Comparing the effects of developmental exposure to alpha lipoic acid (ALA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a dietary supplement that has been used to treat a wide range of diseases, including obesity and diabetes, and have lipid-lowering effects, making it a potential candidate for mitigating dyslipidemia resulting from exposures to the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) family member perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). ALA can be considered a non-fluorinated structural analog to PFOS due to their similar 8-carbon chain and amphipathic structure, but, unlike PFOS, is rapidly metabolized. PFOS has been shown to reduce pancreatic islet area and induce β-cell lipotox

Low levels of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) detected in drinking water in Norway, but elevated concentrations found near known sources.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous contaminants which are also found in drinking water. Concentration levels in drinking water vary widely and range from a very low contribution to total daily exposure for humans to being the major source of uptake of PFAS. PFAS concentrations in Norwegian drinking water has been rarely reported. We investigated concentrations of 31 PFAS in 164 water samples, representing both source water (i.e., before drinking water treatment) and finished drinking water. Samples were taken from 18 different water bodies across Norway. The 17 waterwork

Characterization of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in a community-based sample of infants from Samoa.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent contaminants with documented harmful health effects. Despite increasing research, little attention has been given to studying PFAS contamination in low- and middle-income countries, including Samoa. Using data and biosamples collected through the Foafoaga o le Ola ("Beginning of Life") Study, which recruited a sample of mothers and infants from Samoa, we conducted an exploratory study to describe concentrations of 40 PFAS analytes in infant cord blood collected at birth (n = 66) and infant dried blood spots (DBS) collected at 4 months p

Effects of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate on Cerebellar Cells via Inhibition of Type 2 Iodothyronine Deiodinase Activity.

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been used in a wide variety of industrial and commercial products. The adverse effects of PFOS on the developing brain are becoming of a great concern. However, the molecular mechanisms of PFOS on brain development have not yet been clarified. We investigated the effect of early-life exposure to PFOS on brain development and the mechanism involved. We investigated the change in thyroid hormone (TH)-induced dendrite arborization of Purkinje cells in the primary culture of newborn rat cerebellum. We further examined the mechanism of PFOS on TH signaling by re

Insight into the binding model of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances to proteins and membranes.

Legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have elicited much concern because of their ubiquitous distribution in the environment and the potential hazards they pose to wildlife and human health. Although an increasing number of effective PFAS alternatives are available in the market, these alternatives bring new challenges. This paper comprehensively reviews how PFASs bind to transport proteins (e.g., serum albumin, liver fatty acid transport proteins and organic acid transporters), nuclear receptors (e.g., peroxisome proliferator activated receptors, thyroid hormone receptors and rep

Psychopathological profile before and after bariatric surgery.

Presurgical psychopathological assessment usually focuses on detecting severe mental disorders. However, mild intensity psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern may also influence postsurgical outcomes. The aim was to identify psychopathology and eating behaviour pattern in candidates prepared for bariatric surgery compared to a normative population before and after surgery. A cohort of 32 patients seeking bariatric surgery in a university hospital between March 2016 and March 2017 were evaluated with Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), 36-item EDE-Q and BES before and after surgery. Mechanisms of propeller jet-induced migration, release, and distribution of perfluoroalkyl acids in sediment-water systems.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are continuously accumulated in surface sediments due to extensive and long-term application. However, the mechanisms through which disturbances induced by ship propeller jets at the riverbed cause secondary release of PFAAs from sediments remain unclear. In this study, the effects of different propeller rotational speeds on PFAA migration, release, and distribution in multiphase media were investigated by performing indoor flume experiments combined with particle tracking velocimetry. Moreover, key factors influencing PFAA migration and distribution were identifie

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), trace elements and life history parameters of mass-stranded common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in New Zealand.

Profiles of 33 PFAS analytes and 12 essential and non-essential trace elements were measured in livers of stranded common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) from New Zealand. PFAS concentrations reported were largely comparable to those measured in other marine mammal species globally and composed mostly of long-chain compounds including perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoDA), perfluorotridecanoic acid (PFTrDA) and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (FOSA). PFAS profiles did not vary significantly by location, body condition, or life history. Notably, significant positive cor

A chemical kinetic model for the decomposition of perfluorinated sulfonic acids.

Perfluorinated sulfonic acids (such as perfluorooctanesulfonic, PFOS, and short-chain analogues) are notorious halogenated pollutants that exhibit severe toxicity, even at minute levels. Limited number of experimental studies addressed their thermal decomposition at elevated temperatures. Such scenarios are particularly relevant to open fires and incineration of materials laden with perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). Herein, we construct a detail kinetic model that illustrates major chemical reactions underpinning initial degradation of 1-butanesulfonic acid (CF3(CF2)3SO2OH), as a model compound

Metabolomic responses to pre-chlorinated and final effluent wastewater with the addition of a sub-lethal persistent contaminant in Daphnia magna.

