• Double aortic arch (DAA) typically occurs in isolation. • DAA with bilateral coarctation (COA) is very rare with three prior documented cases. • In addition to DAA with bilateral COA our case also has complex intracardiac disease. • Echocardiography served as the primary diagnostic tool with advanced imaging as a useful adjunct.

We present the first described use of the Gianturco-Grifka Vascular Occlusion Device to close a moderate patent ductus arteriosus associated with the rare congenital condition of right aortic arch with isolation of the left subclavian artery. Left vertebral artery "steal" through the moderate patent ductus arteriosus was eliminated by this transcatheter technique. Cathet. Cardiovasc. Intervent. 47:320-322, 1999.

BACKGROUND: Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition frequently associated with cardiovascular anomalies, particularly supravalvular aortic stenosis. The coexistence of supravalvular aortic stenosis, aneurysmal dilation, and infective endocarditis with vegetations in the aortic arch is exceedingly rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an 8-year-old Arab boy from Syria with Williams syndrome who presented with fatigue, tachycardia, dyspnea, fever, chills, and night sweats. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a dilated aortic arch with large vegetation at the origin of the brachiocephal

OBJECTIVES: We investigated the relationship between aortic arch configuration and reconstruction methods used in the Norwood procedure.
METHODS: Our surgical database identified 162 patients who underwent the Norwood procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, including variants, from January 2010 to December 2023. Of the 162 total cases, this study focused on the 135 patients who were assessed using computed tomography and aortic angiography. We have mainly employed direct anastomosis (direct), patch augmentation using an autologous pericardium (patch) and the chimney technique (chimney:

A case of clinically unsuspected fatal interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is described. A 17-day-old Japanese girl unexpectedly entered respiratory arrest at home. On autopsy, the heart was hypertrophic, with no apparent connection between the ascending and descending aortas. The ascending aorta branched into common carotid and right subclavian arteries, whereas the left subclavian artery arose from the descending aorta, which was supplied by the ductus arteriosus, indicating type B IAA. In addition, ventricular septal defect, bicuspid aortic valve, patent foramen ovale, and thymic aplasia were ide

Anomalous origin of the coronary artery from the aortic arch associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome is an extremely rare anomaly. Coronary anomalies can significantly deteriorate the clinical outcomes of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. We describe the case of a newborn with concomitant hypoplastic left heart syndrome and abnormal origin of the left coronary artery arising from the distal aortic arch.

We present a rare case of a two-week-old infant with tetralogy of Fallot , absent pulmonary valve syndrome , right aortic arch, and disconnected left pulmonary artery (LPA) whose origin was from ductal ligament adjacent to the left subclavian artery. One-stage surgical correction, including closure of ventricular septal defect (VSD), LPA reconstruction and reconnection to the pulmonary trunk, reduction in size of the right pulmonary artery (RPA), and right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction with valved conduit, was successfully performed with good clinical mid-term outcome.

We present a rare case of familial Holt-Oram syndrome diagnosed sonographically at 18 weeks of gestation. The foetus had serious bilateral upper limb malformations, a ventricular septal defect and a type B interrupted aortic arch, while the mother had bilateral upper limb malformations only. The pregnancy was terminated. A pathological and radiological examination of the foetus confirmed the prenatal sonographic findings. Although genetic investigation of TBX5 mutations was not available in our locality at the time of diagnosis, the geneticists made a clinical diagnosis of familial Holt-Oram s

A case is described of a newborn infant, small for gestational age, with the features of the "fetal alcohol syndrome", who presented a murmur within the first few days of life, and died at age 7 days in heart failure. Autopsy revealed interruption of the aortic arch, type A, an aortopulmonary window and intact interventricular septum. The association of "fetal alcohol syndrome" and cardiac malformation is discussed, with reference to other cases described in the literature.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a relatively common disorder in pediatrics, frequently presenting with immune dysfunction, cardiac malformations, and hypoparathyroidism, all stemming from the development of the fourth branchial arch. While intracardiac malformations, such as tetralogy of Fallot, are highly prevalent, aortic abnormalities are also common. We report the case of a male diagnosed with 22q11.2DS at 12 years of age. His medical history included neonatal hypocalcemia, developmental delays, and later-onset tetany due to hypoparathyroidism. Despite a normal echocardiogram, a c

Hybrid single-stage repair of Kommerell's diverticulum in a right aortic arch.Aortic arch anomalies, isolated or associated with congenital heart defects, are cardiovascular manifestations frequently associated with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Kommerell's diverticulum in the context of a right aortic arch is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly, consisting in aneurysmal degeneration of the origin of an aberrant left subclavian artery. Open surgical repair has been the treatment paradigm, but in recent years, hybrid and endovascular procedures have also been proposed. In this report we present

BACKGROUND: The hybrid palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome has emerged as an alternative approach to the Norwood procedure. The development of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in-stent stenosis can cause retrograde aortic arch stenosis (RAAS), leading to significant morbidity. This study aimed to identify potential mechanisms of PDA in-stent stenosis contributing to RAAS.
METHODS: Tissues from stented PDAs were collected from 17 patients undergoing comprehensive stage II repair between 2009 and 2014. Patients requiring RAAS intervention based on cardiology-surgery consensus were defi

BACKGROUND: A left recurrent nerve palsy caused by left atrium hypertrophy, dilatation of the left pulmonary artery or a thoracic aortic arch aneurysma is named Ortner's syndrome.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 84-year old male patient with a posttraumatic aneurysm of the distal aortic arch known for 20 years, which became symptomatic by new presentation of an acute hoarseness caused by a left sided recurrent nerve palsy due to rapid aneurysma expansion. Because of the aneurysma localization, the advanced age and the patient?s morbidity he was treated by a hybrid procedure with an extra

PURPOSE: To report thoracic stent-graft repair in patients with acute aortic syndromes, an intramural hematoma (IMH), and intractable pain despite maximum medical therapy.
CASE REPORTS: Since January 2002, 4 patients [2 men (40 and 53 years old) and 2 woman (62 and 83 years old)] with type B aortic dissection have presented with an IMH >3 mm in the aortic arch. The patients were treated with a "freeflo" Valiant thoracic stent-graft, which was deployed under "zero aortic pressure" using either adenosine arrest or rapid ventricular pacing. To enhance false lumen thrombosis, a distal extension w

A study of the teratogenic effects of Fertilysin, a bis(dichloroacetyl)diamine, on hamster embryos was undertaken for a comparison of Fertilysin-induced malformations with the DiGeorge syndrome of human patients, a rare birth defect characterized by thymic and parathyroid gland agenesis, abnormal facies, and aortic arch malformations. In treated hamsters, malformations of the aortic arches were found to be consistently produced, and many of these anomalies could not be explained by conventional methods of analysis. A pathogenetic scheme to classify malformations of the aortic arch and great ve
