The changing surgical management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

The management of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) has changed during the last decades but it still continues to be a challenge for the multidisciplinary head and neck surgical team. The aim of this study was to review the used treatment approach and outcome of JNA in a single institution series of 27 patients diagnosed and treated during the years 1970-2009. All patients were male, with the median age of 17 years (range 11-33 years). Surgery was used as the primary treatment in every case. Surgical approaches varied, transpalatal approach (N = 14) being the most common approach used

An unusual case of epistaxis-juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Epistaxis is a common complaint seen in the younger population. Its etiology is typically from the anterior nares, although we present a case of epistaxis from an uncommon source-juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a highly vascular, benign, yet locally invasive tumor that occurs in preadolescent males. OBJECTIVES: To illustrate a case of epistaxis from an uncommon source. CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old man with a past medical history of allergic rhinitis presented to the Emergency Department (ED) after 6 months of intermittent yet wors

Angiofibroma of the mandible: Rare sight for juvenile tumor.

Angiofibroma also called juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma are tumors of adolescence and the commonest site is the nasopharynx. Extra nasopharyngeal sites include upper respiratory and digestive tracts, oral cavity, tonsils, larynx, trachea, and esophagus. Intraosseous angiofibroma is the rarest of a rare entity.

Extranasopharyngeal Angiofibroma of the Natural Ostium of Maxillary Sinus.

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma which occurs in all head and neck regions is extremely rare. Unlike most angiofibromas which show nasal congestion and recurrent epistaxis as their symptoms, extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENAF) may lead to various symptoms depending on their location. Nasal septum is the most frequent site of origin of ENAF. No study of ENAF originating in natural ostium of maxillary sinus has been reported. We present a case of 27-year-old male who has extranasophar- yngeal angiofibroma arising from the natural ostium of maxillary sinus in an adult patient whose symptom w

Extensive nasopharyngeal angiofibromas: the maxillary swing approach.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and outcome using the maxillary swing approach for the management of extensive nasopharyngeal angiofibromas. A retrospective analysis in a tertiary care center revealed five cases with extensive nasal angiofibromas operated using the maxillary swing approach between 2010 and 2012. All patients had tumor extension to the lateral-most portions of the infratemporal fossa with complete occupation and destruction of the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus causing abutment to the cavernous sinus and complete involvement of the pterygopalatine f

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma of the nasal septum: a case report.

Angiofibroma arising outside the nasopharynx is unusual. The nasal septum is an extremely rare site for the origin of angiofibroma, and to date only 6 such cases previously have been reported in the literature. We report here a case of a 22-year-old man with a vascular mass arising from his nasal septum. The histopathology report was consistent with angiofibroma. We also review other cases in the literature of angiofibroma arising from the nasal septum and discuss a theory of the likely origin of angiofibroma.

A rare case of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in an elderly female.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas occur predominantly in males in their puberty and adolescence; the incidence in other age groups and in women is exceptional. This report describes a case of a 57-year-old woman with nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting typical radiological findings in computed tomography, MR imaging and angiography. The tumour was successfully removed and histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. In 6 years follow-up the patient is free of symptoms.

A rare complication of embolization in juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is one of the most common benign nasal cavity tumors of adolescence. It exhibits a strong tendency to bleed and despite being microscopically benign, its behavior is locally aggressive. Preoperative embolization is helpful to minimize intraoperative bleeding. However, embolization procedure may have some important thromboembolic complications such as central retinal artery occlusion. In this article, a young male with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, who lost his vision in the left eye following embolization was presented and the possible therape

[Juvenile angiofibroma of the nasopharynx--clinical diagnosis and therapy].

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is an infrequent epipharyngeal tumour necessitating particular diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in comparison to other benign epipharyngeal tumours due to its expansive growth tendency. Our retrospective study is aimed at presenting clinical casuistry of the tumour in order to evaluate modern diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities. The study included 13 male patients, aged 13-24 years, who were hospitalized, diagnostically assessed and surgically treated at the Institute of Otorhinolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery, Clinical Centre of Serbia over

Cellular angiofibroma of the vulva with DNA ploidy analysis.

Cellular angiofibroma (CAF) is a recently described rare soft tissue neoplasm of the vulva (with only four reported cases) that typically occurs as a well-circumscribed solid rubbery vulvar mass in middle-aged women. The distinct histologic features of bland spindle cells admixed with numerous hyalinized medium to small blood vessels, and a vimentin-positive desmin-negative immunoprofile differentiates this neoplasm from other vulvar tumors such as angiomyofibroblastoma and aggressive angiomyxoma. In this report an additional case of CAF is presented with DNA ploidy analysis and CD99 immunohis

Timed surgery for treatment of angiofibromas in tuberous sclerosis.

Angiofibromas are neoformations frequently occurring on the face of patients affected by tuberous sclerosis. Traditional methods of treating angiofibromas, such as curettage, dermabrasion, chemical peeling, cryosurgery, and laser are not entirely successful as they frequently lead to scarring and pigmentary change. We report the successful use of timed surgery, a novel electrosurgical procedure, in treating multiple angiofibromas. The technique is easy to use and very cost effective.

Genital angiofibromas in tuberous sclerosis: two cases.

Cutaneous lesions are an important feature of tuberous sclerosis (TS). Facial angiofibromas usually begin to appear at the end of the first decade of life and are considered to occur in about 88% of adults with TS. They are only rarely reported on sites other than the face or front. In this paper, we report two patients with the complete syndrome of TS that had, in addition to classic facial lesions, multiple papules on the genital area. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of angiofibroma. One patient's lesions were misdiagnosed as genital warts and were so being treated before the correct

Pre-operative embolization of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas.

Pre-operative embolization of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma was performed in 15 patients. The lesion was supplied by the internal carotid arteries (8 cases), by the internal maxillary artery (15 cases), the accessory meningeal artery (10 cases) and the ascending pharyngeal artery (10 cases). Superselective embolization of the external carotid artery feeders was performed with Ivalon particles, without neurological complications. Good control of per-operative blood loss was noted in 13 out of 15 cases, 2 patients presenting severe per-operative venous bleeding. Recurrence was noted in on

[Clinical case of diagnosis and treatment of extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma].

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas (ENGA) are benign fibrous vascular tumors that grow aggressively and are accompanied by destruction of the bones of the base of the skull and damage to nearby anatomical structures. The clinical manifestations of ENGA are rather nonspecific and largely depend on the localization (nasal septum, inferior nasal concha, upper jaw, etc.). The article presents a clinical case of endonasal endoscopic resection of ENGA with simultaneous X-ray-associated endovascular embolization of the tumor's supply vessels. The data of computed tomography with contrast, histological

Extranasopharyngeal angiofibroma of the sinonasal tract: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas of the sinonasal tract (ENA-SNT) are exceptionally rare tumors that remain poorly characterized in the literature. We aim to systematically review and synthesize the clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of ENA-SNT. METHODS: This review adhered to PRISMA guidelines. A literature search was conducted across major databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles that reported ENA-SNT cases in humans were eligible for inclusion. Data extraction and quality assessment were independently performed by two revie

The use of coblation technique for the debulking of juvenile angiofibroma.

In this paper, we describe how we successfully debulked a large juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) in a 15-year-old boy using the coblation technique. The child had been complaining about recurrent epistaxis and persistent nasal obstruction for several months. JNA is a rare benign tumor that predominantly affects adolescent and young adult males. JNAs exhibit gradual progression, local expansion, high vascularity, and a notable tendency for persistence and recurrence. Due to their high vascularity, JNAs require surgical removal, and treatment commonly includes preoperative embolization
