[Role of an anesthesiologist-resuscitation specialist in organ donation for transplantation].

There is an annual reduction in the number of donors worldwide. An anesthesiologist-resuscitation specialist is a key figure in the whole system of organ donation. The so-called transplantation, i.e., the organization of the whole process of interaction between a healthy care facility, a local organ donation center, and ancillary laboratory and diagnostic services is one of his/her primary roles in organ donation. The organizational, legal, and ethic issues of organ donation for transplantation are discussed from the viewpoint of an anesthesiologist-resuscitation specialist. There is a paralle

[An anesthesiologist-resuscitator's differential tactics in acute traumatic disease].

The detection of four forms of the course of acute traumatic disease (traumatic shock, acute respiratory failure, acute heart failure, and traumatic coma) leads to the conclusion that the multi pathogenic mechanism responsible for progression of the disease generates a need for differentiating the tactics of an anesthesiologist-resuscitator, beginning from the first hours after injury. Therapeutic tactics may be standardized within each specific form of an acute period of traumatic disease. Implementation of specific tactic programs for anesthesiological and resuscitative care in acute traumat

Managing ergot-induced gangrene: the anesthesiologist as a key player.

We discuss the successful management of gangrene of the upper and lower limbs after ergot-induced abortion by unlicensed medical charlatans in a developing country. Our purpose is to highlight the dangerous means adopted by unlicensed medical charlatans to induce abortion as well as to emphasize the key role played by anesthesiologists in the management of such cases.

[Bilateral choanal atresia in the newborn infant. Role of the anesthesiologist].

Congenital bilateral atresia of the choana is a rare anomaly. It is a closure of the posterior nares by a membranous and/or osseous partition. It causes early respiratory distress in the neonate. The history and presenting symptoms seldom cannot simulate those of severe respiratory distress in the newborn. The anaesthesist can easily make the diagnosis when he observes a "cyclic pattern of respiratory distress": chest retraction and cyanosis which disappear with crying. The purpose of this present case is to emphasize both anaesthetic and surgical approaches to the management of this type of l

Ultrasound vessel sizing before cannulation: a measurement-first approach for anesthesiologists.

The catheter gauge and length are often chosen based on visual estimation. Ultrasound allows for the direct measurement of vessel diameter and depth, which may reduce failed attempts, particularly in patients with difficult access and pediatric patients. This narrative review evaluated trials, meta-analyses, and guidelines on ultrasound-guided vascular access in adults and children to derive practical sizing rules for venous and arterial cannulation in anesthesiology. Key recommendations include targeting a catheter-to-vein ratio (CVR) ≤ 0.45 for peripheral IVs and using long catheters for dee

Perioperative implications of amyloidosis and amyloid cardiomyopathy: A review for anesthesiologists.

It is well recognized that amyloid protein can infiltrate many regions of the body. This can include the peripheral nerves, the liver, kidney, spleen, the gastrointestinal tract, and most importantly the myocardium. The amyloid proteins that cause cardiomyopathy may come from genetically altered liver genes (transthyretin amyloid, ATTR) or from the bone marrow with malignant plasma cells (light chain amyloid, AL) generating the aberrant protein. These two types of amyloidosis cause significant damaging effects on both the myocardial cells as well as the conduction system of the heart. The resu

New perforated radiation shield for anesthesiologists: Monte Carlo simulation of effects.

Catheterization for structural heart disease (SHD) requires fluoroscopic guidance, which exposes health care professionals to radiation exposure risk. Nevertheless, existing freestanding radiation shields for anesthesiologists are typically simple, uncomfortable rectangles. Therefore, we devised a new perforated radiation shield that allows anesthesiologists and echocardiographers to access a patient through its apertures during SHD catheterization. No report of the relevant literature has described the degree to which the anesthesiologist's radiation dose can be reduced by installing radiatio

Perioperative communication practices of anesthesiologists: A need to introspect and change.

