Rocky mountain spotted fever in Connecticut: human cases, spotted-fever group rickettsiae in ticks, and antibodies in mammals.

Three parameters were used in 1976 and 1977 to assess the status of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in Connecticut--compilation and review of clinical data on suspected human cases for the 13-year period 1965--1977, examination of tick tissues for spotted fever-group rickettsiae by the hemolymph test and direct immunofluorescence, and analyses of mammalian sera for antibodies against Rickettsia rickettsii. There were six presumptive RMSF cases which probably originated in Connecticut. Four of these cases occurred in areas where the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, abounds. A tota

Occupational allergy to animals.

This chapter reviews the epidemiology, manifestations, etiologic agents, and exposure controls related to occupational allergies from animals and insects, including both respiratory and dermatologic responses. The overall prevalence of allergic respiratory symptoms in exposed workers is about 23% 4-9% of exposed individuals develop asthma. Symptom development is related to duration and intensity of exposure. The most prevalent dermatologic findings are contact urticaria and eczematous dermatitis. While a history of atopy is associated with the risk of symptom development, this factor has poor

Animal models for medical countermeasures to radiation exposure.

Since September 11, 2001, there has been the recognition of a plausible threat from acts of terrorism, including radiological or nuclear attacks. A network of Centers for Medical Countermeasures against Radiation (CMCRs) has been established across the U.S.; one of the missions of this network is to identify and develop mitigating agents that can be used to treat the civilian population after a radiological event. The development of such agents requires comparison of data from many sources and accumulation of information consistent with the "Animal Rule" from the Food and Drug Administration (

Influence of environmental factors on tick diversity and abundance in different animal resting habitats in forest areas of the south Western Ghats.

Most tick-borne disease causing pathogens originate in wildlife and are zoonotic in nature. A key to protecting human and animal health is to understand the biology and ecology of tick establishment. The tick distribution in wild animal habitats has been attributed to multiple environmental factors, and the studies on this topic are limited. Therefore, the objective of the study is to understand the influence of environmental factors on tick diversity and abundance in wild animal resting habitats. The study was carried out in 21 different animal resting habitats in the forest areas of Wayanad

Influence of immunomodulation on the development of Listeria monocytogenes infection in aged guinea pigs.

We investigated the impact of immunomodulation on the development of listeriosis within an aged population of guinea pigs after an intragastric challenge with Listeria monocytogenes. Supplementation with vitamin E for 35 days significantly increased the level of cytotoxic T cells (CD8(+)), while treatment with cyclosporin A resulted in a 25% decrease of CD8(+) T cells. In the animals receiving the low dose (10(2) CFU) of L. monocytogenes, 50% of the control-group animals became infected. Only 22% of animals receiving the orthomolecular dose of vitamin E became infected, whereas animals that we

Descriptive epidemiology of animal bites in Indiana, 1990-92--a rationale for intervention.

Animal bites are a reality of life throughout the world. They arise out of an imperfect relationship with domestic animals and wildlife. Most bite injuries are preventable. The principal approaches to community-wide bite prevention programs include reducing the number of domestic animals roaming in the community (animal control) and teaching people to refrain from behaviors likely to provoke bites. This article addresses the epidemiologic basis and justification for a bite prevention program targeted toward children. Animal bite data from Indiana for the years 1990, 1991, and 1992 were analyze

Mineral concentrations in hair as indicators of mineral status: a review.

Mineral content of hair is affected by season, breed, hair color within and between breeds, sire, age and body location. Seasonal effects may be due to stage of growth of hair and to changes caused by perspiration, surface contamination and diet. Breed and sire effects on mineral content of hair complicate prediction of nutritional status based on hair analyses because, in many commercial cattle, neither breed nor sire is known. Hair from young animals may be lower in Zn, Mn and Fe, but is higher in Na, Ca, Cu and K than that from older animals. Pigmented hair apparently is higher in Ca, Mg, K

Seroprevalence of leptospirosis among high-risk population of Andaman Islands, India.

Leptospirosis is a severe spirochetal zoonosis in the world. It is considered an occupational disease of persons engaged in agriculture, sewage works, forestry, and animal slaughtering. A study was conducted with an objective of assessing the seroprevalence of leptospirosis among the high-risk groups of Andaman Islands. A total of 611 sera samples from different high-risk populations were collected and tested by microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Genetic characterization of the isolate was done by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) fingerprinting, and serological characterization was

Prevalence and distribution of caseous lymphadenitis in feral goats.

A total of 2,920 feral goats from pastoral areas of Western Australia were examined and the prevalence of caseous lymphadenitis was estimated to be 7.8 +/- 0.9% in goats presented for slaughter. Head, body and visceral lesions were present in 49.3%, 46.7% and 12.3% of affected goats, respectively. A comparison with previously reported data from sheep has been made and significant differences are discussed. Lung lesions were relatively uncommon in goats, whereas the distribution of carcase lesions was similar between the species. Multiple lesions appear to be less common in goats than in sheep.

Evaluation of the hemagglutination test for epidemiologic studies of leptospiral antibodies in wild mammals.

