A case study of human papillomavirus-associated bladder carcinoma developing after urethral condyloma acuminatum.

We report a 35-year-old man with bladder carcinoma developing 2 months after urethral condyloma acuminatum, with an 8-year history of persistent human papilloma virus-58 infection in the urinary tract. DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Human papilloma virus-6 and -58 were detected in the condyloma, whereas human papilloma virus-58 was detected in the carcinoma. In situ hybridization analysis also demonstrated high-risk human papilloma virus-DNA signals in the condyloma and carcinoma tissues. Immunohistochemistry showed that p16-INK4a and mcm-7, surrogate markers of onc

Local and systemic adverse effects of imiquimod therapy for external anogenital warts in men: report of three cases.

Imiquimod is a topical immune response modifier used to treat anogenital warts. Although considered a safe drug, mild to moderate local and systemic side-effects may occasionally occur. We report three cases of local and systemic adverse effects related to imiquimod, including one case that mimicked meningitis, which promptly resolved with drug cessation.

[Papillomavirus and cervical cancer in Chile].

Molecular, clinical and epidemiological studies have established beyond doubt that human papiloma viruses (HPV) cause cervical cancer. The virus is also associated with genital warts and other less common cancers in oropharynx, vulva, vagina and penis. Worldwide, VPH genotypes 16 and 18 are the most common high risk genotypes, detected in near 70% of women with cervical cancer. The discovery of a cause-effect relationship between several carcinogenic microorganisms and cancer open avenues for new diagnostic, treatment and prevention strategies. In this issue of Revista Médica de Chile, two pap

Circumscribed palmar hypokeratosis: two cases and a review of the literature.

A 60-year-old female and a 59-year-old male each presented with a solitary circumscribed patch of depressed skin of the right thenar palm and right sole, respectively. Both lesions were present for approximately 30 years without a history of trauma or other inciting incident. Histologically, the lesions showed a well-demarcated abrupt decrease in the thickness of the stratum corneum with a central area of thinned stratum corneum and hypogranulosis. Inflammation was absent. Ultrastructurally, keratin filaments were evident in the stratum corneum, and a diminished granular cell layer was apparen

Human papillomavirus genotype concordance between Anyplex II HPV28 and linear array HPV genotyping test in anogenital samples.

Anyplex II HPV-28 (HPV-28) can detect individually 28 HPV genotypes. We assessed the agreement between linear array HPV genotyping (LA-HPV) and HPV-28 for detection of 27 HPV genotypes in 410 stored anogenital samples (75 anal samples, 335 physician-collected cervical samples) collected over 5 years from 410 individuals (13 men, 397 women), including 202 HIV-seropositive individuals. HPV DNA was detected in 393 (95.9%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 93.4-97.4) and 382 (93.2%, 95% CI: 90.3-95.3) samples with HPV-28 and LA-HPV (p = 0.13), respectively, for a good agreement of 96.3% (κ = 0.65). The Pathogenesis of Giant Condyloma Acuminatum (Buschke-Lowenstein Tumor): An Overview.

Giant condyloma acuminatum, also known as Buschke-Lowenstein tumor (BLT), is a rare disease of the anogenital region. BLT is considered a locally aggressive tumor of benign histological appearance, but with the potential for destructive growth and high recurrence rates. BLT development is strongly associated with infection with low-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs), mostly HPV-6 and -11. Immunity to HPVs plays a crucial role in the natural control of various HPV-induced lesions. Large condyloma acuminata are frequently reported in patients with primary (e.g., DOCK8 or SPINK5 deficiencies) and

One-Dose Human Papillomavirus Vaccination and the Risk of Genital Warts: A Danish Nationwide Population-based Study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that 1-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination may protect significantly against HPV-related disease. We provide nationwide, real-world data on the risk of genital warts (GWs) after <3 vaccine doses. METHODS: All Danish women born in 1985-2003 were identified, and individual-level vaccination data were retrieved. The cohort was followed up for first occurrence of GWs until 31 December 2016. Using Poisson regression, we calculated incidence rates (IRs) of GWs per 100 000 person-years and IR ratios (IRRs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (

The prognostic role of medical comorbidities in surgically treated human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Prognostic factors specific to surgically managed human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV(+)OPSCC) are not fully understood. Medical co-morbidities may have an impact on survival after surgical treatment. We aimed to identify co-morbidities associated with distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in HPV(+)OPSCCs. METHODS: This is a retrospective case series of HPV(+)OPSCC patients at a tertiary referral center from 2007 to 2016. All patients in the study underwent primary intent-to-cure transoral resection w

Incidence and mortality from cervical cancer and other malignancies after treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Although local treatments for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) are highly effective, it has been reported that treated women remain at increased risk of cervical and other cancers. Our aim is to explore the risk of developing or dying from cervical cancer and other human papillomavirus (HPV)- and non-HPV-related malignancies after CIN treatment and infer its magnitude compared with the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Eligibility criteria: Studies with registry-based follow-up reporting cancer incidence or mortality af

Advances in therapeutic vaccines for treating human papillomavirus-related cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

AIM: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the etiologic agent of the majority of cervical intraepithelial lesions (CIN) and cervical cancers. While prophylactic HPV vaccines prevent infections from the main high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer, alternative nonsurgical and nonablative therapeutics to treat HPV infection and preinvasive HPV diseases have been experimentally investigated. Therapeutic vaccines are an emerging investigational strategy. This review aims to introduce the results of the main clinical trials on the use of therapeutic vaccines for treating HPV infection and -rel

The prevalence of human papillomavirus in oropharyngeal cancer in a New Zealand population.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in New Zealand (NZ) has more than doubled over the last 14 years with 126 cases in 2010. Overseas studies have shown that human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a significant role in the development of these cancers. However, the role of HPV in OPC and the burden on the NZ health system is unclear. AIM: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and the genotypes of HPV associated with OPC in New Zealand. METHODS: In this study, 621 OPC were identified from cancer registry data from 1996-98, 2003-05, and 2010-12. Biopsies of 267 cas

A discrete population of squamocolumnar junction cells implicated in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer.

Infection by carcinogenic human papillomaviruses (HPV) results in precancers [cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)] and cancers near the ectoendocervical squamocolumnar (SC) junction of the cervix. However, the specific cells targeted by HPV have not been identified and the cellular origin of cervical cancer remains elusive. In this study, we uncovered a discrete population of SC junctional cells with unique morphology and gene-expression profile. We also demonstrated that the selected junctional biomarkers were expressed by a high percentage of high-grade CIN and cervical cancers associat

Attribution of human papillomavirus types to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive cancers in Southern China.

The attribution of individual human papillomavirus (HPV) types to cervical neoplasia, especially intraepithelial lesions, varies ethnogeographically. Population-specific data are required for vaccine cost-effectiveness assessment and type replacement monitoring. HPV was detected from 2,790 Chinese women (444 invasive cervical cancers [ICC], 772 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia [CIN] grade 3, 805 CIN2 and 769 CIN1. The attribution of each HPV type found in multiple-type infections was approximated by the fractional contribution approach. Multiple-type infection was common and correlated inver
