Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme inhibitory peptides from eel (Anguilla japonica) bone collagen: preparation, identification, molecular docking, and protective function on HUVECs.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is a chronic cardiovascular disease, which can trigger some disease such as heart failure, loss of vision or kidney. There were various peptides derived from food that are recognized for their ability to inhibit ACE activity, potentially leading to a reduction in blood pressure levels in vivo. The primary objective of this research is to discover ACE inhibitory peptides from protein hydrolysates of eel bone collagen (EBCHs). METHODS: To begin, EBCHs were created and then divided through the process of ultrafiltration. The second step involved screening of peptides c

Sanguinarine Alleviates the Adverse Effects of Excessive Dietary Histamine on Growth and Intestinal and Hepatic Health in Juvenile American Eels (Anguilla rostrata).

Histamine is a significant risk factor in brown fishmeal and negatively affects histamine-sensitive fish species. The present study aimed to explore the potential protective effects of dietary sanguinarine supplementation against the adverse impacts of excessive dietary histamine on growth and intestinal and hepatic health in American eels. Four experimental diets were formulated: the basal diet (control diet), the basal diet supplemented with 500 mg kg-1 of histamine (HH diet), and the HH diet supplemented with 100 mg kg-1 and 200 mg kg-1 of sanguinarine (HH+SAN100 and HH+SAN200 diets, respec

Helminths from the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard in Japan, with a description of Acanthocephalus longiacanthus n. sp. (Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchidae).

Five helminths, including a new echinorhynchid acanthocephalan Acanthocephalus longiacanthus n. sp., are described based on specimens from the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata Quoy & Gaimard caught in a small river, western Japan. The new acanthocephalan is distinguished from the other congeners in terms of hook arrangement (8-9 longitudinal rows with 5-6 hooks per row) on proboscis, maximum length of hook blade (81-95 μm in male, 150-190 μm in female), lemnisci being longer than proboscis receptacle, and small-sized eggs (80-83 μm). Porphyridium cruentum-enriched Artemia enhances survival, growth, and viral resilience of glass eels (Anguilla bicolor bicolor) under endemic Anguillid herpesvirus-1 conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The tropical eel Anguilla bicolor bicolor is a valuable aquaculture commodity; however, the survival of glass eels during the early nursery stage remains low due to nutritional limitations and vulnerability to viral infections, especially Anguillid herpesvirus-1 (AngHV-1). Using microalgae to enrich live feed has been suggested as a strategy to enhance larval nutrition and resilience in endemic disease conditions. This study examined the effects of Artemia enriched with the red microalgae Porphyridium cruentum on the nutritional quality of live feed, survival and growth of

RNA-seq analysis revealed the pathogenicity of Vibrio vulnificus to American eel (Anguilla rostrata) and the strategy of host anti-V. vulnificus infection.

Vibrio vulnificus is a commonly pathogenic bacterium in cultivated eels, but its pathogenicity to American eel (Anguilla rostrata) and the molecular mechanism of host anti-V. vulnificus infection remains uncertain. In this study, American eels were infected with different dose of V. vulnificus to determine the LD50. Then, bacterial load in the liver and kidney histopathology were assessed post the LD50 of V. vulnificus infection. Additionally, gene expressions of 18 immune related genes in the liver, spleen and kidney were detected. Furthermore, transcriptome sequencing and enrichment of diffe

Effects of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analog and pimozide on the release of luteinizing hormone and ovulation in artificially matured Japanese eel Anguilla japonica.

Pituitary gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone (Fsh) and luteinizing hormone (Lh), control oogenesis in all vertebrates. In particular, Lh plays a key role in stimulating the final oocyte maturation and subsequent ovulation. The biosynthesis and secretion of Lh are regulated by several neurohormones, including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and dopamine. GnRH analogs, also known as Lh releasing hormone analogs (LHRHa), and dopamine antagonists are commonly used to induce sexual maturation in teleosts. However, the effects of these reagents differ among fish species. Therefore, in

Spatiotemporal expression of activin receptor-like kinase-5 and bone morphogenetic protein receptor type II in the ovary of shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis.

