Objective: To investigate whether MRI findings can differentiate renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) from renal no-epithelioid (typical) angiomyolipoma. Methods: A total of 44 patients were collected from General Hospital of PLA.These cases were obtained from January 2009 to June 2015.To retrospectively analyze these mainly MRI findings among 12 cases of EAML (age from 27 to 61 years, male 2 cases, female 10 cases, mean age was 46.7 years); 32 cases of renal no-epithelioid AML (age from 34 to 70 years old, male 9 cases, female 23 cases, mean age was 53.4 years old) as case control study. Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is a rare variant of angiomyolipoma (AML). Previous studies have demonstrated that epithelial (E-)cadherin is expressed in two subtypes of AML, EAML and triphasic AML; however, the expression pattern of E-cadherin remains unclear. In the present study, a preliminary case-control study was conducted to determine the expression pattern of E-cadherin between EAML and triphasic AML, the control, focusing on the subcellular localization and expression category of E-cadherin. No significant difference was identified in the age, sex, history of tuberous sclerosis, sm

Angiomyolipomas are benign tumors of the kidney which express phenotypes of smooth muscle, fat, and melanocytes. These tumors appear with increased frequency in the autosomal dominant disorder tuberous sclerosis and are the leading cause of morbidity in adults with tuberous sclerosis. While benign, these tumors are capable of provoking life threatening hemorrhage and replacement of the kidney parenchyma, resulting in renal failure. The histogenesis of these tumors is currently unclear, although currently, we believe these tumors arise from "perivascular epithelioid cells" of which no normal co

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of everolimus, a mTOR inhibitor, on invasive malignant renal epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From Oct 2014 to May 2019, we collected data from seven patients with a definite (clinical and pathological) diagnosis of EAML received everolimus in our hospital. Targeted sequence capture array technique with next-generation of high throughput sequencing (NGS) were performed to detect mutations of TSC1/2 genes. All patients had received surgery and everolimus. The clinical efficacy and safety of the therapy were evaluated.

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare cystic pulmonary disease that may occur in association with mutations in the tuberous sclerosis genes or arise sporadically. The histologic hallmark of the disease is the "LAM" cell, a spindled to epithelioid smooth muscle-like cell that bears morphologic and immunohistochemical resemblance to the perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas). The origin of the "LAM" cell is unknown; emerging theories suggest that a member of the PEComa family, the renal angiomyolipoma, may be the primary source and that both LAM and angiomyolipomas are associated with

A renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign tumour of kidney origin. Pregnancy is known to be associated with an increased risk of tumour rupture causing hypovolaemic shock, which is usually managed surgically or through an embolisation procedure. However, having surgery during pregnancy predisposes the mother to a preterm delivery, and the unknown influences of radiation exposure to the fetus make the management of such cases very challenging. A 30-year-old pregnant woman had a sudden onset of gross haematuria at the 20th week of her pregnancy. The MRI showed a 10 cm mass suggestive of AML

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are mesenchymal neoplasms, named so because of the complex tissue composition represented by variable proportions of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle cells, and dysmorphic blood vessels. Although AMLs may rise in different sites of the body, they are mostly observed in the kidney and liver. In the case of renal AMLs, they are described in two types: isolated AMLs and AMLs associated with tuberous sclerosis (TS). While most cases of AMLs are found incidentally during imaging examinations and are asymptomatic, others may reach huge proportions causing symptoms. Pulmona

A 24-year-old lady presented with left flank pain of 3 months duration. She had stigmata of tuberous sclerosis complex in the form of angiofibromas on face, ash-leaf macules on back and right upper limb and shagreen patches over back. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed 6.5 cm × 5.0 cm × 4.4 cm lobulated intensely enhancing exophytic mass lesion in mid pole of left kidney with significant para-aortic lymphadenopathy with no evidence of fat in the mass. She underwent radical left nephrectomy with a provisional diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma. Histopathological examination showed mu

Angiomyolipomas are the most common mesenchymal renal neoplasms. Two types have been described: (i) sporadic angiomyolipoma and (ii) angiomyolipoma associated with tuberous sclerosis. Giant aneurysm formation is usually noted in angiomyolipomas associated with tuberous sclerosis and is rare in sporadic variety. Tumor diameter and aneurysm diameter have been used as predictors of rupture. We report a rare case of aneurysm formation in a sporadic angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipomas are benign, solitary, noninvasive lesions that most often arise in the kidney. Extrarenal manifestations of these tumors include the skin, oropharynx, the abdominal wall, retroperitoneum, gastrointestinal tract, heart, lung, liver, uterus, penis, and spinal cord. We report a patient with a giant angiomyolipoma located in the anterior mediastinum. We believe this is the seventh reported case of mediastinal angiomyolipoma and the largest reported by size. It is the second reported lesion to arise in the anterior mediastinum. Distinction from other pulmonary or thoracic masses rel

