[Optimum dose of intravenous butorphanol as a supplemental drug during regional anesthesia].

The optimum doses according to age of butorphanol tartrate as a supplemental drug during epidural and spinal anesthesia were investigated in 60 patients without complications. We classified patients into 4 groups by age as A, B, C and D-group. A-group consisting of patients between 20 to 40 years received 1.5mg of butorphanol. B-group 41-60, C-group 61-75 and D-group over 76 years received 1.0mg, 0.5mg and 0.25mg respectively. After operation was started without pain, and during the stable period, we determined by age, doses of butorphanol injected intravenously in one minute. HRs, mean BPs, r

Effects of total intravenous anesthesia with etomidate and propofol on postoperative cognitive dysfunction.

Increased incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is observed in elderly patients underwent intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) with endotracheal intubation. Modulation of anesthetics compatibility may reduce the severity of POCD. Elderly patients scheduled for TIVA with endotracheal intubation were randomly divided into the control group (1.00?2.00 mg/kg propofol) and the etomidate and propofol combination group (1.00?2.00 mg/kg propofol and 0.30 mg/kg etomidate). Serum cortisol, S100?, and neuron-specific enolase (NSE), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-10 were monitored during or after t

Effect of intravenous oxycodone on the physiologic responses to extubation following general anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal intubation and extubation may cause undesirable hemodynamic changes. Intravenous oxycodone has recently been introduced and used for relieving hemodynamic alterations in response to intubation, but there is insufficient information regarding its application in stabilizing hemodynamics during extubation in the patients emerging from general anesthesia. METHODS: One hundred patients, who had undergone assorted laparoscopic surgeries under general anesthesia, were randomly assigned to Control group (saline injection, 50 cases) and Study group (intravenous injection of 0.

Comparison of intravenous and oral administration of acetaminophen in adults undergoing general anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen is a widely clinically used analgesic. However, the clinical effect of the route of administration on postoperative analgesia as well as on postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing general anesthesia remains unclear. This study aimed to explore whether the route of administration of acetaminophen affects postoperative analgesia, nausea, and vomiting in patients undergoing general anesthesia. METHODS: We included all randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of the route of administration of acetaminophen on postoperative pain, nausea, and

[Drugs for intravenous induction of anesthesia: ketamine, midazolam and synopsis of current hypnotics].

Ketamine and midazolam form the endpoint of a series of articles about intravenous induction of anesthesia . Both substances can be used as single induction hypnotic drugs; however, in practice, this is unusual. Both substances, with the exception of a few very specific indications and clinical situations, are more frequently used in combination or with one of the more common alternatives propofol, barbiturates and etomidate. The reasons are the activity and side effects of both substances and their positive characteristics are used more as a supplement. In the concluding comparison the five d

Influence of intravenous anesthesia on mucosal and systemic antibody responses to nasal vaccines.

Inhalation of antigens may stimulate the immune system by way of the upper as well as the lower airways. We have shown that at least 1,000 times more live pneumococci were recovered from pulmonary tissue after being presented as drops of a liquid suspension onto the nares of anesthetized mice compared to the number of bacteria recovered from animals that were not anesthetized in the course of the challenge. Mice that were similarly immunized intranasally by inhalation of three different nonreplicating particulate vaccine formulations, i.e., a meningococcal outer membrane vesicle (OMV) vaccine,

Postoperative acute kidney injury after volatile or intravenous anesthesia: a meta-analysis.

Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication after surgery. The pathophysiology of postoperative AKI is complex. One potentially important factor is anesthetic modality. We, therefore, conducted a meta-analysis of the available literature regarding anesthetic modality and incidence of postoperative AKI. Records were retrieved until January 17, 2023, with the search terms ("propofol" OR "intravenous") AND ("sevoflurane" OR "desflurane" OR "isoflurane" OR "volatile" OR "inhalational") AND ("acute kidney injury" OR "AKI"). Intravenous infusion of rocuronium bromide prolongs emergence from propofol anesthesia in rats.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular blocking agents induce muscle paralysis via the prevention of synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction and may have additional effects at other sites of action. With regard to potential effects of neuromuscular blocking agents on the central nervous system, a definitive view has not been established. We investigated whether intravenous infusion of rocuronium bromide affects the emergence from propofol anesthesia. METHODS: Using an in vivo rat model, we performed propofol infusion for 60 minutes, along with rocuronium bromide at various infusion rates or no

Patients' Perspective on Carpal Tunnel Release with WALANT or Intravenous Regional Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: The authors conducted a prospective study to compare patients' intraoperative experience of open carpal tunnel release under "wide awake, local anesthesia, no tourniquet" (WALANT) on the one hand and intravenous regional anesthesia on the other. The authors hypothesized that WALANT would offer a better intraoperative experience than intravenous regional anesthesia. METHODS: Twenty-four patients with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome had one hand operated on using WALANT and the contralateral hand with the intravenous regional anesthesia method. At the postoperative second hour, pat

Evaluation of intravenous prophylaxis antibiotics for third molar extraction under general anesthesia.

Prophylactic antibiotic administration aims to maintain the postoperative wound environment. It is difficult to select appropriate prophylactic antibiotics to minimize the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria and the occurrence of complications. The purpose of this study was to compare the prophylactic effect of narrow spectrum antibiotics (cefazolin) with that of wide spectrum antibiotics (piperacillin) in preventing infection following third molar extraction. In addition, the effect of postoperative cefazolin administration was examined. This retrospective study included 350 patients

Total Spinal Anesthesia Following an Interscalene Block Treated with Intravenous Lipid Emulsion.

Total spinal anesthesia following interscalene block is a rare and life-threatening complication of regional anesthesia. A 56-year-old woman underwent an uncomplicated left shoulder bone spur removal under general anesthesia with an interscalene nerve block at an outpatient surgical center. Subsequently, she developed bilateral mydriasis, paralysis of all extremities, and respiratory arrest. She was intubated and transferred to the emergency department (ED) where she was given intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) with complete recovery of neurological function. ILE therapy may be considered as a r

Intravenous anesthesia inhibits leukocyte-endothelial interactions and expression of CD11b after hemorrhage.

UNLABELLED: Hemorrhage increases adhesion of leukocytes to the venular endothelium, mediated by increased expression of the Mac-1 integrin complex (CD18/CD11b) present on leukocytes. Anesthetic agents may possess anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, this study determined the effects of i.v. anesthesia on leukocyte adhesion after hemorrhage in relation to expression of CD11b. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were (n = 57) anesthetized i.v. with propofol (Diprivan) and fentanyl, ketamine, or thiopental. During anesthesia, 10% of total blood volume was removed and intravital microscopy used to observe
