Morphology and closing mechanism of the mandibular gland orifice in ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The mandibular gland of ants releases chemical compounds with functions ranging from nestmate alarm and recognition to antimicrobial defense. While the morphology of this ethologically important gland is well investigated in several species, the mechanism of secretion release in ants was not explicitly addressed so far. To clarify this question, we examined the anatomy of the gland orifice in ant species from 14 different subfamilies employing different techniques. The orifice close to the mandibular base is located on an area called mandalus. Our investigations revealed variation in mandalar

Blade-running: an efficient yet simple behaviour to potentially combat summit disease in ants.

BACKGROUND: Social systems are attractive targets for parasites. Once infiltrated they are able to manipulate the host to contribute to their further dispersal. A wide array of parasites causes summit disease: driving their host up on elevated points on plants from where propagules are then dispersed. In ants, previous observations suggested the existence of a simple social prophylactic strategy that could help reduce the pathogen's dispersal success through early corpse disposal e.g., in the case of summit-causing pathogenic Pandora fungus. RESULTS: We experimentally tested the efficiency of

Innate visual attraction before, during and after escape from adverse substrates in carpenter ants.

Many animals exhibit an innate attraction to dark areas or objects, driving orientation behaviours such as beacon aiming. In ants, some species do not appear to display beacon aiming. Here, we show that in one such species, Camponotus japonicus, the behaviour is triggered when crossing liquid-covered surfaces, regardless of locomotor pattern and the presence of water in the liquid. Once initiated, beacon aiming persisted even after the ants transitioned from water to dry substrates, as evidenced by their reorientation towards a displaced beacon. Beacon aiming could be observed before the ants

Bimodal alarm signals modulate responses to monomodal alarm signals in Camponotus modoc carpenter ants.

Distressed western carpenter ants, Camponotus modoc, produce alarm pheromone and substrate-borne vibrations. The alarm pheromone attracts nestmates but the effects of vibratory signals, or of bimodal pheromonal and vibratory signals, are not known. Worker ants of two Camponotus congeners reportedly stand still ("freeze") or run fast in response to engineered drumming vibrations inputted on plastic, but many responses to ant-produced vibratory signals on wood have not yet been investigated. Generally, orientating toward signalers under vertebrate predator attack seems maladaptive and not benefi

Multifunctional mandibles of ants: Variation in gripping behavior facilitated by specific microstructures and kinematics.

The elongated mandibles of certain ant species are dexterous grippers that can output a wide range of forces as needed for various tasks. Our combined experimental and theoretical research reveals the multifunctionality of the mandibles of Harpegnathos venator that is facilitated by specific microstructures and characteristic kinematics. First, we found that H. venator can pull off a spider's (Heteropoda venatoria) leg by closing its long mandibles. We observed that the ant usually clamps the spider's leg using the distal or middle part of its mandibles. In contrast, the ant can grip its egg w

Relative Effects of Temperature, Light, and Humidity on Clinging Behavior of Metacercariae-Infected Ants.

The lancet fluke, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, is perhaps the best-known example of parasite manipulation of host behavior, which is manifested by a radically changed behavior that leaves infected ants attached to vegetation at times when transmission to an herbivore host is optimal. Despite the publicity surrounding this parasite, curiously little is known about factors inducing and maintaining behavioral changes in its ant intermediate host. This study examined the importance of 3 environmental factors on the clinging behavior of red wood ants, Formica polyctena , infected with D. dendriticum .

Fire ants represent an important risk for anaphylaxis among residents of an endemic region.

BACKGROUND: Imported fire ants (IFA) represent a potential anaphylactic risk to IFA-sensitized individuals. OBJECTIVE: We examined the prevalence of allergic sensitization to IFA, yellow jacket venom (YJV), and peanut in an adult population from an IFA-infested region, Augusta, Georgia. METHODS: Specific IgE to IFA, YJV, and peanut were determined by using the Pharmacia UniCAP assay in 200 random blood donors from an Augusta blood bank. These results were compared with specific IgE to identical allergens in a random sample of blood donors from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (OKC), a nonendemic regi

Comparative transcriptomics and phylostratigraphy of Argentine ant odorant receptors.

Nestmate recognition in ants is regulated through the detection of cuticular hydrocarbons by odorant receptors (ORs) in the antennae. These ORs are crucial for maintaining colony cohesion that allows invasive ant species to dominate colonized environments. In the invasive Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, ORs regulating nestmate recognition are thought to be present in a clade of nine-exon odorant receptors, but the identity of the specific genes remains unknown. We sought to narrow down the list of candidate genes using transcriptomics and phylostratigraphy. Comparative transcriptomic analys

Application of improved ant-lion algorithm for power systems.