PURPOSE: Renal angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign neoplasm that may grow massive in tuberous sclerosis (TS) patients. The aim of this study was to document the characteristics of renal AML in Japanese TS patients.
METHODS: Medical records of 29 TS patients followed up at the authors' center were reviewed for the presence, size, symptom, and treatment of renal AML.
RESULTS: Twenty-four patients screened for renal AML were subdivided into 4 groups: group 0 (n = 8), no mass; group 1 (n = 5), AML less than 1 cm in diameter; group 2 (n = 4), AML 1 to 4 cm in diameter; group 3 (n = 7), AML greater t

Monotypic epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is an uncommon variant of angiomyolipoma, occurring primarily in the kidney and characterized by a predominance of HMB-45-positive epithelioid cells. EAML is generally considered a benign neoplasm, though rare cases exhibiting malignant behavior have been reported. We describe a patient with a primary retroperitoneal monotypic EAML, composed exclusively of atypical epithelioid cells, which metastasized to the liver and the mediastinum. This case represents, to our knowledge, the first description of metastatic disease occurring in an EAML of this par

We present a very rare case of retroperitoneal extrarenal epithelioid angio-myolipoma (AML). A 64-year-old man without tuberous sclerosis was admitted to our hospital for further examination of an abdominal mass lesion. Imaging analyses revealed a heterodensity and heterointensity retroperitoneal mass covering the left renal surface by ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Surgical exploration was done, and the tumor was resected with the left kidney radically. Histopathologically high cellular atypia was remarkable, and diagnosis was extrarenal epithelioid AML b

PURPOSE: We present a comprehensive resource that summarizes contemporary advances relevant to the clinical management of renal angiomyolipoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A MEDLINE search was done using the key words angiomyolipoma, hemangioma or lipoma and kidney neoplasm, and therapeutic embolization. References from these articles were reviewed to identify additional relevant source material. We identified 13 series published since 1986 comprising 336 patients as well as 24 reports of therapeutic embolization for angiomyolipoma, comprising 76 patients. To our knowledge we report the largest co

PURPOSE: To report the radiological polymorphism of angiomyolipoma (AML).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: [corrected] A retrospective series of eight cases of AML explored by US and CT scan. The diagnosis was radiological in seven cases and histopathological in one case.
RESULT: Five cases of AML were discovered fortuitously. The tuberous sclerosis of Bourneville disease (TSB) was noted in five cases. The cverage age was 37 years with female predominance noted in seven cases. The AML were multiple in half cases all of thein had TSB. The tumoral size ranged from 0.5 cm and 20 cm. Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (AML) is a newly established variant of AML, characterized by monomorphous epithelioid cells that show HMB-45 immunopositivity, and it often displays aggressive behavior. To date, they have mostly appeared in the kidneys; however, the present autopsy case of a 43-year-old female without the stigmata of tuberous sclerosis complex had a huge retroperitoneal mass, accompanied by involvement of the regional lymph nodes. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of round, polygonal or short spindle-shaped monomorphous cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and large

We present a very rare case of a retroperitoneal extrarenal angiomyolipoma accompanied by early gastric cancer. A 41-year-old Japanese man, who had undergone surgery for a type IIc early gastric cancer 2 years earlier, was admitted to hospital presenting with back pain and abdominal fullness. Computed tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen disclosed a massive fatty tumor extending from the hepatic hilus to the retroperitoneum. A large retroperitoneal tumor mass with no sign of involvement in the kidney was totally resected by radical surgery. Histologically, the tum

Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare, benign, mesenchymal tumor. We report 3 cases of atypical angiomyolipomas simulating benign hepatic tumors in 3 women free of tuberous sclerosis (Bourneville's disease). Hepatic angiomyolipomas were solitary in 2 cases and multiple in one. At imaging, the 6 lesions were large (7 cm in mean diameter), mainly hypoechoic and heterogeneous. At CT, lesions did not contain fat and were hypervascular. At MR imaging, lesions were hypointense in 4 cases and isointense in one case on T1-weighted sequences, hyperintense and isointense on T2-weighted sequences in four and
