Trilobolide and its analogues belong to the guaianolide type of sesquiterpene lactones, which are characteristic and widely distributed within the families Asteraceae and Apiaceae. Certain guaianolides are receiving continuously increasing attention for their promising sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-ATPase (SERCA)-inhibitory activity. However, because of their alkylation capabilities, they are generally toxic. Therefore, the search for compounds with significant immunobiological properties but with decreased cytotoxicities suitable for use in immune-based pharmacotherapy is ongoing. Therefor

Although we are familiar with common British plants that are poisonous, such as Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) and Aconitum napellus (monkshood), the two most poisonous plants in the British Flora are Oenanthe crocata (dead man's fingers) and Cicuta virosa (cowbane). In recent years their poisons have been shown to be polyacetylenes (n-C2H2). The plants closely resemble two of the most common plants in the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), celery and parsley. Unwittingly, they are ingested by naive foragers and death occurs very rapidly. The third plant Anamirta derives from South-East As

In continuation of our work on Indian celery (Seseli diffusum (Roxb. ex Sm.) Santapau & Wagh; Umbelliferae), the fractionation of the 80% MeOH-H(2) O extract of the seeds was performed to identify the principles responsible for its folk use as an antispasmodic and diuretic. Several compounds were isolated as active components: seselin (1) and anthriscinol methyl ether (4) showed a selective cytotoxicity to some yeast strains. Compound 1 also showed spasmolytic activity. On the other hand, isopimpinellin (3) and isorutarin (5) exhibited a spasmogenic effect on the smooth muscle preparations. Co

Little is known about the biosynthesis of yatein, in spite of its importance as a typical heartwood lignan and a key biosynthetic intermediate of the antitumor lignan podophyllotoxin. The present study, based on individual administration of [13C]phenylalanine and deuterium labelled lignans and simultaneous administration of two distinct lignans labelled with deuterium atoms to Anthriscus sylvestris, established the two independent branch pathways from matairesinol, one to afford yatein via thujaplicatin, 5-methylthujaplicatin, and 4,5-dimethylthujaplicatin and the other to bursehernin via pluv