In the eel ovary, the expression of growth differentiation factor-9 (Gdf9) appears to be largely confined to the germ cell in early stages of oogenesis. However, both the target tissue and the function of Gdf9 in fish remain unknown. This study aimed to describe the abundance and localization of activin receptor-like kinase-5 (Alk5) and bone morphogenetic protein receptor type II (Bmpr2), which together mediate the Gdf9 signal, in the ovary of a basal teleost, the shortfinned eel, Anguilla australis, during early folliculogenesis. The cDNA encoding eel alk5 and bmpr2 genes were cloned, charact

Lipoprotein biology during induced oogenesis in the short-finned eel, Anguilla australis-hepatic target gene expression and accumulation of nutrient sources into developing oocytes.

Production of good quality eggs still plagues mass propagation efforts of anguillid eels. Understanding the lipid dynamics of artificially maturing eels will inevitably benefit captive rearing practices due to the importance of lipids for egg quality. Fortnightly sampling of shortfinned eels (Anguilla australis) subjected to hypophysation for 10 weeks allowed us to gather important information relating to multiple aspects of lipid physiology. Accordingly, expected increases in gonadosomatic (from 2.20 ± 0.14 to 23.20 ± 6.01%) and hepatic somatic indices (from 0.89 ± 0.04 to 1.93 ± 0.01%), as w

Differentially Expressed Genes and Alternative Splicing Analysis Revealed the Difference in Virulence to American Eels (Anguilla rostrata) Infected by Edwardsiella anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila.

Edwardsiella anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila are two common bacterial pathogens affecting cultivated eels, and the differences in their virulence remain unclear. In this study, after two groups of American eels (Anguilla rostrata) were administered the LD50 dose of E. anguillarum and A. hydrophila, respectively, the histopathology of the liver, trunk kidney, and spleen, as well as transcriptomic RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis of the spleen, was examined at three time points: pre-infection (Con group) and post-infection at 36 h (Ea_36 group, Ah_36 group) and 60 h (Ea_60 group, Ah_60 gro

Residue depletion and temperature- and dose-dependent withdrawal period of Oxolinic acid in Japanese eel Anguilla Japonica following bath administration under laboratory and field conditions.

Oxolinic acid (OA) is a quinolone class antimicrobial agent widely used in aquaculture, yet its off-label application via bath administration in Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) has raised concerns regarding tissue residue persistence and appropriate withdrawal periods (WTs). This study aimed to investigate the residue depletion kinetics and calculate the WTs of OA in A. japonica following 12 h bath treatment under different water temperatures (20 °C and 28 °C) and exposure concentrations (10 and 20 mg/L). Laboratory trials were conducted under controlled conditions using recirculating systems

Amylin Coexisting With Peptide YY (PYY) and Amylin/PYY Cells Correspond to Subpopulations of Glucagon- and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1-Immunoreactive Cells in the Japanese Eel (Anguilla japonica) Pancreas.

The distribution of amylin-like substances was investigated by immunohistochemistry in the pancreas of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica). Amylin-immunoreactive cells were observed in pancreatic islets. These immunostaining profiles were not observed by the preabsorption of the anti-amylin serum with synthetic amylin, indicating that the serum specifically recognized eel amylin-like peptide. Almost all amylin-immunoreactive cells were immunopositive for peptide YY, suggesting that amylin and peptide YY co-secreted from the islet cells might participate in the modulation of insulin and glucag

Differential regulation of the expression of cytochrome P450 aromatase, estrogen and androgen receptor subtypes in the brain-pituitary-ovarian axis of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) reveals steroid dependent and independent mechanisms.

