Unusual Pattern of Coeliac Trunk and Its Branches: A Cadaveric Study of Two Cases with its Embryological and Clinical Correlation.

The coeliac trunk, the first anterior branch, often originates at the level of the T12 vertebral body, right below the aortic hiatus, as the first ventral branch of the abdominal aorta. It commonly divides into the left gastric, common hepatic, and splenic arteries. We report a rare variation in the branching pattern and course of branches of the coeliac trunk in two donated female cadavers during routine abdominal dissection. It is essential to understand the coeliac trunk and the distinctions in its origin and branching pattern to perform efficient upper abdominal surgical and radiological p

Variation in the formation of the retromandibular and the external jugular veins with embryological overview: A case report.

Awareness of the formation and termination of the head & neck's superficial vein, such as jugular veins, are imperative for anatomists, surgeons, and radiologists during interventional procedures. We report an uncommon variation in the formation of the retromandibular vein and external jugular vein (EJV) in an embalmed male cadaver's right side. The joining of the facial vein and superficial temporal vein within the parotid gland formed the retromandibular vein (RMV). The anterior division joined with the submental vein forming an anomalous venous trunk. The anomalous vein united with the EJV

A rare anastomosis between the common hepatic artery and the superior mesenteric artery: a case report.

For decades, anastomoses between unpaired branches of the abdominal aorta have attracted the attention of anatomists, surgeons and radiologists, due to their significance in many clinical procedures. This report presents a rare anastomosis between the common hepatic artery and the superior mesenteric artery, which gave off three branches to the jejunum. The diameter of the anastomosis measured at the point of its branching off the common hepatic artery and at the level of union with the superior mesenteric artery was 4.46 and 4.19 mm, respectively. Moreover, the anastomosis gave off the branch

The naming of the cranial nerves: a historical review.

The giants of medicine and anatomy have each left their mark on the history of the cranial nerves, and much of the history of anatomic study can be viewed through the lens of how the cranial nerves were identified and named. A comprehensive literature review on the classification of the cranial names was performed. The identification of the cranial nerves began with Galen in the 2nd century AD and evolved up through the mid-20th century. In 1778, Samuel Sömmerring, a German anatomist, classified the 12 cranial nerves as we recognize them today. This review expands on the excellent investigatio

Six-headed coracobrachialis muscle.

The coracobrachialis muscle is the smallest muscle of the anterior compartment of the arm. It is responsible for flexion and abduction in the glenohumeral joint. The coracobrachialis muscle is morphologically variable both in its insertion and origin. Moreover, some additional heads or structures may also occur. The present report describes a six-headed coracobrachialis muscle originated as a common junctionwith the short head of the biceps brachii muscle from the coracoid process. All of these heads insert into the medial surface of the humeral shaft. It is important to note that the musculoc

Facial asymmetry with severe unilateral hypoplasia of the muscles of mastication: a report of clinical and electromyographic findings.

Mild degrees of asymmetry of the human body have been recognised both by classical sculptors and more recently by anatomists as both normal and widely occurring. Morphologic asymmetries of the face of a more severe nature are, however, quite rare. When such deformities occur, both the hard and soft tissues may be involved and the abnormality may be acquired as a result of trauma, infection, neoplasia or surgery or be of a developmental origin as in the syndromes affecting the first pharyngeal arch. Developmental asymmetries of the jaws may also arise as a result of unilateral disruption of man

Pineal gland, perennial puzzle.

Since antiquity this tiny intracranial appendicular organ has aroused sexual connotations and denials. Controversial and enigmatic, it played a significant part in the development of endocrinology and even neurosurgery. What was its histology, what was its role as a gland so intimately attached to the brain? What did comparative anatomists make of it in the light of its function as a 'third eye?' Mysticism and the famous Cartesian apothegm placed it in the center of Eastern and Western approaches to the mind-body problem and to mental disorders. The latter were connected with the common calcif

[Hyperplasia and adenoma of the ectopic parathyroid gland].

The frequency of the ectopic parathyroid glands has been reported to be 7-46% by anatomists or surgeons, while the proper frequency is still unknown. Recently the diagnostic methods of hyperparathyroidism have been developed, and many surgeons select total parathyroidectomy for renal hyperparathyroidism. Therefore the frequency of the ectopic glands has been supposed to be higher than that recognized previously. We investigated 97 patients with renal hyperparathyroidism, and detected 60 ectopic glands in 34 patients (35.1%). The ectopic glands existed in the mediastinum, intrathyroid, carotid

Identification of accessory bile ducts at cholecystectomy.

The presence of accessory channels between the liver and extrahepatic bile ducts has long been recognised by anatomists and the division of such ducts may be a cause of bile leakage following cholecystectomy. However, visualisation of accessory bile ducts at operation is difficult as they are often small and sometimes less than 1 mm in diameter. Cholangiography has been used to help in the identification of accessory ducts in 50 patients included in a prospective trial. X-rays were taken after dissection of the gall bladder from its bed and extravasation of contrast was seen on five occasions

[No corpora sesamoidea laryngis in man and animal].

The fact that the Corpora sesamoidea have never been precisely defined has led to a series of small cartilaginous bodies in the larynx being thus designated, for want of a better solution. Since the corpora sesamoidea have been identified as capsular bodies, however, originating in or in connection with a synovial capsule, there remained only one laryngeal cartilage which appeared to fulfill all the criteria of sesamoid cartilage, namely the papilionaceous cartilage found in all alar species from Monotremata to Carnivora, and which comparative anatomists term proarytaenoid cartilage. If Goeppe

Vesico-obturator venous plexus - a rare termination of obturator vein.

