Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne disease endemic to the northeastern United States but remains extremely rare in Japan. We report an imported case of HGA in a 77-year-old man who had recently traveled from the United States. He presented with a 5-day history of fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite, followed by altered consciousness. Laboratory findings revealed thrombocytopenia, elevated transaminases, and increased creatine kinase levels. Computed tomography was unremarkable except for mild splenomegaly. Considering his recent stay in Bemidji, Minnesota-a region with a h

Equine granulocytic anaplasmosis (EGA) is a tick-borne disease caused by Anaplasma (A.) phagocytophilum. In Central, Northern, Western, and Eastern Europe, ticks of the Ixodes (I.) ricinus/I. persulcatus complex, in Germany mainly I. ricinus, are considered as vectors. Ixodes ricinus ticks show peaks of activity during the spring and summer months, particularly April to July. Changing climatic conditions, however, have meanwhile led to a year-round risk of tick exposure and thus infections with A. phagocytophilum. The presented case report underlines the seasonal peak phase of the infection ri

Bovine anaplasmosis causes considerable economic losses in dairy cattle production systems worldwide, ranging from $300 million to $900 million annually. It is commonly detected through rectal temperature, blood smear microscopy, and packed cell volume (PCV). Such methodologies are laborious, costly, and difficult to systematically implement in large-scale operations. The objectives of this study were to evaluate (1) rumination and activity data collected by Hr-Tag sensors (SCR Engineers Ltd.) in heifer calves exposed to anaplasmosis; and (2) the predictive ability of recurrent neural networks

Climate change ranks among the most important issues globally, affecting geographic distributions of vectors and pathogens, and inducing losses in livestock production among many other damaging effects. We characterized the potential geographic distribution of the ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, an important vector of babesiosis and anaplasmosis globally. We evaluated potential geographic shifts in suitability patterns for this species in two periods (2050 and 2070) and under two emissions scenarios (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). Our results anticipate increases in suitability worldwide, parti

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is the agent of tick-borne fever, equine, canine and human granulocytic anaplasmosis. The common route of A. phagocytophilum transmission is through a tick bite, the main vector in Europe being Ixodes ricinus. Despite the apparently ubiquitous presence of the pathogen A. phagocytophilum in ticks and various wild and domestic animals from Europe, up to date published clinical cases of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) remain rare compared to the worldwide status. It is unclear if this reflects the epidemiological dynamics of the human infection in Europe or if the

We report a rare case of a 53-year-old man with no significant past medical history who reported multiple tick bites within a 2-month period. The patient reported not "feeling well" for the 2 ½ weeks. He complained of generalized body aches, pains, and chills. He did not report nausea, vomiting, or yellowish discoloration of the eyes or skin. He presented to the emergency room with syncope preceded by severe abdominal pain. Upon presentation, he was pale and hypotensive. He had not experienced any trauma. Computed tomography revealed a splenic rupture, hemoperitoneum, and active extravasation

Direct diagnoses were made by using - blood smears and nested PCR (nPCR) tests on 309 blood samples from crossbred dairy cattle in the municipality of Ibicaraí, Bahia. From diagnostic blood smear slides, the observed parasitic frequencies were 31.1% for Anaplasma marginale and 20.4% for Babesia sp. From nPCR diagnoses, they were 63% for A. marginale, 34% for Babesia bigemina and 20.4% for Babesia bovis. There were significant differences (P <0.01) between the two diagnostic methods (nPCR and blood smear slides). The compliance obtained from the kappa test was 0.41 and 0.48 for A. marginale and

Outbreaks of tick-borne disease cases in Santa Catarina, Brazil are known, but the presence of the pathogen DNA has never been determined. In this study, the first survey of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia bovis DNA on blood samples of 33 cattle from an outbreak in Ponte Alta Municipality, Santa Catarina, Brazil, has been carried out. A multiplex PCR detected 54.5% of animals were co-infected with 2 or 3 parasites, while 24.2% were infected with only 1 species. The most prevalent agent was B. bigemina (63.6%) followed by A. marginale (60.6%). This is the first report of tick

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) cases occur everywhere in the Republic of Altai. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is transmitted to humans by at least three genera of ticks: Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Haemaphysalis. The risk of the infection is higher in the northern part of the republic. Most patients with HGA show serologic evidence of coinfection with North Asian tick typhus and other tick-borne diseases. The high probability of HGA concurrent with other tick-borne infections requires an integrated approach to preventing these diseases in the Republic of Altai.