Sera from 153 wild animals of 18 species were tested for antibodies against 12 serovars of Leptospira by the microscopic agglutination (MA) test. Seventy-five percent of the animals tested were seropositive against one or more of the 12 serovars used. The most commonly found serovars were pomona, autumnalis, pyrogenes, icterohaemorrhagiae, australis, and canicola. Of 62 carnivores representing 7 species, 55 (89%) were seropositive, as were 46 (60%) of 77 rodents from 9 species. Leptospira of the serovar copenhageni serogroup icterohaemorrhagiae were recovered from kidney tissues of a Norway ra

A case of "reversed cannibalism": the piglets damaging the sow.

Sows introduced to a new housing system containing farrowing pens with slatted floor showed increased occurrence of lesions of the vulvar region, caused by the piglets during the later stages of the lactation period. An investigation was undertaken in which the activity of the piglets, particularly rooting and investigatory behavior, was examined and compared to that of piglets kept on straw. Although the occurrence of vulvar lesions disappeared spontaneously before the conduction of the investigation, the results revealed that piglets on slatted floor spent significantly more time chewing on

Year-to-year variation in the density of Ixodes ricinus ticks and the prevalence of the rodent-associated human pathogens Borrelia afzelii and B. miyamotoi in different forest types.

The human pathogens Borrelia afzelii, which causes Lyme borreliosis and B. miyamotoi, which causes relapsing fever, both circulate between Ixodes ricinus ticks and rodents. The spatiotemporal dynamics in the prevalence of these pathogens have not yet been fully elucidated, but probably depend on the spatiotemporal population dynamics of small rodents. We aimed to evaluate the effect of different forest types on the density of infected nymphs in different years and to obtain more knowledge about the spatial and temporal patterns of ticks and tick-borne pathogens. We analysed unfed nymphal ticks

Multi-trophic interactions driving the transmission cycle of Borrelia afzelii between Ixodes ricinus and rodents: a review.

The tick Ixodes ricinus is the main vector of the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causal agent of Lyme borreliosis, in the western Palearctic. Rodents are the reservoir host of B. afzelii, which can be transmitted to I. ricinus larvae during a blood meal. The infected engorged larvae moult into infected nymphs, which can transmit the spirochaetes to rodents and humans. Interestingly, even though only about 1% of the larvae develop into a borreliae-infected nymph, the enzootic borreliae lifecycle can persist. The development from larva to infected nymph is a key aspect in this

Masting by beech trees predicts the risk of Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Lyme borreliosis and other tick-borne diseases is increasing in Europe and North America. There is currently much interest in identifying the ecological factors that determine the density of infected ticks as this variable determines the risk of Lyme borreliosis to vertebrate hosts, including humans. Lyme borreliosis is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) and in western Europe, the hard tick Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector. METHODS: Over a 15-year period (2004-2018), we monitored the monthly abundance of I. ricinus ticks (nym

The significance of shooting angle in seal shooting.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between shooting angle to the head and animal welfare outcomes in the hunt of young harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus). The study population consisted of young harp seals belonging to the Greenland Sea harp seal population. A sample of 171, 2-7 weeks old, weaned harp seals of both sexes were included. The study was conducted as an open, randomised parallel group designed trial during the regular hunt. The animals were allocated into four groups, A-D, according to the observed shooting angle to the head, defined as the angle between the

[The effect of duodenal exclusion on the cellular endocrine adaptation of the duodenum after performing an antrectomy. An experimental study in the rat].

We present an experimental study in rats with the aim to value the adaptative variations over the duodenal gastrin and somatostatin cell producing populations after antrectomy and gastrojejunostomy. 30 animals were distributed into two groups of 15 animals each. Group 1 rats underwent antrectomy and gastrojejunostomy, the animals of group 2 were considered as a controls. The results obtained show that after antrectomy and gastrojejunostomy an increase of gastrin producing cells is produced as well as decrease of somatostatin producing cells, both figures are statistically significant, concludi

Human leukocyte antigens in occupational allergy: a possible protective effect of HLA-B16 in laboratory animal allergy.

Human leukocyte antigens (HLA-A, -B, -C, and -DR loci) and possible associations with occupational allergy to laboratory animals and atopy indicators were studied in laboratory animal workers with airway symptoms (n = 92) and in those who were symptom free (n = 27), as well as in a population reference group of blood donors in good health (n = 123). The laboratory animal workers, but not the population reference group, were allergologically examined with skin prick testing to common environmental and animal allergens together with measurement of total serum IgE levels. Seven HLA antigens, i.e.

Fatalities from venomous and nonvenomous animals in the United States (1999-2007).

OBJECTIVE: To review recent (1999-2007) US mortality data from deaths caused by nonvenomous and venomous animals and compare recent data with historic data. METHODS: The CDC WONDER Database was queried to return all animal-related fatalities between 1999 and 2007. Rates for animal-related fatalities were calculated using the estimated 2003 US population. Inclusion criteria included all mortalities that were a consequence of bite, contact, attack, or envenomation (ICD-10 codes W53-W59 and X20-X29). RESULTS: There were 1802 animal-related fatalities with the majority coming from nonvenomous an
