Noninvasive Detection of Ammonia in the Breath of Hemodialysis Patients Using a Highly Sensitive Ammonia Sensor Based on a Polypyrrole/Sulfonated Graphene Nanocomposite.

In this work, we fabricated fast-responsive and highly sensitive chemiresistive sensors based on nanocomposites of polypyrrole and graphitic materials such as graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (RGO), and sulfonated graphene (SRGO) by an in situ chemical oxidative polymerization method. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the operating temperature of different nanocomposites were inve

Measurement of Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulfide Emission from Three Typical Dairy Barns and Estimation of Total Ammonia Emission for the Chinese Dairy Industry.

There is an urgent need for accurate measurement for emissions of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in dairy barns in order to obtain reliable emission inventories and to develop and evaluate abatement strategies. This experiment was performed on three dairy farms in central China during 14 consecutive days in the winter 2020. Concentrations of NH3 and H2S were measured every two hours. The samples were taken inside and outside of barns from 7 sites at two heights (at floor and 1.5 over the floor). The results show that the average NH3 concentration was 2.47 mg/m3 with a maximum of 4.62

Alkaline environmental pH has no effect on ammonia excretion in the mudskipper Periophthalmodon schlosseri but inhibits ammonia excretion in the related species Boleophthalmus boddaerti.

Experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of alkaline environmental pH on urea and ammonia excretion rates and on tissue urea, ammonia, and free amino acid concentrations in two mudskippers, Periophthalmodon schlosseri and Boleophthalmus boddaerti. Periophthalomodon schlosseri is known to be capable of actively excreting ammonia. The rate of ammonia excretion in B. boddaerti exposed to 50% seawater (brackish water, BW) at pH 9 decreased significantly during the first 2 d of exposure when compared with that of specimens exposed to pH 7 or 8. This suggested that B. boddaerti was depende

Evolution of dipole-dipole dynamics in cold ammonia collisions.

Cold polar molecules offer fascinating prospects for ultracold chemistry and quantum physics. However, their inherent collision properties remain largely unknown, as it seems fundamentally impossible to reach sufficiently low energies by merging two beams of molecules with substantial dipole moments. Here we report measurements of state-to-state cross-sections for collisions between ammonia isotopologues at energies between 0.3 and 100 cm-1 using an advanced beam-merging protocol. We experimentally observed a local maximum in the cross-sections, which indicates that the dipole moments can swit

Low extracellular pH protects cancer cells from ammonia toxicity.

Ammonia is a natural waste product of cellular metabolism which, through its lysosomotropic ability, can have detrimental effects on various cellular functions. Increased levels of ammonia were recently detected in the interstitial fluid of various tumours, substantiating that high ammonia concentrations are a pathophysiological condition in the tumour microenvironment, alongside hypoxia and acidosis. Since little is known about how cancer cells respond to elevated levels of ammonia in the tumour microenvironment, we investigated how a panel of cancer cell lines derived from solid tumours beha

Fructose overconsumption impairs hepatic manganese homeostasis and ammonia disposal.

Arginase, a manganese (Mn)-dependent enzyme, is indispensable for urea generation and ammonia disposal in the liver. The potential role of fructose in Mn and ammonia metabolism is undefined. Here we demonstrate that fructose overconsumption impairs hepatic Mn homeostasis and ammonia disposal in male mice. Fructose overexposure reduces liver Mn content as well as its activity of arginase and Mn-SOD, and impairs the clearance of blood ammonia under liver dysfunction. Mechanistically, fructose activates the Mn exporter Slc30a10 gene transcription in the liver in a ChREBP-dependent manner. Hepatic

Saul Brusilow: Understanding and treating diseases of ammonia toxicity.

This article reviews the scientific career and accomplishments of the late Dr. Saul Brusilow, Professor of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Brusilow's career was focused on diseases involving hyperammonemia. He and his colleagues developed a set of drugs that could lower ammonia levels in patients with genetic disorders of the urea cycle by providing alternative pathways for the synthesis of excretable nitrogenous molecules. Those drugs and their derivatives represent one of the earliest and most successful drug therapies for genetic diseases. Turning their attention to brain swelling caused b

Respiratory responses to external ammonia in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The effects of high external ammonia (HEA) exposure on breathing and the potential involvement of ammonia transporting Rh proteins in ammonia sensing were assessed in larval and adult zebrafish. Acute exposure of adults to either 250 or 500 μM (NH4)2SO4 caused increases in ventilation amplitude (AVENT) without affecting frequency (fVENT), resembling the ventilatory response to hypercapnia rather than hypoxia, during which fVENT was increased exclusively. The hyperventilatory response to HEA was prevented by hyperoxia, indicating that control of breathing through ammonia sensing is likely secon

Anaerobic digestion of dairy manure with enhanced ammonia removal.

Poor ammonia-nitrogen removal in methanogenic anaerobic reactors digesting animal manure has been reported as an important disadvantage of anaerobic digestion (AD) in several studies. Development of anaerobic processes that are capable of producing reduced ammonia-nitrogen levels in their effluent is one of the areas where further research must be pursued if AD technology is to be made more effective and economically advantageous. One approach to removing ammonia from anaerobically digested effluents is the forced precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (MgNH4PO4 x 6H2O), com

[Adaptation of Biomerieux enzymatic UV ammonia on Konelab analysers].