An improved ant-lion algorithm is proposed to solve the load allocation problem to improve the efficiency of load allocation in the power system. The global search capability and optimization performance of the algorithm have been significantly improved by introducing elite weights and chaotic search mechanisms. The innovation of the research lies in not only optimizing economic goals, but also considering environmental goals, achieving dual optimization of economy and environment. The average running time of the proposed algorithm in Sphere function and Griebank function was 2.67s and 1.64s,

The Alarm Pheromone and Alarm Response of the Clonal Raider Ant.

Ants communicate via an arsenal of different pheromones produced in a variety of exocrine glands. For example, ants release alarm pheromones in response to danger to alert their nestmates and to trigger behavioral alarm responses. Here we characterize the alarm pheromone and the alarm response of the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biroi, a species that is amenable to laboratory studies but for which no pheromones have been identified. During an alarm response, ants quickly become unsettled, leave their nest pile, and are sometimes initially attracted to the source of alarm, but ultimately move awa

Molecular approach for ante-mortem diagnosis of rabies in dogs.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The ante-mortem diagnosis of rabies is of great significance in establishing the status of infection in dogs, especially since they are involved in exposure to human beings. The present study was, therefore, undertaken to elucidate the most appropriate secretion/tissue for reliable diagnosis of rabies in 26 living dogs suspected to be rabid. METHODS: In the present study 26 dogs suspected to have rabies were included for ante-mortem diagnosis of rabies in clinical samples of skin and saliva by molecular approach viz. heminested reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain r

What's eating you? ant-induced alopecia (pheidole).

Ant-induced alopecia is a rare cause of acute, localized, nonscarring hair loss. It is most commonly caused by Pheidole pallidula ants, which can be found worldwide but are most common in Iran. The resulting alopecia can have many morphologic patterns (eg, patch, linear, nondiscrete) and thus ant-induced alopecia should be considered in the differential diagnosis for patients from endemic areas who present with new-onset localized hair loss. The condition is self-limited; however, patients should be evaluated for other more common causes of alopecia, especially in the absence of a convincing h

Enforcement of reproductive synchrony via policing in a clonal ant.

In insect societies, worker policing controls genetic conflicts between individuals and increases colony efficiency. However, disentangling relatedness from colony-level effects is usually impossible. We studied policing in the parthenogenetic ant Cerapachys biroi, where genetic conflicts are absent due to clonality and reproduction is synchronized through stereotyped colony cycles. We show that larval cues regulate the cycles by suppressing ovarian activity and that individuals that fail to respond to these cues are policed and executed by their nestmates. These individuals are genetically id

The trail pheromone of the venomous samsum ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis.

Ant species use branching networks of pheromone trails for orientation between nest and resources. The current study demonstrated that workers of the venomous samsum ant, Pachycondyla sennaarensis (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Ponerinae), employ recruitment trail pheromones discharged from the Dufour's gland. Secretions of other abdomen complex glands, as well as hindgut gland secretions, did not evoke trail following. The optimum concentration of trail pheromone was found to be 0.1 gland equivalent/40 cm trail. This concentration demonstrated effective longevity for about one hour. This st

Sex mosaics in a male dimorphic ant Cardiocondyla kagutsuchi.

Gynandromorphy, or the development of organisms with a combination of male and female morphological features, is common in Hymenoptera. The underlying mechanism is likely associated with the sex-determination system, and studying this phenomenon should lead to a deeper understanding of both embryonic development and sex determination. The reproductive capabilities of gynandromorphs (hereafter, sex mosaics) remain unclear. We studied gynandromorphy in the Malaysian ant Cardiocondyla kagutsuchi, which has sex mosaics of queens (gynandromorphs; mosaic of queens and winged male) and workers (ergat

[Ant venoms: a rare cause of allergic reactions in Switzerland].

In Switzerland, unlike other countries, allergic reactions to ants are a rare phenomenon when compared to the well known allergies to bee and wasp venom. In this report we present a series of case reports and a review of the different types of allergy to ants. Due to increased travel and heterogeneity of the population, we have observed several patients with sensitisation or allergy to the venom of imported fire ants (Solenopsis), a species of ant found in the Americas. Furthermore, allergic reactions to bites of the mound-building wood ant (Formica rufa), whose habitat is Central and Northern
