BACKGROUND: Apocrine hidrocystomas are benign cystic tumors that develop from apocrine gland proliferation. In most cases, they are translucent solitary lesions of the face, generally found in the periorbital region, on the scalp or on the neck. More rarely, apocrine hidrocystomas may be multiple and appear on the ears, trunk, shoulders and genital area. They generally appear in adulthood, with only a few pediatric cases being reported, of which three in the genital area, with a solitary case of multiple hidrocystomas of the scrotum, although no cases of spontaneous involution of hidrocystomas

Cutaneous scent glands secrete chemical signals for communication, a significant portion of which is to convey information about male reproductive status. This might be particularly important to animals with intraspecific variation in male reproductive activity, such as bears. Male brown bears mark trees with their scent secreted from back apocrine and sebaceous glands during the breeding season and thus might convey information about reproductive status. Therefore, we speculated that the development of scent glands in the back reflects reproductive performance. We investigated the effects of

A 43-year-old Chinese man presented with generalized hypohidrosis, which he had had since birth, without obvious abnormalities of other skin appendages except a sparse beard and axillary hairs. The sweat test revealed localized sweating on the face, axillae and palms. Histopathologic examination showed that the sweat glands were absent in the forearm and thigh, but some eccrine and apocrine sweat glands were present in the right axilla. S-100 was expressed in the nerve terminals surrounding the acini and ducts of the eccrine sweat glands, while PGP9.5 was positive in the acini of apocrine glan

Two types of glands are found in the outer third of the human earcanal: sebaceous glands that produce sebum and modified apocrine glands that produce apocrine sweat. Together, these substances make up cerumen, which serves to clean, lubricate, and, to some extent, protect the earcanal from bacteria and fungus. Excessive/impacted cerumen can cause tinnitus, vertigo, itching, pain, external otitis, and hearing loss. Two populations are known to have a high incidence of excessive/impacted cerumen: individuals with mental retardation and the elderly. Anthropologists have used cerumen type to tract

Apocrine hamartoma is a rare benign neoplasm. The histology is characterized by an excess of apocrine glands located predominantly in the reticular dermis. Pigmented apocrine hamartoma represents a histopathological variation of apocrine hamartoma containing tubules and linear cysts covered by apocrine cells on the inside with melanin and on the outside with myoepithelial cells. At this time, 4 cases of this pathology have been described. This case report aims to present a case of pigmented apocrine hamartoma of the vulva in a young patient, emphasizing that while occurrence is rare, it must b

We herein report a patient who clinically presented with a pigmented, flat plaque in the vulvar area. Histological examination showed a benign lesion mainly composed of tubular and cystic glands with apocrine differentiation. The most striking histological feature was the deposition of finely granular melanin pigment both in the epithelial cells and in the luminal surface of the glands. In addition, Melan-A immunostaining showed the presence of numerous melanocytes within the lesion suggesting that the pigment deposition was secondary to colonization of the lesion by melanocytes. We therefore

Apocrine metaplasia, specifically, involves the development of cells resembling those in apocrine glands, characterized by their distinctive cytoplasmic features. Apocrine metaplasia in the gallbladder represents a new and intriguing discovery, marking a significant milestone in medical literature. Furthermore, clear cell metaplasia is often observed in other organs like the cervix and has never been documented in the gallbladder. The coexistence of apocrine and clear metaplasia challenges existing paradigms surrounding gallbladder pathology, prompting a reevaluation of the underlying mechanis

Poromas were originally classified as eccrine tumors which predominantly consist of poroid ductal cells and differentiate in the direction of sweat gland ducts. However, there have now been many reports on poromas with additional differential characteristics differentiating in the direction of sebaceous and/or apocrine glands and/or hair follicles. These tumors have been termed apocrine poromas. Multilineage differentiation within a poroma can be explained by the embryological association of the sweat duct with the so-called folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine unit. The clinical and histopathological

Two polyclonal antibodies, directed against N-terminal amino acids (1-36) or the midregion (amino acids 34-53) of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), were used to localize PTHrP in a variety of normal and neoplastic canine tissues. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) immunoreactivity was demonstrated using anti-bovine PTH (amino acids 14-34). The following tissues (among others) stained strongly positive for PTHrP: all layers of epidermal keratinocytes, with the most intense staining of the basal layer; hair follicle keratinocytes; myoepithelial cells of dermal apocrine glands, mammary glands,

The term "hidradenitis suppurativa" is firmly entrenched in the dermatological literature although it refers to a false pathogenetic concept. The term was historically coined based merely on the characteristic distribution of the apocrine glands and the anatomical coincidence with the disease process. At center stage is not a suppurative inflammation of the apocrine sweat glands but an occlusion of the hair follicles, comparable to acne vulgaris. Reviewing the literature on this subject, we were astonished to find that even articles that concluded that the entity represents a form of follicula