This study aimed at investigating the role of sexual steroids in the regulation of the expression of the single aromatase gene and steroid receptor subtypes in the brain-pituitary-ovarian axis of the Japanese eel. Unlike other teleosts, which possess duplicated genes for aromatase, cyp19a1a and cyp19a1b, expressed in the gonads and in the brain, respectively, eel species possess a single cyp19a1. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that eel brain/gonadal cyp19a1 branches at the basis of both teleost gonadal cyp19a1a and brain cyp19a1b clades. Female eels treated with catfish pituitary homogenate (

Hidden in the gut: Metabarcoding reveals overlooked predation by the invasive European catfish (Silurus glanis).

Morphological and metabarcoding analyses provided new insights into the diet of the European catfish (Silurus glanis) in an invaded area in the Iberian Peninsula. Out of 264 S. glanis examined, data were obtained for 173 individuals through metabarcoding of intestinal contents and for 110 through morphological analysis of stomach contents. Metabarcoding consistently identified more prey taxa per sample than morphological analysis, yielding a total of 34 and 21 taxa, respectively, that primarily included fish and crustaceans. Morphological analysis demonstrated a higher detection of crustaceans

Effects of lectins with different carbohydrate-binding specificities on hepatoma, choriocarcinoma, melanoma and osteosarcoma cell lines.

The effects of lectins with different carbohydrate-binding specificities on human hepatoma (H3B), human choriocarcinoma (JAr), mouse melanoma (B16) and rat osteosarcoma (ROS) cell lines were investigated. Cell viability was estimated by uptake of crystal violet. Wheat germ lectin was the lectin with the most deleterious effect on the viability of H3B, JAr and ROS cell lines. The cytotoxicity of lectins with similar sugar-binding specificity to wheat germ lectin, including Maackia amurensis lectin and Solanum tuberosum lectin, was weaker than that of wheat germ lectin. The European eel may tolerate multiple infections at a low biological cost.

Most animals are concurrently infected with multiple parasites, and interactions among them may influence both disease dynamics and host fitness. However, the sublethal costs of parasite infections are difficult to measure and the effects of concomitant infections with multiple parasite species on individual physiology and fitness are poorly described for wild hosts. To understand the costs of co-infection, we investigated the relationships among 189 European eel (Anguilla anguilla) from Mar Menor, parasites (richness and intensity) and eel's 'health status' (fluctuant asymmetry, splenic somat

Thiobencarb toxicity and plasma AChE inhibition in the European eel.

The acute toxicity of the herbicide thiobencarb (S-4-chlorobenzyl diethylthiocarbamate) was determined for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours median lethal concentrations (LC50) were 25.7, 21.7, 17.0 and 13.2 mg/L, respectively. Fish were also exposed to a sublethal thiobencarb concentration (1/60 LC50-96 hr = 0.22 mg/L) during 96 hours in a flow-through system and then an elimination period of 192 hours in clean water was allowed. Eels were removed and blood samples taken out at each exposure time and recovery period in order to evaluate AChE activity. Thiobenca

Size does matter-a closer look on Anguillicola morphology.

The present study deals with morphological differences between two closely related parasitic nematode species (Anguillicola crassus Kuwahara et al., 1974 and Anguillicola novaezelandiae Moravec & Taraschewski, 1988) in two different experimentally infected eel species (Anguilla anguilla Linnaeus, 1758 and Anguilla japonica Temminck & Schlegel, 1847). Furthermore, it considers the question whether size differences between those two species are ontogenetically determined or host species-dependent. In order to analyse these questions, experimental infections with the four possible host-parasite s

An investigation of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor in eel plasma.

1. Carbonic anhydrase activity in blood and gill from freshwater and seawater acclimated European eels, Anguilla anguilla has been determined. 2. Plasma from freshwater and seawater eels possess a potent inhibitor of erythrocytic carbonic anhydrase, in agreement with previous investigations on freshwater fish. 3. The plasma inhibitor is equally effective against gill and gut carbonic anhydrase from the eel. Although not as potent, the eel inhibitor is also effective against CA from rainbow trout. The inhibitor was without effect on bovine-CA. 4. The inhibitor is heat-PCA- and trypsin-labile. I
