Evaluation of an 18-micron filter for use in reptile blood transfusions using blood from American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Blood transfusions are a common therapeutic procedure in small animal medicine and have been investigated in some exotic species but little information is available about their safety and efficacy in reptiles. In human pediatrics and small animal practice, the Hemo-Nate18-micro filter is used to prevent embolic clots and particulate waste from entering the recipient during a transfusion. The goal of this study was to determine the hemolytic effect of an 18-micro Hemo-Nate filter for whole blood cell transfusions in reptiles using the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) as a reptili

New dyrosaurid crocodylomorph and evidences for faunal turnover at the K-P transition in Brazil.

The discovery of a new dyrosaurid crocodylomorph from the well-dated Palaeocene deposits of northeastern Brazil sheds new light on the evolutionary history of this extinct group of marine crocodylomorphs that have survived the Cretaceous-Palaeogene (K-P) extinction crisis. Guarinisuchus munizi, the most complete member of this group collected in South America so far, is closely related to the African forms, and this fact suggests that dyrosaurids had crossed the Atlantic Ocean before the K-P boundary and dispersed from there to North America and other parts of South America. This discovery als

Comments on the gonotyl of Proctocaecum macroclemidis (Tkach and Snyder, 2003) n. comb. (Digenea: Acanthostomidae: Acanthostominae), with a key to the genera of acanthostominae and new phylogenetic tree for Proctocaecum Baugh, 1957.

The species recently described as Acanthostomum macroclemidis possesses the gonotyl in the form of a solid muscular pad uniquely diagnostic for species of Proctocaecum and is accordingly transferred to that genus. An artificial key to the 5 acanthostomine genera, as well as an updated phylogenetic hypothesis for the 10 known species of Proctocaecum, based on 11 characters and including 2 species described since the last phylogenetic analysis, are presented. The single most parsimonious phylogenetic tree with a consistency index of 87.5% suggests that Proctocaecum originated in Africa and sprea

Oswaldofilaria medemi n. sp. (Nematoda: Filarioidea), from the smooth-fronted caiman, Paleosuchus trigonatus from Colombia.

A filarial worm, Oswaldofilaria medemi n. sp., obtained from the thoracic wall of an adult colombian caiman, Paleosuchus trigonatus (Schneider, 1801) is described. The new filaria differs from all other species of the genus by the long oesophagus and by differences in size and shape of the spiculae in the male. Microfilariae could not be found in the blood of six P. trigonatus.

Crocodylian nuclear factor kappa B.

We deduced the amino acid (aa) sequence of the nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) protein from genomic data for the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), the estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), and the Indian gharial (Gavialis gangeticus). A 105kDa protein, NFκB1 exhibits complex post-translational processing, multiple mechanisms of activation, and acts as precursor for a p50, a Rel homology transcription factor which influences the expression of key genes for developmental processes, apoptosis, and immune function. The aa sequences of the crocodylian proteins share very high ident

Discovery of facultative parthenogenesis in a new world crocodile.

Over the past two decades, there has been an astounding growth in the documentation of vertebrate facultative parthenogenesis (FP). This unusual reproductive mode has been documented in birds, non-avian reptiles-specifically lizards and snakes-and elasmobranch fishes. Part of this growth among vertebrate taxa is attributable to awareness of the phenomenon itself and advances in molecular genetics/genomics and bioinformatics, and as such our understanding has developed considerably. Nonetheless, questions remain as to its occurrence outside of these vertebrate lineages, most notably in Chelonia

On the Morphological Description of Tracheal and Esophageal Displacement and Its Phylogenetic Distribution in Avialae.

This research examines the evolution and phylogenetic distribution of a peculiar and often overlooked character seen in birds, herein called tracheal and esophageal displacement. Tracheal and esophageal displacement refers to an asymmetrically situated trachea and/or esophagus along the length of the neck. This contrasts with what would be perceived as the "normal" (midsagittal) placement of these organs, wherein the two organs are situated along the ventral midline of the neck with no deviation. A total of forty-two bird species were examined (thirty-six of which came from dissections whereas

Molecular cloning and 3D model of first cytochrome P450 from CYP3A subfamily in saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus).

