning patients to alternative treatments based on specific needs and characteristics of patients. Project MATCH is a multisite clinical trial designed to test a series of a priori hypotheses on how patient-treatment interactions relate to outcome. Two independent but parallel matching studies are being conducted, one with clients recruited from outpatient settings, the other with patients receiving aftercare treatment following inpatient care. Patients are randomly assigned t

A pilot study of factors associated with resilience to substance abuse in adolescent sons of alcoholic fathers.

This pilot study evaluated the association between substance abuse outcome and putative protective factors in sons of alcoholic fathers. A battery of questionnaires was anonymously self-administered to 24 sons of alcoholic fathers ages 16-19 years to identify relationships between alcohol and/or drug abuse and factors hypothesized to be related to parental alcoholism. Of the 24 subjects, 13 were categorized through self-identification and self-report screening measures as having alcohol and/or drug problems and 11 were categorized as not having substance abuse problems. Boys without substance

Assessing the relationship between male alcohol consumption and intimate partner violence against women in Sub-Saharan Africa: A dual-dataset secondary analysis of recent DHS surveys.

BACKGROUND: Even if the effects of alcohol use on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) are well documented, most of the research were from developed countries. Sub Saharan Africa is famous for higher rates of IPV, yet its relationship with partners alcohol consumption is rarely studied. This project focused on assessing the relationship between partners alcohol consumption and IPV against married women, using dual dataset for men and women. METHODS: We used the recent 2021-2022 Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) dataset for five countries in Sub Saharan Africa. We accessed the dataset on February

[Shifting from heroin to alcohol addiction: descriptive survey].

INTRODUCTION: Addiction is a disease which affects the relation between the person and the object of his addiction. One of the major risks for people addicted to heroin treated with Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) is to develop addiction from another substance, particularly alcohol, while treating heroin addiction, "shifting" this way from heroin addic- tion to alcoholism. OBJECTIVE: describing such "shifting" process within the population taken into considera- tion for this study. METHODS: dA questionnaire made up of 38 items with multiple choice answer was devised. Sexual Assault Research in the Military: Is Oversampling Necessary for Representativeness?

INTRODUCTION: Sexual assault in the U.S. Military is a serious concern. Recruiting representative samples of service members to participate in sexual assault research is essential for understanding the scope of the problem and generating data that can inform prevention and intervention efforts. Accordingly, the current study aims to examine response and completion rates of an anonymous survey of sexual assault and alcohol use among active duty sailors aged 18 to 24 with the overarching goal of achieving a representative sample and informing future recruitment efforts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T

A Latent Class Analysis of Risk Factors for Acquiring HIV Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: Implications for Implementing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Programs.

Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for prescribing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV transmission are broad. In order to better characterize groups who may benefit most from PrEP, we reviewed demographics, behaviors, and clinical outcomes for individuals presenting to a publicly-funded sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic in Providence, Rhode Island, from 2012 to 2014. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subgroups of men who have sex with men (MSM) at highest risk for contracting HIV. A total of 1723 individuals presented for tes

Pathological gambling in hospitalized substance abusing veterans.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that pathological gambling and substance abuse may be more likely to occur together than expected by chance. We examined this possibility as well as explored psychosocial and diagnostic variables that may be associated with this coincidence. METHOD: Of 276 patients who were administered the South Oaks Gambling Screen, 134 subjects were interviewed using a semistructured comprehensive psychiatric questionnaire. Data analysis utilized Student t tests or analysis of variance routines. RESULTS: The rate of comorbid pathological gambling in the sample w

Pregnant women's alcohol consumption and knowledge about its risks: An Israeli survey.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is found in a significant proportion of women during their pregnancies. The only study on the prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Israel was conducted over a decade ago. Thus, our study aimed to assess alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy, associations with demographic characteristics, knowledge of possible risks of prenatal alcohol exposure, and relations among such knowledge, sociodemographic characteristics, and drinking habits. METHODS: A convenience sample of 802 pregnant Israeli women completed an anonymous online questionnair

Typical Alcohol Use and Bystander Intervention: The Mediating Roles of Comfort With Sexism and Bystander Efficacy Among Navy Service Members.

Sexual violence and alcohol use are significant public health issues, with particularly high prevalences in the military. Bystander intervention is an evidence-based approach to prevent sexual assault; however, alcohol use can interfere with bystander behavior. Prior research with male college students suggests that heavier alcohol use may affect bystander intentions and behaviors indirectly by influencing attitudes that promote sexual violence and discourage bystander intervention, such as comfort with sexism. The aim of the present study was to examine whether typical patterns of alcohol use

A test of the perceived norms model to explain drinking patterns among university student athletes.

The author tested the ability of perceived drinking norms to discriminate among drinking patterns in a sample of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I student athletes. He used an anonymous questionnaire to assess 297 athletes, representing 18 teams, at a public university in the Midwest. Alcohol use patterns showed considerable variation, with many athletes (37.1%) abstaining during their season of competition. A discriminant function analysis revealed that higher levels of alcohol involvement are disproportionately found among athletes who began drinking regularly at an

Twelve-step and mutual-help programs for addictive disorders.

Psychiatrists may wonder why both addiction treatment and the 12-step programs recommend abstinence. In his 50-year follow-up of two groups of alcoholics, Vaillant compared those who established secure abstinence with those who continued to drink. Secure abstinence was associated with: Living longer Better mental health Better marriages Being more responsible parents Being successful employees In considering the various routes to secure recovery, Vaillant recommended that clinicians: Offer the patient a nonchemical substitute for alcohol Remind the patient ritually that even one drink can lead

Assessing the prevalence of alcohol consumption in early pregnancy using blood biomarker analysis: a consistent pattern across north-east England?

BACKGROUND: We previously investigated the prevalence of alcohol consumption in early pregnancy in Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, a locality of north-east England. The prevalence was 1.4% based on blood sample biomarker analysis using carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) and 3.5% for gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). AIMS: To supplement this research by investigating the prevalence of alcohol use using identical methods in a different locality of the same region. METHODS: Six-hundred random blood samples taken at the antenatal booking appointment were anonymously analysed fo

Alcohol misuse, alcohol-related risky behaviors, and childhood adversity among soldiers who returned from Iraq or Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Soldiers face a great number of traumatic combat exposures while deployed, which research has shown to contribute to the development of alcohol misuse. In addition to this known risk factor, we hypothesize that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) also contribute to the likelihood that soldiers will engage in these behaviors, even after adjusting for deployment-related factors (mental health problems and combat exposure). METHODS: Soldiers were surveyed anonymously approximately 3 months upon return from Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 2003 t

Evaluating Impulsivity as a Mechanism of Behaviour Change for 12-step Engagement during Alcohol Use Disorder Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: Participation in 12-step groups (TS), such as Alcoholics Anonymous, confers benefits among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD), and one candidate mechanism underlying these effects is reductions in impulsivity. Using a multidimensional assessment of impulsivity, the current study examined impulsive personality and action in a longitudinal cohort of adults with AUD initiating a significant recovery attempt. METHODS: A prospective matched-sample cohort study design compared participants who reported a clinically meaningful increase in TS attendance (i.e., increase of ≥ 1 meet
