Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a heterogeneous metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and progressive β cell dysfunction. Deoxycalyxin A (DCA), a unique diarylheptanoid-chalcone hybrid isolated from Alpinia katsumadai, was identified as a novel stimulator of GLP 1 secretion in both STC-1 (EC50: 10.7 μM) and NCI-H716 (EC50: 13.4 μM) cells. Oral administration of DCA (40 and 80 mg/kg) in db/db mice significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, ameliorated glucose intolerance and insulin resistance by enhancing endogenous GLP-1 secretion, and lowered the total serum cholesterol

Androgenetic alopecia is associated with testosterone-mediated anagen-to-catagen transition and matrix keratinocyte apoptosis in hair follicle cells. Activation of Nox isozymes is involved in testosterone-mediated keratinocyte apoptosis, leading to androgenetic alopecia. This indicates that Nox isozymes can serve as therapeutic targets for androgenetic alopecia. The isolated compounds from natural products were screened to evaluate their ROS-inhibition efficacy and it was found that 1'S-1'-acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA, 26), a natural compound isolated from Alpinia galanga (L.) Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced pneumonia has become a major global public health challenge due to its high mortality and drug resistance. Essential oils, derived from plants, offer a promising solution to combat resistance owing to their low cytotoxicity and multitarget antimicrobial properties. This study designed a phenylboronic acid (PBA)-functionalized liposomal codelivery system (P-Lip@CE) to reverse MRSA resistance by synergistically delivering cefazolin sodium (Cefas) and Alpinia zerumbet essential oil (EOFAZ). The dual-drug system exhibited good storage stab

Cyperi Rhizoma (CR), a globally invasive weed threatening major crops, paradoxically represents an underutilized resource for sustainable nutraceutical development. In order to transform this agricultural pest into a viable functional food ingredient, this review explores how culinary-inspired processing (vinegar, wine, salt, etc.) and food-compatible botanical pairings synergistically enhance the bioactivity of CR. We demonstrate that traditional processing deglycosylates flavonoids and modulates volatile oils, boosting bioavailability and analgesic, antidepressant efficacy validated in vivo.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), including its more severe manifestation metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), poses global public health threats with limited therapeutics. Here, the role of alnustone is explored, a natural compound derived from the traditional Chinese herb Alpinia katsumadai Hayata, in the treatment of MASLD and MASH. It is shown that alnustone administration potently reduces serum triacylglycerol levels, reverses liver steatosis, and alleviates insulin resistance in both male and female MASLD mice. It also effectively ameli

Kaempferia galanga volatile oil (KVO), the main effective component of the medicinal plant Kaempferia galanga L., possesses a variety of pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-angiogenic activities and has therapeutic potential for gastric ulcer (GU). However, poor solubility as well as instability limits the clinical application of KVO. In this study, K. galanga volatile oil self-microemulsion solids (KVO-SSMEDDS) were prepared to improve its bioavailability and stability, and the therapeutic effects were evaluated in a rat model with GU. The ratio of oil

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive brain disorder, and one of the most common causes of dementia and amnesia. Due to the complex pathogenesis of AD, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Although scientists have made increasing efforts to develop drugs for AD, no effective therapeutic agents have been found.
OBJECTIVES: Natural products and their constituents have shown promise for treating neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Thus, in-depth study of medical plants, and the main active ingredients thereof against AD, is necessary to devise therapeutic agents.

Malignant melanoma is an aggressive type of cancer and the deadliest form of skin cancer. Even though enormous efforts have been undertaken, in particular the treatment options against the metastasizing form are challenging and the prognosis is generally poor. A novel therapeutical approach is the application of secondary plant constituents occurring in food and food products. Herein, the effect of the dietary chalcone cardamonin, inter alia found in Alpinia species, was tested using human malignant melanoma cells. These data were compared to cardamonin treated normal melanocytes and dermal fi

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most frequent degenerative central nervous system disorders affecting older adults. Dopaminergic neuron failure in the substantia nigra is a pathological sign connected with the motor shortfall of PD. Due to their low teratogenic and adverse effect potential, medicinal herbs have emerged as a promising therapy option for preventing and curing PD and other neurodegenerative disorders. However, the mechanism through which natural compounds provide neuroprotection against PD remains unknown. While testing compounds in vertebrates such as mice is prohibitivel

Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality, contributing to 9.6 million deaths globally in 2018 alone. Although several cancer treatments exist, they are often associated with severe side effects and high toxicities, leaving room for significant advancements to be made in the field. In recent years, several phytochemicals from plants and natural bioresources have been extracted and tested against various human malignancies using both in vitro and in vivo preclinical model systems. Cardamonin, a chalcone extracted from the Alpinia species, is an example of a natural therapeutic agent that