BACKGROUND: We conducted an audit of various communication practices during perioperative care among anesthesiology resident (R), faculties (F), and private practitioners (PP) in South India. We also documented the level of psycho-social support given to the patient and patient relatives and communication with the surgical colleagues during perioperative care. METHODOLOGY: A 15-point questionnaire based on communication practices was distributed in three major anesthesiology conferences requesting anesthesiologists to answer and drop the forms in the drop box provided. Ambulatory surgery adult patient selection criteria - a survey of Canadian anesthesiologists.

PURPOSE: An increasing number of patients with complex medical problems are now considered suitable for ambulatory surgery. The purpose of this study was to identify the current clinical practice of ambulatory surgical patient selection. METHODS: A standardized questionnaire specifying 30 clinical conditions was sent to all practicing anesthesiologists who are members of the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society. Recipients were asked to indicate if they would provide ambulatory anesthesia (yes/no answers) for an adult patient with each of those isolated conditions. A 75% agreement was consider

[Sources of stress and burn-out in anesthesiologists. Reality and perspectives].

A sample of 128 anaesthesists was given the Maslach Burn-out Inventory (MBI). The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the stress level and/or burn-out in a setting which has not yet been explored. Findings indicate significant differences between groups concerning only the intensity responses. The burn-out scale used appears suitable to evaluate some modalities of response to stress, even in health workers, and stimulating to further research in order to obtain some suggestions about prevention and treatment in hospital organization.

[Progress and problems in pediatric surgery--the Association of Pediatric Anesthesiologists].

From the first meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons in 1964 a small group discussion on anesthetic problems and patient care was held by some anesthesiologists at night. The Association of Pediatric Anesthesiologists (started in 1971) has undertaken the night meeting ever since the twelfth Annual Meeting of the Society of Pediatric Surgeons in 1975. The problems about pediatric respiratory management, neonatal emergency surgery and pediatric anesthesia were discussed frequently by doctors in different specialties. The recent decrease of mortality in neonatal surgery is thought

Perioperative POCUS: Technical Considerations and Applications for the Pediatric Anesthesiologist.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) use continues to expand across specialties caring for pediatric patients in the perioperative period, offering noninvasive, diagnostic information that complements clinical assessment in real time. Although many POCUS applications were developed and validated in adults, pediatric POCUS requires unique considerations. This review examines the current evidence of diagnostic POCUS within pediatric perioperative care. Methods: A structured search of PubMed was performed for literature published through December 2025, using terms related to point-of-care

An Anesthesiologist's Moral Distress With Organ Procurement: A Narrative Review.

Organ procurement procedures have evolved significantly over the past decade, resulting in new moral uncertainties. The dead donor rule (DDR), a foundational principle, mandates that organ procurement occurs only after death is confirmed. However, developments such as donation after circulatory death (DCD) and normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) have raised ethical issues, creating moral distress and moral injury among anesthesiologists. This review highlights the recent changes in the organ procurement processes and the potential impact on anesthesiologists and also discusses the strategies

What an anesthesiologist should know about pediatric arrhythmias.

Identifying and treating pediatric arrhythmias is essential for pediatric anesthesiologists. Pediatric patients can present with narrow or wide complex tachycardias, though the former is more common. Patients with inherited channelopathies or cardiomyopathies are at increased risk. Since most pediatric patients present for anesthesia without a baseline electrocardiogram, the first identification of an arrhythmia may occur under general anesthesia. Supraventricular tachycardia, the most common pediatric tachyarrhythmia, represents a broad category of predominately narrow complex tachycardias. S

Common street drug names for the anesthesiologist and pain physician.

People who use or sell drugs develop their own in-group terms and language, much like any other group of people with a common experience. Slang terms are derived from a wide variety of sources. These might include the physical appearance and/or type of drug, the place where it originates, the effect it has on users, or how it is packaged for sale. To assist and educate the clinical practitioner who may deal with this nomenclature, we have compiled a list of some of the most common street names and some explanations (when known) of their origins.