Consumer products such as perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and pharmaceuticals (PCPPs) enter aquatic ecosystems through inefficient removal during wastewater treatment. Often, the sterilization process of wastewater includes the addition of sodium hypochlorite that can react with PCPPs and other organic matter (i.e., dissolve organic matter) to generate disinfection by-products and can cause the final effluent to be more harmful to aquatic organisms. Here, we exposed Daphnia magna to two stages of wastewater, the pre-chlorinated wastewater (PreCl) and the final effluent. In addition, we exp

Chronic exposure to 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate acid (F-53B) induced hepatotoxic effects in adult zebrafish and disrupted the PPAR signaling pathway in their offspring.

As a Chinese-specific alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (commercial name: F-53B) has been used in the metal plating industry for over 40 years. This prevalence of use has resulted in its subsequent detection within the environment, wildlife, and humans. Despite this, however, its hepatotoxic effects on aquatic organisms remain unclear. Here, we characterized the impacts of long-term F-53B exposure on adult zebrafish liver and their offspring. Results showed that the concentration of F-53B was greater in the F0 liver than that in th

Metals and PFAS concentrations in aquatic environments and fish of the Brooks Range, Alaska.

In Alaska, fish are an important subsistence resource for Indigenous and rural residents. Additionally, they can serve as bioindicators that respond to ecosystem changes. Resource development, such as mining, and climate change-impacted natural phenomena like permafrost thaw can introduce contaminants into aquatic systems. Consequently, quantification of contaminant concentrations in aquatic media is needed to track ecosystem and fish health in order to characterize current conditions and identify potential threats. To address gaps in fish contaminant data in northern Alaska, we assessed metal

The hidden cost of green food packaging: Biodegradable plastics release more micro/nanoplastics and enhance PFAS co-exposure.

The global transition toward biodegradable food contact materials (FCMs) aims to mitigate plastic pollution, yet their safety under realistic food service conditions remains underexplored. This study systematically assessed the release of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) from biodegradable (PLA, PBS, PBAT) versus conventional (PP, PE) FCMs under simulated takeout scenarios. Results demonstrated that biodegradable FCMs released significantly higher particle loads-approximately 10-fold more MPs and 2-fold more NPs-than their conventional counterparts. This release was notably exacerbat

Evaluation of a mother-child dyad toxicokinetic model paired with environmental doses for estimation of serum per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in early life.

Contact-based exposure estimation paired with empirically evaluated toxicokinetic (TK) modeling can complement direct measurements of serum concentrations for characterizing individual exposures and provide a proxy for risk assessment. This study examined whether a mother-child dyad TK model paired with PFAS exposure estimates provide reasonable predictions of serum PFAS concentrations for children. A previously published mother-child dyad TK model was used to estimate the child serum concentrations. We modified the model by updating with recent TK parameter estimates. Background intake rates

Effects of oxygen supply mode on linear alkylbenzene sulfonate removal during greywater treatment by oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor.

The oxygen-based membrane biofilm reactor (O2-MBfR) has garnered increasing attention for its ability to remove linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), a widely used surfactant, from greywater for reuse while avoiding foam-related issues. However, the influence of the O2 supply mode on aerobic LAS removal remains unclear. Advancements in this area could improve O2 utilization efficiency, thereby reducing additional costs from increased aeration or advanced membrane materials. In this study, parallel and tandem O2 supply modes were compared by evaluating LAS mineralization and metabolisms in the O

Nest attendance in two Finnish waterfowl species in relation to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and thyroid hormones.

Contamination of aquatic environments with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may disrupt wildlife reproduction by altering hormonal-behavioural pathways. In birds, nest attendance is a key incubation behaviour, mediating embryonic development and hatchability. Yet, the potential associations between PFAS and nest attendance remains underinvestigated. In 2022 and 2023, we quantified plasma PFAS concentrations in breeding females from two Finnish waterfowl species: common goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula), an income breeding cavity nester, and common eiders (Somateria mollissima), a predo

Association between 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid exposure and glucolipid metabolism in Chinese adults: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In China, 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA), commercially designated as F-53B, has been predominantly implemented as the perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) substitute, with its 8:2 derivative showing negligible relevance to population exposure. Previous studies have found that 6:2 Cl-PFESA is closely related to dyslipidemia and disrupted glucose homeostasis, though results remain inconsistent. METHODS: Our study aimed to separately investigate the potential associations of 6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFESA with glucolipid metabolism indicators in Chinese adults.

Mass production of cation-exchange cryogels and their chromatographic adsorption performance for bioseparation.

The preparation of cryogels with enhanced protein adsorption capabilities holds significant promise in bioseparation. The challenge of industrializing cryogels lies in achieving efficient large-scale production while maintaining controllable performance characteristics. In this work, 200 of poly (hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) monolithic cryogels were mass-produced per batch by cryo-polymerization. Subsequently, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid (AMPSA) was employed as the functional monomer and the cation-exchange pHEMA-AMPSA cryogel discs were successfully prepared by monolit
