Differentiating generalized anxiety disorder from anxiety disorder not otherwise specified.

The diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) have elicited numerous criticisms and suggestions for revision. Several researchers have noted that many patients fail to meet full criteria for the disorder, but nevertheless experience clinically significant symptoms. These "subsyndromal" cases are labeled anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (AnxNOS) under the current diagnostic system. The purpose of the this study was to determine the diagnostic criteria most often "missed" in cases that resemble GAD, but do not meet full criteria for the diagnosis. Individuals diagnosed w

Comorbid anxiety and mood disorders among persons with social anxiety disorder.

Axis I comorbidity is associated with greater severity of social anxiety disorder. However, the differential effects of comorbid mood and anxiety disorders on symptom severity or treatment outcome have not been investigated. We evaluated 69 persons with uncomplicated social anxiety disorder, 39 persons with an additional anxiety disorder, and 33 persons with an additional mood disorder (with or without additional anxiety disorders). Those with comorbid mood disorders reported greater duration of social anxiety than those with uncomplicated social anxiety disorder. They were also judged, before

Social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder: serotonergic and dopaminergic neurocircuitry.

Awareness that an amygdala-based fear circuit plays a crucial role in mediating fear conditioning as well as anxiety symptoms is growing. The efficacy of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in certain anxiety disorders has been argued to reflect their ability to modulate this circuit. Whether additional neurocircuits play a differentiating role in specific anxiety disorders, such as social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), is an ongoing subject of investigation. A review of the literature suggests that in social anxiety disorder, dopaminergically mediated striatal ci

Quality of life in anxiety disorders: a comparison of obsessive-compulsive disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is growing recognition that the anxiety disorders are disabling disorders associated with substantial morbidity and impaired quality of life (QOL). Nevertheless, there have been few studies comparing QOL across these conditions. SAMPLING AND METHODS: 337 outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 220), panic disorder (PD; n = 53), or social anxiety disorder (SAD; n = 64) were compared using a number of assessment scales to compare objective and subjective impairment in QOL. The association of QOL with symptom severity and comorbid depression was also assessed.

[Anxiety and Generalized Anxiety Disorder in Elite Athletes].

Physical activity is recommended as a strategy for promoting mental health, and it can even be integrated into treatment plans for psychiatric disorders affecting the general population. However, elite athletes are a subpopulation with protective and risk factors inherent to high-level competition and are not shielded from psychiatric symptoms and conditions. The mental health of elite athletes has been the subject of increasing attention, driven in part by the initiatives of the International Olympic Committee and the growing importance of sports psychiatry. This article is a narrative review

High anxieties: the social construction of anxiety disorders.

Anxiety has always been part of the human condition, with accounts of its various manifestations, including acute shyness and stage fright, dating back to classical antiquity. Nonetheless, since the end of the Second World War, reported levels of anxiety have risen alarmingly. At the beginning of the 21st century, anxiety disorders constitute the most prevalent mental health problem around the globe, afflicting millions of people. What social factors account for this stunning development in the mental health field during the past half century? Some observers target the ever increasing pace and

Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for detecting anxiety disorders in adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite being highly prevalent mental health conditions, anxiety disorders frequently go undiagnosed. The Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) is a widely used self-report scale for measuring the severity of anxiety, which has also been used for anxiety screening. OBJECTIVES: To assess the test accuracy of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in adults against structured or semi-structured diagnostic interviews for the following target conditions: any anxiety disorder (AAD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), and panic disorder (PD). SECONDARY OBJECTIVES: - To explore sources of heterogenei

Differences in anxiety sensitivity factors between anxiety and depressive disorders.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) refers to the tendency to fear physical sensations associated with anxiety due to concerns about potential physical, social, or cognitive consequences. Many previous studies were limited by the use of the anxiety sensitivity index (ASI) or the ASI-revised (ASI-R), which are both measurements with unitary or unstable structures. No recent study that has utilized the ASI-3 examined the relations between AS dimensions and depression. Thus, we examined multiple relationships between AS and anxiety disorders and depression using the ASI-3. METHODS: The total sa

What are the odds of anxiety disorders running in families? A family study of anxiety disorders in mothers, fathers, and siblings of children with anxiety disorders.

This family study investigated (1) the prevalence of anxiety disorders (ADs) in parents and siblings of children (n = 144) aged 8-18 years with ADs compared to control children (n = 49), and (2) the specificity of relationships between child-mother, child-father, and child-sibling ADs. Clinical interviews were used to assess current DSM-IV-TR ADs in children and siblings, and lifetime and current ADs in parents. Results showed that children with ADs were two to three times more likely to have at least one parent with current and lifetime ADs than the control children (odds ratio (OR) = 2.04 an

Do Youth with Separation Anxiety Disorder Differ in Anxiety Sensitivity From Youth with Other Anxiety Disorders?

Studies on the relationship between separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in childhood and panic disorder (PD) in adolescence and adulthood have yielded results which suggest a common underlying vulnerability for both disorders. In this study, we examined whether one such possible vulnerability-anxiety sensitivity-differed for youth diagnosed with SAD versus other anxiety disorders. Anxiety sensitivity was assessed using the Childhood Anxiety Sensitivity Index (CASI) in 315 clinic-referred youth (ages 6-17, 113 girls). 145 children (46%) were diagnosed with one or more primary anxiety disorder, in

[Change in the diagnosis and therapy of anxiety disorders. 1: Phenomenology of anxiety and new approaches in the classification of anxiety disorders].

The pathological states anxiety neurosis and phobias, diagnostically classified under the neuroses, are, influenced by a recent American diagnostic classification, now designated anxiety disorders in clinical psychiatry. With this approach, which is more phenomenological than etiological in orientation, new diagnostic possibilities--among other things--have arisen. In the first place, an accurate differentiation of periodic and chronic states of anxiety can be made, while the clinical phenomena can be considered from various aspects, in order to evaluate simultaneously 1. the current clinical