Anaplasma phagocytophilum, the causative agent of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), shares the same enzootic life cycle as Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. Although La Crosse, WI, is a well-recognized Lyme disease focus with an abundance of Ixodes scapularis vector ticks and the first documentation of HGA occurred in patients from northwestern Wisconsin, local transmission of A. phagocytophilum has not to date been documented. In this study, we evaluated DNA extracted from 201 ticks captured locally by a real-time PCR that targeted a unique region within msp2, an

Four alternative approaches to the control of anaplasmosis and babesiosis as a complex of diseases are identified: no active control, tick control, immunization, and chemoprophylaxis. These methods may be utilized in one of five strategies: tick eradication with or without concurrent immunization, tick reduction with or without concurrent immunization or no active control. Factors influencing the choice of strategy are discussed.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of comprehensive, large cohort studies investigating the predictors for severity and hospitalization in human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including all cases of HGA identified by positive blood Anaplasma polymerase chain reaction (PCR) at the Mayo Clinic Laboratory, Rochester between 2011 and 2021. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to evaluate risk factors associated with hospitalization.
RESULTS: A total of 465 cases were identified. Of those, 67% (n = 312) were managed in the outpatient settin

Rhipicephalus microplus causes high economic losses for Uruguay; the country is divided into a R. microplus-free area and an endemic area. The aim of this research was to evaluate the R. microplus and tick fever situation in Uruguay and the feasibility of implementing R. microplus control or elimination programs to reduce the number of infested farms. A representative survey was performed to determine the number of infested farms, the number of farms with outbreaks of tick fever and the control and preventive measures being used. Control or elimination programs using generational treatment wer

Most of the dogs studied for the prevalence of CVBD have previously received acaricidal and insecticidal treatments. In the present work, a very specific population of dogs (Group 1) that had never been treated against ticks and mosquitoes was studied. Moreover, the territory occupied by this population has also never been treated, because it is a protected area--Voronezh Natural Reserve. Canine patients from veterinary clinics (Group 2) that had been treated against VBD vectors were studied for comparison. Eighty-two dogs (Group 1) were enrolled in June, 2008. Blood samples were tested using

Granulocytic anaplasmosis is an emerging infectious disease affecting dogs and humans in the United States and other regions of the world. Relatively few cases have been described in pregnant women, and perinatal transmission appears to occur infrequently in humans. Infection in pregnant dogs has not been reported. Diagnosis of infection during pregnancy poses therapeutic challenges, because doxycycline, the treatment of choice, is teratogenic. Also, infection during pregnancy may result in more severe disease. When infection is diagnosed after parturition, knowledge of the risk of perinatal t

A multiplex PCR/DNA probe assay was used to monitor Babesia bovis, B. bigemina and Anaplasma marginale infection in cattle introduced to a Boophilus microplus-infested area in Veracruz, Mexico. Eight intact, 18-month-old, cross-bred beef cattle (four naive, Group A; four Babesia species--premunized, Group B) were immediately exposed to ticks after arrival and were clinically monitored from day 6 to day 98 post-exposure (PE) to ticks. Blood sample analysis for DNA detection by the MPCR/DNA probe assay showed that Group A animals were infected with B. bovis from day 11 up to day 22 PE, requiring

Contamination of a batch of tick fever (babesiosis and anaplasmosis) vaccine with bovine leucosis virus (BLV) was detected when a herd, in the final stages of an enzootic bovine leucosis (EBL) accreditation program, developed a large number of seropositive cattle following use of tick fever vaccine. Investigations incriminated a single calf used to produce Anaplasma centrale vaccine from which 13,959 doses were distributed. The failure of this calf to give a positive agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test before use was not fully explained. A total of 22,627 cattle from 111 herds receiving conta
