Sex-specific anatomical variation of circle of Willis arteries.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations in the circle of Willis (CoW) arteries are common and can affect hemodynamic stress, thereby influencing the risk of cerebrovascular pathology. Previous studies have suggested sex differences in CoW anatomy, but findings vary due to limited study population size and different measurement methods. This study aims to investigate sex differences in artery diameters, anatomical variants and bifurcation angles of the CoW using a large population cohort and semi-automatic measurements. METHODS: Sex-specific CoW anatomical variations were assessed using Magnetic Res

Duplicated Inferior Vena Cava: A Rare Anatomical Variation.

The inferior vena cava is a crucial venous structure that originates during the first trimester of gestation. Anomalies in its development can lead to rare conditions, including duplication of the inferior vena cava (DIVC). This case report describes a 26-year-old male with no significant medical history who presented with acute dysphagia after consuming a large piece of chicken. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed food impaction, which was successfully managed. However, an incidental finding during a computed tomography scan revealed a DIVC, a rare anatomical variation. This case highlight

Anatomical variations of the superficial palmar arch in human fetuses.

The superficial palmar arch is an important anatomical structure that contributes to the arterial supply of the palmar side of the hand in the upper extremity. However, there is limited information on the embryological morphological structure of the superficial palmar arch in the literature. We studied the types of the superficial palmar arch and determined their variations by dissecting 80 upper extremities of 40 formalin-fixed human fetuses (19 males, 21 females) 18-37 weeks of age. The types and variations of the superficial palmar arch were examined, and the median artery was imaged. The s

Anatomical variations of the thyroid gland: An experimental cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: The thyroid gland displays numerous variations in its anatomy. Understanding the variations that occur can benefit diagnosis of thyroid disorders and improve management. The aim of this study was to investigate how factors such as age and sex may influence variations in the thyroid. METHODS: Twenty cadavers (10 males & 10 females) with a mean age of 78 were dissected. Variations in anatomy and vasculature were examined. Correlation between age and thyroid size was tested for significance using GraphPad prism 7. RESULTS: Most cadavers, 65%, had the superior thyroid artery origin

Anatomical Variation in Mesenteric Macrophage Phenotypes in Crohn's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical trials are currently investigating whether an extended mesenteric resection for ileocecal resections could reduce postoperative recurrence in Crohn's disease. Resection of the mesorectum, which contains proinflammatory macrophages, during proct(ocol)ectomy, is associated with reduced recurrent inflammation and improved wound healing. We aimed to characterize the macrophages in the ileocecal mesentery, which were compared with those in the mesorectum, to provide a biological rationale for the ongoing trials. METHODS: In 13 patients with Crohn's disease and 4 control pati

Persistent left superior vena cava: An anatomical variation.

The persistent left superior vena cava (LSVC) is a common anomaly of congenital heart disease. The presence of LSVC is commonly associated with other congenital cardiac anomalies such as atrial septal defect, tetralogy of fallot, aortic coarctation, ventricular septal defect and very rarely it occurs as an isolated finding. During a routine dissection for undergraduate students, a persistent LSVC along with variation in anterior cardiac vein and right septal pouch (RSP) was observed in heart of an approximately 48-year-old male cadaver. The persistent LSVC was draining into the right atrium vi

Bilateral anatomical variations in the extensor compartment of forearm and hand.

An unusual variation of the extensor muscles was found during the routine dissection of the posterior compartment of the forearm. The left forearm presented an extensor medii proprius muscle, the tendon of which had an unusual trajectory. It passed through the second extensor compartment between the tendons of the extensor carpi radialis longus and extensor carpi radialis brevis muscles. The right forearm presented two muscles for the index finger: one, the extensor indicis et medius communis, the tendon of which was split into three tendons, one radial and one ulnar for the index finger and a

Anatomical variations in the first extensor compartment: a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations in the first extensor compartment are associated with the pathogenesis of de Quervain's disease. Here, we report two novel anatomical variations of the first extensor compartment. METHODS: The wrists of two adult cadavers were dissected to reveal the anatomical variations in the first extensor compartment. RESULTS: In one of the cadavers, no septum was present in the first extensor compartment. However, the extensor pollicis brevis tendon and its proximal muscle belly were absent. The abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendon had multiple slips, and one of them

Anatomic Variations of the Floor of the Third Ventricle: An Endoscopic Study.

OBJECTIVE: Anatomical variations of the floor of the third ventricle are common in hydrocephalic patients and can significantly affect outcomes of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). We sought to categorize variations in third ventricle anatomy and to discuss the implications of these variations for ETV. METHODS: Intraoperative videos and pictures of 50 patients who underwent ETV between April 2001 and August 2010 were reviewed. Twenty-seven patients with clearly demonstrable third ventricular floors that satisfied our criteria were selected for the study. RESULTS: Images of variations w

Presentation of Anatomical Variations Using the Aurasma Mobile App.

Knowledge of anatomical variations is critical to avoid clinical complications and it enables an understanding of morphogenetic mechanisms. Depictions are comprised of photographs or illustrations often limiting appreciation of three-dimensional (3D) spatial relationships. The purpose of this study is to describe an approach for presenting anatomical variations utilizing video clips emphasizing 3D anatomical relationships delivered on personal electronic devices. An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) was an incidental finding in a routine dissection of an 89-year-old man cadaver during a

Review of thoracic duct anatomical variations and clinical implications.

The thoracic duct (TD) transports ingested fat, drains lymph from the gastrointestinal vascular bed, and delivers the lymph to central veins in the neck. Preliminary evidence suggests that diversion of TD lymph may mitigate the severity of end-organ dysfunction in critical illness. Variations in the anatomy of the TD may determine whether reliable and safe cannulation of the duct, a necessary step for diversion, is possible. A systematic review was undertaken using the Google Scholar, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Scopus databases until 31st March, 2013. Both English and non-English articles were searc
