A study on the genetic inheritance of ankyloglossia based on pedigree analysis.

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abnormally short lingual frenum. Its prevalence in the newborn population is approximately 4%. Its mode of inheritance has been studied in some articles, but no conclusion has been established. Also, no relevant report has been published in Korea. This study was conducted to elucidate the genetic inheritance of ankyloglossia via pedigree analysis. METHODS: In this study, 149 patients with no other congenital anomaly who underwent frenuloplasty between March 2001 and March 2010 were studied. Pedigrees were made

Clinical approach of ankyloglossia in babies: report of two cases.

Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly of the tongue characterized by a short lingual frenum, resulting in restricted movement of the tongue. Its etiology is undefined and there is no gender preference. Few studies are available in the literature and the diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia in infants remains controversial. We report two cases of infants submitted to lingual frenectomy, emphasizing the management of ankyloglossia and its implications in breast-feeding.

X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia in an Icelandic family.

Information was available on 293 family members and spouses of seven generations in an Icelandic family with high frequency of cleft of secondary palate and ankyloglossia. The authors have personally investigated 182 individuals in generations IV-VII and have drawn blood from over 100 members for genetic marker studies. The senior author, Dr. Björnsson, has operated on two-thirds of the affected individuals. Twenty-six family members had cleft palate (CP) and, of these, 19 (17 male and two females) had ankyloglossia as well (CP + A). Twenty females and one male had only ankyloglossia (A). All

Ankyloglossia and Breastfeeding Duration: A Multicenter Birth Cohort Study.

Background and Objective: The prevalence of ankyloglossia and its impact on breastfeeding practices may be overestimated, leading to surgical overtreatment in newborns. The study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of ankyloglossia in the first year of life and investigate the association with exclusive and total breastfeeding duration in different regions of Brazil. Materials and Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study involved the recruitment of mother-infant pairs soon after childbirth in public hospitals in three state capitals in Brazil. Interviews were held with the mothe

Management of ankyloglossia by functional frenuloplasty using diode laser.

Ankyloglossia or tongue-tie is a condition present since birth that results in restricted movement of the tongue due to the attachment of the lingual frenulum. The condition affects breastfeeding, speaking, swallowing, occlusion, and proper tongue posture. Tongue ties vary in degree of severity from mild cases of mucus membrane bands to complete tongue ties where the tongue adheres to the floor of the mouth. Treatment options such as speech therapy, frenotomy, frenectomyhave all been suggested in the literature. Surgical correction often causes, bleeding, chances of infection, swelling, and rela

Ankyloglossia: Typical Characteristics, Effects on Function, and Clinical Implications.

The purpose of this article is to (1) define the diagnostic characteristics of ankyloglossia, (2) identify potential problems associated with ankyloglossia, and (3) discuss treatment options, when treatment is appropriate. This article is based on a review of the literature, including recent systematic reviews, and the author's experience as a cleft and orofacial specialist. Ankyloglossia is a common congenital condition characterized by an anterior attachment of the lingual frenulum on the tongue. This causes difficulty elevating and/or protruding the tongue tip. As such, ankyloglossia has be

Ankyloglossia and Tethered Oral Tissue: An Evidence-Based Review.

Tethered oral tissue may represent anatomic variation or true pathology with functional limitations. The most prevalent functional limitation is impaired feeding due to ankyloglossia. Treatment options include conservative management with feeding support versus intervention such as frenotomy or frenuloplasty. The benefits of intervention have yet to be fully elucidated. Many can agree that intervention may improve maternal pain during breastfeeding, but the impact of these procedures on feeding efficiency and intake is debated. Alternate ties such as posterior ankyloglossia and lip tie have be

Parental and provider perspectives on social media about ankyloglossia.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate and identify the concerns and opinions expressed in both parental and provider posts on social media about ankyloglossia. METHODS: In this study, posts on Twitter between 1/1/2008 and 12/31/2018 were collected using search terms and hashtags specific to pediatric ankyloglossia. The search terms included a primary phrase to indicate ankyloglossia along with a pediatric identifier. Tweets that met inclusion criteria were analyzed qualitatively via conventional content analysis. After all tweets were categorized, descriptive statistics were completed to determine frequ

Ankyloglossia Superior Associated With Moebius Syndrome: A Case Report.

Ankyloglossia superior is an exceedingly rare congenital condition that consists of a connection between the tongue and hard palate. This abnormality is considered part of the ankyloglossia superior syndrome when found with other malformations such as limb deformities, gastrointestinal malformation, and cleft palate. Ankyloglossia superior can also be associated with other known syndromes. We have presented the case of a female infant born with multiple malformations, including partial agenesis of the feet and hands, micrognathia, a lack of expression of the facial muscles, convergent strabism

Ankyloglossia superior syndrome: Case report and updated literature review.

Ankyloglossia superior (palatoglossal adhesion) is an extremely rare congenital condition with only 14 previously reported cases. When found in conjunction with other congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palate, gastrointestinal malformations, and limb malformations, this anomaly is considered part of ankyloglossia superior syndrome. We present a case of a newborn female found to have ankyloglossia superior syndrome. Surgical repair is also described. We review the available literature and discuss theories regarding the etiology of ankyloglossia superior syndrome. Clinicians should have a h

Ankyloglossia in Newborns: Clinical Implications and Management-A Narrative Review.

Background: Ankyloglossia is a congenital anomaly characterized by restricted tongue mobility due to a short, thick, or tight lingual frenulum. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes current concepts on etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, functional implications, and management for ankyloglossia in newborns. Results: Ankyloglossia can compromise breastfeeding dynamics, manifesting as suboptimal latch, maternal nipple pain, and inefficient milk transfer, and may influence orofacial function if unrecognized. Because anatomical appearance alone does not reliably predict fu

[On the reasons for ankyloglossia relapse. Part 1. Frenotomy in newborns].

The article presents modern data on the structure of the lingual frenulum in newborns and factors associated with restricted tongue mobility besides the length of the mucosal part of the frenulum. The diversity of these factors dictates to limit the indications for frenectomy in newborns to cases with breastfeeding negative events evaluated and documented by a pediatrician. The assessment protocol should include weight gain but also child and mother position, duration, and comfort of the breastfeeding sessions, as well as breast condition in mother. The cases of long-term complications of fren
