Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease. Half of patients experience debilitating fatigue, which is currently untreatable. Previous studies have shown muscle bioenergetic abnormalities in PBC, including increased muscle acidosis with exercise linked to the antimitochondrial antibody (AMA) diagnostic of the disease, and reduced anaerobic threshold. In this study we addressed the hypothesis that fatigue in PBC is driven by muscle bioenergetic abnormality related to AMA, and that AMA reduction with B-cell depletion therapy will improve fatigue. In our single-cente

The main purpose of this study was to investigate metabolic changes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and to find out whether the statements on training intensity in the literature can also be applied to patients in rehabilitation. Twenty-four male patients, 16 wk (range: 11-21 wk) postoperative, volunteered to participate in the study. A new four-stage test with constant time and load increments on the legpress in the closed kinetic chain (CKC) was performed. Evaluative variables were the aerobic and anaerobic threshold, force at exhaustion, and the maximum strength. Besides the

BACKGROUND: Freediving is defined as an activity where athletes repetitively dive and are exposed to long efforts with limited oxygen consumption. Therefore, anaerobic features are expected to be an important facet of diving performance. This study aimed to investigate differences in anaerobic capacity and local muscle oxygenation in spearfisherman and freedivers.
METHODS: The sample of participants included 17 male athletes (nine freedivers, and eight spearfishermen), with an average age of 37.0±8.8 years, training experience of 10.6±9.5 years, body mass of 82.5±9.5 kg and height of 184.2±5.

PURPOSE: As cross-country sprint competitions rely on maximal-effort durations of ∼3 min, a significant anaerobic energy contribution is expected. Anaerobic energy production during supramaximal exercise has been estimated in different sports from the accumulated oxygen deficit (ΣO₂ deficit) but, to date, not in cross-country skiing. Therefore, this study investigated the relative contribution of the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems to performance in ski skating sprint time trials using V1 and V2 techniques.
METHODS: Twelve elite senior male cross-country skiers participated in the study

PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the agreement between ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2), and heart rate variability (HRV) thresholds (HRVT1 and HRVT2) based on the alpha 1 index of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA a1) in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Validating HRV-based thresholds could provide a cost-effective alternative for individualised exercise intensity prescription, improving safety and efficacy in exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programmes.
METHODS: Twenty CHF patients (13 males, 7 females) performed a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) on a cycle

PURPOSE: Although cardiac troponin I (cTnI) increase following strenuous exercise has been observed, the development of exercise-induced myocardial edema remains unclear. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) native T1/T2 mapping is sensitive to the pathological increase of myocardial water content. Therefore, we evaluated exercise-induced acute myocardial changes in recreational cyclists by incorporating biomarkers, echocardiography and CMR.
METHODS: Nineteen male recreational participants (age: 48 ± 5 years) cycled the 'L'étape du tour de France" (EDT) 2021' (175 km, 3600 altimeters). One week b

Purpose: To examine the association between day-to-day resting cardiac parasympathetic variability over consecutive non-training days (i.e. weekend) and accumulated exercise stress when quantified using indices of cardiovascular strain. Methods: Twelve international calibre female field hockey players training as part of a national team were participants over a four-week mesocycle prior to a 2016 Olympic qualifying tournament. On-field exercise stress was examined using heart rate (HR) dynamics and quantified as; (1) training load and (2) time (min) spent above anaerobic threshold. The square

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of level vs. graded skate skiing on capillary blood lactate (B(La)), heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (V(O2)), and training intensity prescriptions. Eleven Nordic skiers completed 2 submaximal skate roller skiing treadmill protocols during which intensity was increased either by grade (G(inc)) or by speed (S(inc)). The protocols were compared for prethreshold BLa, HR, and V(O2) at lactate threshold (LT) and the HR/V(O2) relationship. Additionally, double-pole (primarily upper body) and skating (arms and legs combined) protocols were used

The aims of this study were to document the effect terrain has on the physiological responses and work demands (power output) of riding a typical mountain bike cross-country course under race conditions. We were particularly interested in determining whether physiological measures relative to mass were better predictors of race performance than absolute measures. Eleven A-grade male cross-country mountain bike riders (VO2max 67.1 +/- 3.6 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) performed 2 tests: a laboratory-based maximum progressive exercise test, and a 15.5-km (six 2.58-km laps) mountain bike cross-country t

BACKGROUND: The present study aimed to investigate the gender- and age-related profiles of junior speed skaters in strength capabilities during both single and repetitive maximal contractions.
METHODS: The subjects were 19 male (age = 17.1 +/- 0.2 years, X +/- SE) and 13 female skaters (16.9 +/- 0.2 years). Isokinetic knee extension torque (T) developed concentrically in a single contraction at three constant velocities of 1.05, 3.14 and 5.24 rad/sec and 50 repetitive maximal contractions at 3.14 rad/sec was measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. In addition, a B-mode ultrasound apparatus

In a retrospective study in elite biathletes we investigated to what extent spiroergometric data, determinations of the anaerobic threshold and measurements of heart volume were related to former training programs, respectively subsequent achievements in competition. Between 1980 and 1987 top athletes of international (team A) as well as of national class (team B) underwent maximal graded treadmill tests in the laboratory. Twice a year maximal oxygen uptake (ml/kg.bw/min), maximal treadmill velocity (km/h), oxygen uptake and treadmill velocity at the anaerobic threshold (defined at 4 mmol/l la

Physical training for patients with internal diseases differs in many points to the physical activity recommended for health maintenance. Cardiac patients are usually limited by symptoms (angina, ECG abnormalities, anaerobic threshold) therefore the intensity of the training (monitored by heart rate or ECG) must be setted by an ergometer exercise testing. Patients with obliterative peripheral artery disease may surpass the local anaerobic threshold during interval-type loads. Blood pressure limits the training intensity of the hypertensive patients if not an organ lesion. COPD patients use the

The purpose of this study was to assess hemodynamic and respiratory measures of submaximal and maximal exercise performance in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation, before and one month after cardioversion to sinus rhythm. Restoration of sinus rhythm (n = 16) produced significant reductions in resting and exercise heart rates, 14 percent to 20 percent (p < 0.01). Due to a proportionately larger increase in stroke volume, cardiac output increased by 9 percent during low-level exercise (p < 0.01) and by 7 percent during exercise above the anaerobic threshold (p < 0.05). Minute ventilation w

From 1990 to 1992 we carried out 158 Conconi-Tests on children aged from 7 to 15. Of these tests 128 were carried out on the 400 m-track, and further 30 were Conconi-Intervall-Tests (Probst-Test). The testing was done on the members of the Swiss Figure-Skating Team, on the best runners of the Volksbank Grand Prix St. Gallen 1991/92 and on the youngest girls and boys of the Athletic Club Brühl St. Gallen. 89 tests were performed on girls and 69 tests on boys. In 84% of all cases (133 tests) the results were open to unambiguous interpretation, and were determined by the anaerobic threshold, 14%