INTRODUCTION: Circulating ammonia in normal patients is relatively low, despite the fact that ammonia is continually produced from endogenous amino acid metabolism. The physiopathological interest of plasmatic ammonia determination lies primarily in its relationships to hepatic insufficiency (cirrhotic or neoplasic), or the diagnosis and the forecast of the Reye's syndrome. OBJECTS: This study describes an evaluation of plasmatic ammonia determination by the UV end point enzymatic method using GLDH on KONELAB(TM) analyzers. METHODS: The glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH : EC.1.4.1.3) catalyses t

Protective effect of ammonia against reflux esophagitis in rats.

Although several recent studies have reported that curing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) may result in the development of reflux esophagitis (RE), the mechanisms leading to this complication are unknown. One by product of H. pylori infection is ammonia, which serves as an acid neutralizer. The aim of this study was to clarify whether ammonia, which is produced during H. pylori infection, has a protective effect on the esophagus. Eight-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fasted for 24 hrs. Under anesthesia, both the pylorus and limiting ridge were simultaneously ligated. One hour postligati

Production of [13N]ammonia applicable to low energy accelerators.

We have developed a technique for the rapid conversion of the nitrogen-13 induced in a graphite target into nitrogen oxides. This was accomplished by heating the graphite target in a stream of pure oxygen at 800 degrees C. Less than 20% of the radioactivity was found in the form of [13N]nitrogen. The rest of the radioactivity was efficiently trapped in a solid-phase medium that consisted of an aqueous solution of 5% NaOH dispersed in silica gel. The radioactivity from this solid-phase medium was eluted with water (94% recovery) and found to be in the form of 13NO2- (99%). This was subsequently

Electrophysiology of ammonia transport in renal straight proximal tubules.

To test for electrogenic transport of ammonium ions in straight proximal renal tubules, isolated perfused tubules have been exposed to peritubular ammonium ions during continuous recording of cell membrane potential. As a result, 20 mmol/liter NH4+ leads to a rapid, reversible depolarization of the cell membrane by 9.0 +/- 0.3 mV (N = 86). This depolarization is not significantly affected by 10 mmol/liter barium or 0.1 mmol/liter amiloride on both sides of the epithelium, but is significantly blunted by omission of extracellular bicarbonate and CO2 (3.8 +/- 0.4 mV, N = 9), by 1 mmol/liter acet

Excretion of ammonia by rat kidney during metabolic alkalosis.

In rat kidney, proximal tubular and final urinary ammonia concentration are finite. They are lower in animals with metabolic alkalosis than in controls. A positive correlation between ammonia concentration and water removal (as indicated by fluid to plasma ratios for inulin) was found. A comparison of tubular fluid to plasma concentration ratios for inulin and ammonia indicates that more ammonia enters proximal tubular fluid than appears in the final urine. These observations indicate that ammonia is probably secreted primarily at the level of the proximal tubule and then undergoes reabsorptio

A model of blood-ammonia homeostasis based on a quantitative analysis of nitrogen metabolism in the multiple organs involved in the production, catabolism, and excretion of ammonia in humans.

Increased blood ammonia (NH3) is an important causative factor in hepatic encephalopathy, and clinical treatment of hepatic encephalopathy is focused on lowering NH3. Ammonia is a central element in intraorgan nitrogen (N) transport, and modeling the factors that determine blood-NH3 concentration is complicated by the need to account for a variety of reactions carried out in multiple organs. This review presents a detailed quantitative analysis of the major factors determining blood-NH3 homeostasis - the N metabolism of urea, NH3, and amino acids by the liver, gastrointestinal system, muscle,

Plasma concentration of urea, ammonia, glutamine around calving, and the relation of hepatic triglyceride, to plasma ammonia removal and blood acid-base balance.

Two experiments were conducted to test the following two hypotheses: 1) fatty liver could hamper hepatic conversion of ammonia to urea and increase circulating ammonia or Gln% [Gln% = Gln x 100/(Gln + Glu)] in cows around parturition; 2) decreased ureagenesis might cause alkalosis and in turn reduce blood Ca. In the first experiment, 14 Holstein cows were monitored from 27 d prepartum to 35 d postpartum. There was a rise in circulating ammonia and Gln% at calving, suggesting an increase in ammonia passing to and through the liver. Stepwise regression analysis revealed the following relationshi

Investigation on the reduction in unburned ammonia and nitrogen oxide emissions from ammonia direct injection SI engine by using SCR after-treatment system.

Currently generated nitrogen oxides (NOx) and unburned ammonia (NH3) can be converted into nitrogen and moisture that are harmless to the human body and environment using selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The concentrations of NOx and unburned NH3 emitted from the ammonia combustion engines are significantly higher than those emitted by engines using existing hydrocarbon fuels. In this study, ammonia, a representative carbon-free fuel, was used in spark ignition engines for existing passenger vehicles to identify the trends in exhaust gases emitted from engines and conduct experiments on af