Obturator vein usually terminates into the internal iliac vein. Its variations are the cause major bleeding problems in pelvic surgeries. We observed a rare variation in the termination of the right obturator vein. There was a duplication of right obturator vein. Both obturator veins entered the pelvic cavity through the obturator foramen and joined with two vesical veins to form a vesico-obturator plexus. This plexus surrounded the internal iliac artery and terminated into the internal iliac vein. Awareness of this rare variation could be of importance to anatomists, radiologists, gynaecologi

The clinical anatomy of the accessory submandibular gland: a comprehensive review.

An accessory submandibular gland is a rare variation. As such, there is limited literature regarding the embryology, anatomy, variations, clinical imaging, and pathology of the accessory submandibular gland. In this article, we review the existing literature on the accessory submandibular gland from clinical and anatomical perspectives. The goal of this review is to provide comprehensive knowledge of this variation which can be useful for oral and maxillofacial/head and neck surgeons, radiologists, and anatomists. Within this review, the embryologic origin as well as the anatomy of the accesso

Diurnal Fasting During Ramadan Leading to Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome.

Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is a favorite of anatomists and clinicians because it results from extrinsic compression of the duodenum by the 2 vascular structures forming the aortomesenteric angle (the descending abdominal aorta and the SMA). Although it is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal obstruction, SMA syndrome can cause significant morbidity. It is more common in younger people. Historically, it has been associated with weight loss and eating disorders, but there are several other risk factors that should be considered in the workup. Cases of SMA syndrome are typic

Male and female anatomical homologies in the perineum of the dog (Canis familiaris).

Understanding the homologies between male and female perineal structure helps both evolutionary biologists and clinicians better understand the evolution and anatomy of canines. Domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) play an important role in human society, and canine perineal anatomy is important for maintaining dogs' reproductive health for successful breeding and a wide variety of pathologies. Here, we investigate homologies between male and female perineal structure, identifying structures based on common function, anatomical relationships and attachments. In this investigation we dissected 21 m

Aberrant pancreatic ductal organisation: a case report.

Anomalous pancreatic ductal system has always enthralled the anatomists, surgeons, gastroenterologists and radiologists alike. With the growing use of MRCP, ERCP and endoscopic and surgical procedures, the knowledge of anatomical aberrations of pancreaticobiliary tract becomes extremely important. Moreover, the anomalous pancreatic duct morphology may be responsible for atypical gastrointestinal complains. We report an exceptionally rare case of two accessory ventral pancreatic ducts opening separately into the common bile duct proximal to the hepato pancreatic ampulla. Concomitant occurrence

An anomalous left external jugular vein draining into right subclavian vein.

Knowledge of the varying drainage patterns of superficial veins of head & neck, in particular, jugular veins are not only important for anatomists but also for the surgeons operating at this level and to clinicians in general. The variations are important also for interventional radiologists, who perform trans-jugular procedures, such as port implantations and trans-jugular intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunts or selective venous samplings. Results of recent studies report that the superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein, have been increasingly utilized for cannulation to conduc

Unusual lateral presentation of popliteal cyst: a case report.

The commonest cyst to occur in the popliteal region is the popliteal cyst and over the past years it has received much clinical attention. The commonest position of the popliteal cyst is in the posterosuperior aspect of the medial femoral condyle. The present case report describes a rare case of popliteal cyst, which was found on the postero-superior aspect of the lateral condyle of the femur. Interestingly, there are fewer reports of popliteal cysts occurring in the postero-superior aspect of the lateral condyle. We as anatomists describe the topographical anatomy of an unusual presentation o

Infective agents in fixed human cadavers: a brief review and suggested guidelines.

Cadavers remain a principal teaching tool for anatomists and medical educators teaching gross anatomy. Infectious pathogens in cadavers that present particular risks include Mycobacterium tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, the AIDS virus HIV, and prions that cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS). It is often claimed that fixatives are effective in inactivation of these agents. Unfortunately cadavers, even though they are fixed, may still pose infection hazards to those who handle them. Specific sa

George Macaulay: A short biography and his place in the history of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

George Macaulay (1716-1766) was a Scot admired for his work as an obstetric physician, philanthropist, author, and feminist, but whom history has largely forgotten. In a time rampant with misogyny, Macaulay empathized with women, discouraged sexism within institutions, and contributed to the training of midwives. He spent much of his career working at the British Lying-in Hospital in London. Perhaps most importantly, he worked tirelessly for this hospital, contributed to various medical innovations, and reported several medical cases throughout his career, including that of congenital diaphrag

Variations in the origin and course of the suprascapular artery: case report and literature review.

The suprascapular artery is normally a branch of the thyrocervical trunk of the subclavian artery. During dissection of the left upper limb of a female cadaver, aged 70 years and fixed in 10% formalin solution, the suprascapular artery was observed aberrantly arising from the first part of the axillary artery. Later, it coursed obliquely behind the clavicle bone and brachial plexus to reach the suprascapular notch, where it was accompanied by the suprascapular nerve. Then, both suprascapular nerve and artery anomalously traversed beneath the transverse scapular ligament. It then irrigated the
