What Do Animal Models Teach Us About Congenital Craniofacial Defects?

The formation of the head and face is a complex process which involves many different signaling cues regulating the migration, differentiation, and proliferation of the neural crest. This highly complex process is very error-prone, resulting in craniofacial defects in nearly 10,000 births in the United States annually. Due to the highly conserved mechanisms of craniofacial development, animal models are widely used to understand the pathogenesis of various human diseases and assist in the diagnosis and generation of preventative therapies and treatments. Here, we provide a brief background of

[Dog-assisted therapy: clinical evidence and current challenges].

Dog-assisted therapy (DAT) represents a therapeutic intervention modality in which the interaction between patients and trained dogs is purposefully and systematically incorporated, with the aim of promoting improvements in physical, emotional, cognitive, and social variables. DAT has seen a significant increase in its implementation across clinical, educational, and community settings, alongside conceptual frameworks that support its integration into interdisciplinary therapeutic models. This article presents a systematic review of the scientific literature on the effectiveness of DAT across

Equine-Assisted Therapy in Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Alternative treatments for Post-traumatic-Stress Disorder (PTSD) have attracted attention, especially Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) including psychotherapy and occupational therapy involving horses. In this work, we measured the effectiveness of EAS in PTSD through a meta-analysis. An intensive bibliography search focusing in EAS and PTSD was conducted following the PRISMA recommendations. The search was not restricted by date. For the quantitative analyses, 5 works were selected. They were chosen based on the instrument utilized for the assessment of PTSD symptoms: the PTSD Checklist for DSM

Photobiomodulation for the management of alopecia: mechanisms of action, patient selection and perspectives.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level laser therapy was discovered over 50 years ago, when Mester in Hungary observed regrowth of hair in mice when irradiated with a ruby laser. At the present time, several different PBM devices are marketed to assist with hair regrowth in alopecia patients. This review covers the three main types of alopecia (androgenetic, areata, and chemotherapy-induced), and discusses the mechanism of action of PBM for each disease. The different devices used (mostly low powered red laser diodes), dosimetry, animal models, and clinical trials are summarized. Criteria for p

[Malta fever in a brucellosis free region: analysis of a malta fever outbreak in the Göttingen area 1982].

During April/Mai 1982 15 patients were affected with acute Malta fever around Goettingen an area known the be brucellosis-free until then. The source of infections were local flocks of sheep. The infections were mainly acquired when assisting at lamb birth or abortions. Between onset and diagnosis of the disease intervals up to 3 month occurred. Diagnostically crucial were blood cultures and serological tests. Therapy with tetracyclines or co-trimoxazole were effective in all cases. In patients with status febrilis and anamnestic contact with brucellosis-prone animals brucellosis should be con

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Autoimmune Hepatitis.

Autoimmune hepatitis is an uncommon idiopathic syndrome of immune-mediated destruction of hepatocytes, typically associated with autoantibodies. The disease etiology is incompletely understood but includes a clear association with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) variants and other non-HLA gene variants, female sex, and the environment. Pathologically, there is a CD4+ T cell-rich lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate with variable hepatocyte necrosis and subsequent hepatic fibrosis. Attempts to understand pathogenesis are informed by several monogenetic syndromes that may include autoimmune liver i

Implantation of integrated magnetically levitated biventricular assist devices (DuoCor) - a single-center clinical experience.

BACKGROUND: End-stage heart failure remains a major global health challenge with high mortality. While heart transplantation is the gold-standard treatment, the scarcity of donor hearts necessitates alternative therapies. Left ventricular assist devices effectively support patients with end-stage left heart failure, but no mature biventricular assist devices (BiVADs) currently exist for those with biventricular failure. To address this gap, we developed the DuoCor BiVAD, a novel, integrated, magnetically levitated miniaturized biventricular assist system. METHODS: This study reports the resul

Natural protease inhibitors to hemorrhagins in snake venoms and their potential use in medicine.

Snake venoms are complex mixtures of many toxins and enzymes which effectively immobilize prey without a struggle and assist in digestion. Certain animals have a remarkable resistance to envenomation of snakes. Naturally occurring factors that neutralize snake venoms have been found in the sera of most snakes and a few warm-blooded animals. These antihemorrhagic and antineurotoxic factors have been purified from snake and mammalian sera. The antihemorrhagins are not immunoglobulins since they have different physical and chemical characteristics. The natural immunity to hemorrhagins is the resu

Endoscopic techniques for full thickness intestinal biopsy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal neuromuscular diseases requires full thickness biopsy for adequate histologic evaluation of the enteric neuromuscular and ancillary cells. Historically, this has been achieved by surgical approaches. An overview of procedure evolution and current techniques of endoscopic full thickness biopsy (EFTB) for diagnosis of gastrointestinal neuromuscular disorders will be presented. RECENT FINDINGS: Emergence and advancement of endoscopic full thickness resection techniques has offered a less invasive, nevertheless an effective modality of tis