Cytochrome P450s (CYPs) play critical role in oxidative metabolism of numerous xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. The first CYP3A subfamily member in saltwater crocodile has been cloned and modelled for three-dimensional (3D) structure. The full-length cDNA was obtained employing reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) strategy and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The cDNA sequence of 1659 nucleotides includes 132 nucleotides from 5' untranslated region (UTR), an open reading frame of 1527 nucleotides encoding 509 amino acids designated as CYP3A163. Review. Cell Biology and Immunohistochemical Evidence of the Transition Between an Aquatic to a Terrestrial-Waterproof Epidermis in the Archosaurian Alligator.

The present review summarizes studies on the morphology and cell biology of the developing epidermis in the alligator as an example of archosaurian reptile. From an initial, two-layered epidermis, numerous suprabasal keratinocytes are produced at late stages of embryonic development, some days before hatching. The soft embryonic epidermis contains mucous granules, cysteine-poor IF-keratins and trichohyalin-like proteins produced from genes located in different chromosomal loci, including the EDC (Epidermal Differentiation Complex). These proteins contribute to the mild keratinization of the em

Physiological disruption, genotoxicity, and body condition impairment in Caiman latirostris yearlings exposed to environmentally relevant pesticide concentrations.

Wild populations of Caiman latirostris in South America are potentially exposed to complex mixtures of pesticides used in agricultural practices. These contaminants can disrupt physiological processes, including reproductive success and breeding performance. This study evaluated the effects of 60-day sub-chronic exposure in caiman yearlings to four commercial pesticide formulations: glyphosate (GLY; 2%), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D; 0.12%), imidacloprid (IMI; 0.2%), chlorantraniliprole (CAP; 0.03%), and mixtures: M1 (GLY 1% + 2,4-D 0.06%), M2 (IMI 0.1% + CAP 0.015%), and M3 (M1 + M2)

Determining whether a phosphatic concretion containing a Cretaceous juvenile crocodylian is a coprolite or a non-fecal concretion.

Phosphatic concretions in terrestrial settings are often identified as coprolites based upon their biotic contents and high phosphorus levels. However, recent discoveries have shown that non-fecal origins of fossiliferous phosphatic concretions are more common than originally recognized. Confusion about the taphonomic origin of phosphatic concretions can lead to erroneous paleobiological and paleoenvironmental interpretations, so a set of criteria would be useful to evaluate whether a phosphatic concretion is a coprolite. Here we describe a phosphatic concretion containing a small crocodylian

Sedation and general anaesthesia of crocodilians: a systematic review.

Sedation and general anaesthesia of crocodilians pose unique challenges due to their aggressive nature, poikilothermic physiology, and specific anatomical and physiological characteristics, all factors that complicate crocodilian anaesthesia. This review aimed to systematically review the literature regarding sedation and general anaesthesia of crocodilians with focus on efficacy and impact on vital parameters. A systematic literature search was performed according to PRISMA guidelines on May 2, 2023 in the databases Embase, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Publications were excluded based o

The histology and growth rate of Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) claws.

The histology and growth of reptilian and crocodilian claws (ungues) have been extensively studied; however, Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) claws have not received adequate attention. Furthermore, age estimations for reptilian claws remain unexplored, despite Nile crocodile claws being used in long-term dietary reconstruction studies, assuming certain age-related patterns. In this study, we investigate the histology and growth patterns of Nile crocodile claws, aiming to infer axes for sampling cornified material for radiocarbon dating and establish age estimations for crocodilian claws.

How suture networks improve the protective function of natural structures: A multiscale investigation.

Myriad natural protective structures consist of bone plates joined by convoluted unmineralized (soft) collagenous sutures. Examples of such protective structures include: shells of turtles, craniums of almost all animals (including humans), alligator armour, armadillo armour, and others. The function of sutures has been well researched. However, whether, and if so how, sutures improve protective performance during a predator attack has received limited attention. Sutures are ubiquitous in protective structures, and this motivates the question as to whether sutures optimize the protective funct

Environmental resistance and habitat quality influence dispersal of the saltwater crocodile.

Landscape genetics commonly focuses on the effects of environmental resistance on animal dispersal patterns, but there is an emerging focus on testing environmental effects on emigration and settlement choices. In this study, we used landscape genetics approaches to quantify dispersal patterns in the world's largest crocodilian, the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), and demonstrated environmental influences on three processes that comprise dispersal: emigration, movement and settlement. We found that both environmental resistance and properties of the source and destination catchments
