Arteriovenous dysplasia is rather uncommon disease, quite often leading to severe complications even in young age. Involvement of the osseous apparatus into the pathological process is frequently associated with the problem of amputation of the affected limb. Therefore, salvage of the extremity while removing arteriovenous shunt and trophic impairments is an extremely important clinical task. In the presented herein clinical case report, a female patient with arteriovenous angiodysplasia of the lower limb with the tibial bone involved into the pathological process underwent repeated stagewise

Angiodysplasia (vascular malformations) of the colon is extremely rare in children, and, as in adults, present with lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Here we report an unusual pediatric case of angiodysplasia of the terminal ileum and cecum presenting as an acute abdomen with radiological features suggestive of lymphoma.

Gastrointestinal angiodysplasia (GIAD) of the jejunum is a rare cause of acute upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding in the paediatric population. This is the case of a previously well 10-year-old girl who presented with acute rectal haemorrhage, haematemesis and syncope. Despite an exploratory laparotomy, the cause of bleeding remained unknown. A computerized tomography angiogram was performed once she was haemodynamically stable. It indicated bleeding in the jejunum. Repeat laparotomy was performed including enterotomy, copious small bowel washout and visualization of the whole small bow

BACKGROUND: Angiodysplasia (AD) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a rare cause of surgical GI bleeding. It frequently poses difficult problems in diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study is to find answers to these problems for a better management of the AD patients.
MATERIALS: From 1982 to 2006 a total of 75 patients suffering of AD of the GI tract were operated in our center. They represent about 3.6% of total patients operated for GI bleeding in the same period. The age of the patients was between 9 and 81 years old, with two peaks: one between 21 and 40 years old and the oth

A previously unreported case of a complex congenital cardiac anomaly consisting of coronary and valvular angiodysplasia, complicated by an eosinophilic endomyocardial disease, is described. The disorder presented clinically with congestive heart failure, which was characterized by evidence of floating masses causing severe pulmonary stenosis and dysfunction of the mitral and aortic valves. Symptoms of cardiac failure disappeared following pulmonary valve replacement and steroid therapy.

The aim of the present study was to draw an outline of the clinical epidemiology of bleeding gastrointestinal angiodysplasias. The study includes a report of a case and of our series of patients with bleeding gastrointestinal angiodysplasias admitted, between 1993 and 2003, to a ward of Internal Medicine where digestive endoscopy is also performed. A review of the literature is also provided. An 80-year-old cirrhotic woman with aortic stenosis, was referred to our Department because of anemia due to melena. In spite of 13 hospitalizations during which numerous diagnostic procedures including e

An experience with examination and surgical treatment of 156 patients with angiodysplasia of lower extremities shows that the ultrasonic location and dopplerography are highly informative methods of diagnosis of this disease. The orthostatic probe (the Valsalva test effect) allows the spread of angiodysplasia (suprafascial or subfascial) to be determined. The adequate strategy and volume of surgery can be chosen correctly. These methods of examination being noninvasive and easy makes them helpful for the objective assessment of the effectiveness of the surgical procedures and control of furthe

Gastrointestinal angiodysplasia is a cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in the elderly, for which surgery has been the only treatment. Estrogen has been reported beneficial in some cases in the past decade. Recurrent bleeding due to angiodysplasia occurred from the small intestine in a 75-year-old woman, and from the right colon in a 91-year-old man. The diagnoses were made by angiography in the first case and colonoscopy and erythrocyte- scanning in the second. There was aortic stenosis in both, a combination which has been reported in other cases. Both patients improved with estrogen therapy

We report the case of a female patient who came to our observation for a severe enterorrhage. Following colonoscopic examination and color-Doppler M-B Mode echocardiography we made the following diagnosis: "angiodysplasia of the right colon in females with aortic stenosis". It was possible to ascertain whether there were similar lesions in other parts of the gastro-intestinal tract because the patient opposed firmly. In agreement with other authors, we believe that colonoscopic examination is the appropriate method to diagnose gastro-intestinal angiodysplasia. The advanced age and the clinical

BACKGROUND: Parietal vascular malformations of the intestinal tract are rare and their diagnosis is often difficult.
CASE REPORT: A 2 year-old boy had suffered from intermittent rectal bleeding since the age of one year. Endoscopic examination showed unspecific congestive changes and biopsy showed features of chronic inflammatory changes in the rectum. Barium enema was normal. The patient was operated on, but surgery failed to find any cause for these hemorrhages. Rectal bleedings recurred, some of them resulting in severe anemia. Two further endoscopic examination were grossly negative as wa

Three patients with a history of bleeding due to small bowel angiodysplasia (repeated melena or occult fecal blood with serious anemia) were treated for 10-40 months with octreotide, a somatostatin analog that reduces the splanchnic flow. A dose of 0.1 mg subcutaneously twice a day was followed by an increase in hemoglobin, and reduction or elimination of the need for transfusions. There were no further melena episodes, and stool hemoglobin became stably negative in two cases. Suspension of the drug after 6 months in one case was followed by renewed bleeding, and resumption led to a further re

Based on a retrospective evaluation of 107 patients with congenital venous angiodysplasia of the Type Klippel-Trenaunay (n = 76) and Type Servelle-Martorell (n = 31) the frequency and pathogenesis of aneurysm formation in the venous system has been analysed. The vascular patterns include both cylindric ectasias and fusiform aneurysms with an incidence of approximately 40%. Preferred locations are subcutaneous drainage veins, the popliteal, external iliac vein and atypic communicating veins between the superficial and the deep venous system. Complications of the aneurysm such as local thrombosi

BACKGROUND: Recurrent bleeding from the small intestine accounts for 5 to 10% of cases of gastrointestinal bleeding and remains a therapeutic challenge. Thalidomide has been evaluated for the treatment of recurrent bleeding due to small-intestinal angiodysplasia (SIA), but confirmatory trials are lacking.
METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of thalidomide for the treatment of recurrent bleeding due to SIA. Eligible patients with recurrent bleeding (at least four episodes of bleeding during the previous

Background This study was performed to examine the prevalence of asymptomatic angiodysplasia detected in upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations and of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) suspected cases. Methodology The study participants were 5,034 individuals (3,206 males, 1,828 females; mean age 53.5 ± 9.8 years) who underwent an upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examination as part of a medical check-up. The presence of angiodysplasia was examined endoscopically from the pharynx to duodenal second portion. HHT suspected cases were diagnosed based on the presence of both upp

There is a recognized association between von Willebrand's disease and gastrointestinal angiodysplasia. Most previous publications have been reports of the association itself and there is little published on the management and long-term follow-up of affected patients. We report our experience and follow-up of six patients, and review the previous literature.

The authors report a case of oro-facial port-wine stain angiomatosis with cutaneous and mucosal lesions localized in the first and the second branch surface distribution areas of the right trigeminal nerve in association with right upper and lower lip, cheek, and hemimaxillary true hypertrophy leading to a severe dento-skeletal malocclusion with openbite and facial asymmetry. The authors through a revision of the Bibliography locate nosologically this case among the rare congenital angiodysplastic syndromes affecting the maxillo-facial district as the Sturge-Weber and the Klippel-Trenaunay syn

A previously healthy elderly man with gastrointestinal bleeding was found to have criteria for von Willebrand's disease. The late clinical onset of the disorder and negative family studies suggest that the von Willebrand's disease may be acquired. The findings in the patient were similar to the abnormalities reported in the small number of other patients thought to have acquired von Willebrands disease. An inhibitor of factor VIII could not be demonstrated in this patient. This patient also had platelet aggregation abnormalities that are atypical for patients with congenital or acquired von Wi