Isolation of Lancefieldella parvula in Secondary Infection from Human Bite: A Rare Occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Human bite infections most commonly manifest as skin and soft tissue infections with lower infection rates than animal bites. Lancefieldella parvula is an anaerobe Gram-positive coccus found in human oral mucosa. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 28-year-old healthy woman who suffered a deep skin and soft tissue infection in the left hand after a human bite. She presented with signs and symptoms of infection unresponsive to antibiotics, requiring admission for surgical debridement. Microbiological cultures were taken from the wound and empirical treatment was initiated w

Murine models for triple-negative breast cancer with differential responsiveness to immunotherapy.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in women. Clinical studies with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are encouraging for immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy (anti-PD-1 with paclitaxel and/or carboplatin). However, additional clinical advances may be pursued more rapidly with assistance from preclinical TNBC models including syngeneic mammary tumor cell lines. Here, we report two mammary tumor cell lines that exhibit differential responsiveness to immunotherapy in vivo. Spontaneous mammary tumors from C57BL/6J MMTV-Cre Trp53fl/+ animals were passaged serially in cell cult

Perniosis-like tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton verrucosum in cold-exposed individuals.

Trichophyton verrucosum is a zoophilic infectious agent causing 98% of the dermatophytic infections of cattle. Transmission to humans has, until recently, been rare. One reason for an increase of infection in humans and animals seems to be the decrease in immunisation of cattle. We report on three cases of pertinent human infections with disseminated, sharply defined, bluish red, partly oedematous nodules and plaques in particular not only on the thighs, but also on the trunk and arms. Two of our patients work with farm animals. The third one works as an assistant in a butcher shop, but lives

Evaluation of Serum Acute Phase Protein Concentrations in Dogs with Circumanal Gland Tumours.

The aim of this study was to determine the serum concentrations of acute phase proteins (APPs), including C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) in dogs with circumanal gland tumours. Investigations were conducted on 39 male dogs of mixed breed. The animals were divided into four groups depending on the degree of tumour malignancy and type of hormones that were dominant in the bloodstream. All measurements of serum APPs were conducted by the use of commercial diagnostic kits. In dogs with benign tumours, the concentrations of each APP decreased during therapy, whi

Photobiomodulation Therapy Associated with Heterologous Fibrin Biopolymer and Bovine Bone Matrix Helps to Reconstruct Long Bones.

Bone defects cause aesthetic and functional changes that affect the social, economic and especially the emotional life of human beings. This complication stimulates the scientific community to investigate strategies aimed at improving bone reconstruction processes using complementary therapies. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) and the use of new biomaterials, including heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB), are included in this challenge. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of photobiomodulation therapy on bone tibial reconstruction of rats with biomaterial consist

Recent advances in understanding the pathogenesis of polycystic kidney disease: therapeutic implications.

Hereditary polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a common cause of renal failure. Increasing knowledge is available regarding mechanisms of cyst development and progression, and renal functional deterioration in PKD. On the basis of this information and theories regarding the pathophysiology of these processes, studies to alter progression and potentially treat PKD have been reported. Cyst development and progression requires epithelial cell proliferation, transepithelial fluid secretion and extracellular matrix remodelling. Several interventions designed to inhibit cell proliferation or alter fl

Ménière's disease review 2005.

Ménière's disease (MD) is a complex, multifactorial disorder of the inner ear that is the most common cause of the syndrome of episodic vertigo combined with fluctuating hearing loss. In spite of a century of investigation, the etiology and pathophysiology of MD remain controversial and incompletely understood. Among the factors that have contributed to these controversies are the absence of (1) a validated clinical test, (2) an appropriate animal model, and (3) a specific treatment. Nonetheless, physicians are able to assist MD patients with a variety of tailored, symptom-specific medications

Quantum dots at the oncology interface: Transforming breast cancer diagnosis, imaging, and treatment.

Breast cancer is one of the major causes of cancer-related illnesses and deaths globally, which calls for the use of advanced technologies in early diagnosis, precise imaging, and effective therapy. Quantum dots (QDs) have become extremely versatile nanomaterials due to their size-dependent optical properties, large surface area, and easily modifiable physicochemical properties; thus, they can be used in a wide range of applications from diagnosis to therapy. Latest changes show that inorganic, carbon-based, and graphene-derived QDs can be made more biocompatible, controllable in their targeti

Wound management in a juvenile tiger (Panthera tigris) with vacuum-assisted closure (V.A.C. Therapy).

A 6-wk-old tiger (Panthera tigris) was evaluated for severe skin lacerations from an adult tiger attack. A caudal superficial epigastric skin flap was surgically placed to cover a defect that could not be closed over the hind limb; however, the skin flap did not adhere well to the granulation tissue over a period of 1 mo. The granulation bed matured and deteriorated. A subatmospheric pressure technique (vacuum-assisted closure, V.A.C.