Hidradenoma papilliferum of the anogenital region was previously believed to originate from apocrine glands but has recently been accepted as originating from anogenital mammary-like glands. We describe a case of hidradenoma papilliferum with mixed features of syringocystadenoma papilliferum and mammary-like glands from the left labia majora of a 25-year-old woman. Histopathologically, the lesion showed an epithelial lining with apocrine secretion, and like syringocystadenoma papilliferum, the lesion extended from the epithelium as invaginations into the dermis. Adjacent to this lesion were du

Tumours of cutaneous sweat glands are uncommon, with a wide histological spectrum, complex classification and many different terms often used to describe the same tumour. Furthermore, many eccrine/apocrine lesions coexist within hamartomas or within lesions with composite/mixed differentiation. In addition to the eccrine and apocrine glands, two other skin sweat glands have recently been described: the apoeccrine and the mammary-like glands of the anogenital area. In this review (the second of two articles on skin adnexal neoplasms), common as well as important benign and malignant lesions of

We herein report an unusual case of apocrine carcinoma on the forehead. The lesion was formed by the anastomosis of numerous tubular structures with widespread decapitation secretion, thus demonstrating apocrine differentiation. However, we observed some unusual histopathologic features that differed from those found in typical examples of apocrine ductal carcinoma, namely: 1) a relatively well-circumscribed lesion in the dermis, and 2) nodular or solid aggregations composed of basaloid cells. We believe the present case is an apocrine ductal carcinoma, although it has a nodular appearance and

Apocrine nevi are benign adnexal cutaneous hamartomas characterized by localized hyperplasia of mature apocrine sweat glands (ASG). Although ASG proliferation can be found in a number of acquired or congenital adnexal skin tumors, pure apocrine nevi are exceedingly rare. We present herein a new typical case of this tumor that was studied immunohistochemically, and review the relevant literature in order to delineate its clinicopathological features.

BACKGROUND: SOX10 is a newer Schwannian and melanocytic marker that has generated great interest for its relative sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of neural crest-derived tumors. Previous studies with SOX10 have shown positive immunohistochemical expression in cutaneous eccrine glands and negative expression in eccrine ducts, apocrine glands and hair follicles. Thus, we hypothesized that some sweat gland tumors of presumed eccrine origin would be positive for SOX10, whereas apocrine-derived sweat gland tumors would not.
METHODS: A mouse monoclonal anti-SOX10 (clone BC34: Biocare M

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of treating axillary osmidrosis by trimming the apocrine glands under direct vision after blunt dissection of the axillary flap through double mini-incisions on both sides of the axilla to prevent postoperative hematoma.
METHODS: The clinical data of 108 patients with axillary osmidrosis were retrospectively analyzed. Treatment involved blunt dissection of the axillary flap through double mini-incisions and trimming of the apocrine glands under direct vision. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of treatment-combined electrocauterization after removal of apocrine sweat glands with ultrasound-guided (BOTOX) injection for adolescents with axillary bromhidrosis. From January 2015 to January 2018, 90 adolescents with axillary bromhidrosis were recruited and randomly divided into three groups (group A, B, and C). Patients in group A underwent electrocauterization after removal of apocrine sweat glands, patients in group B received ultrasound-guided BOTOX injection, and patients in group C had electrocauterization after the removal of apo

Moll gland is a modified tubular-shaped apocrine sweat gland, which is located on the margin of the eyelid. Moll glands are also known as ciliary glands. The function of these glands was not well known for a long time. However, based on the different studies, it was proved that Moll glands are active from birth and have local immunologic function producing immunoglobulin A. We present a case of Moll adenocarcinoma, a type of apocrine carcinoma, arising from the right upper eyelid of a 57-year-old man. Although Moll gland cysts are frequently seen, this type of adnexal malignancy is extremely u

Five cases of extramammary Paget's disease of the vulva were studied by histologic, ultrastructural, and immunologic methods. In one of these cases, the associated invasive adnexal carcinoma was studied in a similar fashion. In all five cases, carcinoma-in situ of the sweat glands was observed. In two cases, the glands were identified as aporcrine. In the other three it could not be determined whether they were apocrine or eccrine. In one case tumor cells were seen extending from a focus of underlying carcinoma-in-situ of sweat glands through the excretory duct into the surface epithelium. The

Extramammary Paget's disease is an uncommon intra-epidermal malignant neoplasm that arises in area rich in apocrine glands. Common sites of occurrence include the vulva, perianal region, perineum, and scrotum. The lesion may be accompanied by an invasive adenocarcinoma or adenocarcinoma in situ of the apocrine glands. Generally, the prognosis is poor. Herein, we report two cases of extramammary Paget's disease, one involving the penoscrotal area with bilateral inguinal and pelvic lymph node metastases, the other involving the scrotal area without metastases.
