Dolichocolon is an under-reported, under-diagnosed etiology of chronic constipation that is often overlooked as being a primary diagnosis. We present a case of an undiagnosed dolichocolon in a young adult female whose initial presentation was concerning of appendicitis. Eventually, the patient underwent a subtotal colectomy as a definitive treatment for chronic constipation. Dolichocolon is an anatomical variant that can have severe lifelong consequences, such as chronic constipation, which greatly affects a patient's quality of life and overall health if undiagnosed. The purpose of this case

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of non-obstetric acute abdomen in pregnant women. We examined the patients who were admitted to our emergency department with abdominal pain and diagnosed with acute appendicitis in the light of the literature.
METHODS: Seventeen pregnant patients with acute appendicitis who were admitted to the emergency department of Sanliurfa Training and Research Hospital between the years of 2016-2019 were retrospectively analyzed using an electronic recording system. Our patients were evaluated concerning age, gestational week, clinical status, the

Severe complications following colonoscopy are rare. This is a case report of a 44-year-old woman, who presented to an emergency department (ED) 24 hours following an uncomplicated colonoscopy performed in an out-patient clinic. Acute contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) was performed, showing acute appendicitis, which was later confirmed by a laparoscopy and histology. Weeks prior, the patient had been admitted to the ED with lower abdominal pain. On this occasion, CECT was performed, showing acute inflammation of the sigmoid colon.

Umbilical hernia is a common cause for patient presentation to the surgeon, often on a nonemergent basis for a bulge at or lateral to the umbilicus but occasionally under emergency circumstances for pain or bowel obstruction when the hernia contents become incarcerated or strangulated. Risk factors for umbilical hernia include female gender, obesity, and ascites. A defect in the abdominal wall fascia at the umbilicus allows the preperitoneal adipose tissue, omentum, or small or large bowel to protrude through the defect. Rarely described is herniation of the appendix through an umbilical herni

QUESTION: While the diagnosis of acute appendicitis is relatively straightforward, chronic appendicitis is an entity that can be controversial and is often misdiagnosed. How and when should clinicians be investigating chronic appendicitis as a cause of chronic and recurrent abdominal pain in the pediatric population?
ANSWER: Chronic appendicitis is a long-standing inflammation or fibrosis of the appendix that presents clinically as prolonged or intermittent abdominal pain. It is often a challenging diagnosis and might result in complications such as intra-abdominal infections or bowel obstruc

A teenage girl was admitted to the paediatric assessment unit with non-specific abdominal pain that gradually localised to the right iliac fossa (RIF). She remained systemically well; investigations including blood tests, urine sample and abdominal ultrasound were inconclusive. Surgical opinion was sought and the decision was made to perform a diagnostic laparoscopy due to the ongoing pain. Laparoscopy showed no evidence of any significant pathology, and appendicectomy was performed following the routine practice. Numerous pinworms came out while the appendix was resected. The RIF pain resolve

A woman aged 64 years presented as an emergency with a mass in the right iliac fossa, clinically within the abdominal wall, but an otherwise soft abdomen. Systemically, she was quite well with normal vital signs. Blood tests revealed raised inflammatory markers, and an abdominal CT scan demonstrated a perforated appendix with associated large subcutaneous abscess. This represents a rare presentation of a common condition, demonstrating how appendicitis can still be a challenging problem for the clinician. The patient underwent incision and drainage of the abscess, resulting in the formation of

A 19-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain 10 h after ingesting a capsule endoscope. The pain subsequently localised to the right iliac fossa with guarding and cough/percussion tenderness. Follow-up pelvic ultrasound showed a tender non-compressible appendix consistent with appendicitis. The patient underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy with good recovery. This report describes an unusual presentation of appendicitis following ingestion of a capsule endoscope.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a waterborne trematode with numerous subtypes affecting different areas of the body. Rob Ferreira Hospital is located in an endemic area for schistosomiasis in the Lowveld region of South Africa. We set out to determine the prevalence of Sch istosoma in appendicitis.
METHODS: From 2009 to 2013, all appendix samples removed in theatre were reviewed. A total of 304 cases were retrieved. Viable ova, calcified ova, or schistosomal granulomas was considered proof of exposure.
RESULTS: Thirty-one out of the 304 cases revealed evidence of schistosomal exposure, equati

Appendicitis is the most common abdominal emergency. While the clinical diagnosis may be straightforward in patients who present with classic signs and symptoms, atypical presentations may result in diagnostic confusion and delay in treatment. Abdominal pain is the primary presenting complaint of patients with acute appendicitis. Nausea, vomiting, and anorexia occur in varying degrees. Abdominal examination reveals localised tenderness and muscular rigidity after localisation of the pain to the right iliac fossa. Laboratory data upon presentation usually reveal an elevated leukocytosis with a

Acute appendicitis is perhaps the commonest cause of acute abdomen and surgical intervention in the form of open or laparoscopic appendicectomy. Stump appendicitis is an uncommon late complication of appendicectomy; where inflammation occurs in the remaining appendicular stump. Delayed diagnosis of this condition may result in serious complications. This literature review has looked into the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of Stump appendicitis.

Retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent acute appendectomy in the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department of the Desgenettes Military Hospital in Lyon, France from the 1st of November 2009 to the 21th of February 2011, turned up two cases of appendicular parasitosis for a prevalence of 3.3%. Both patients presented acute appendicular oxyuriasis caused by Enterobius vermicularis that was discovered inadvertently after appendectomy. This unexpected diagnosis raises questions about the exact role of parasites in the physiopathology of appendicitis. Though appendicitis

Acute appendicitis is the most common acute surgical condition in children. Parasitic infestations are ubiquitous on a worldwide basis and are seen in the United States because of increasing international travel and emigration from developing countries. These infestations may produce symptoms of acute appendicitis, although the role of parasitic infestation in relation to appendicitis is controversial. Intestinal parasites may cause significant morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with symptoms of acute appendicitis in whom intramural parasites were found during laparoscopic surgery. H

Acute appendicitis is the most common reason for emergency abdominal surgery and must be distinguished from other causes of abdominal pain. Family physicians play a valuable role in the early diagnosis and management of this condition. However, the overall diagnostic accuracy achieved by traditional history, physical examination, and laboratory tests has been approximately 80 percent. The ease and accuracy of diagnosis varies by the patient's sex and age, and is more difficult in women of childbearing age, children, and elderly persons. If th diagnosis of acute appendicitis is clear from the h

Acute appendicitis is the most common acute surgical infection during pregnancy. Although usually pyogenic in origin, parasitic infections account for a small percentage of cases. Despite the relatively high prevalence of acute appendicitis in our environment, it is not commonly associated with schistosomiasis. We report here the association of pregnancy and appendicitis caused by Schistosoma haematobium. Schistosomiasis is very common complication of pregnancy in hyperendemic areas. Schistosome egg masses can lodge throughout the body and cause acute inflammation of the appendix, liver and sp

Acute appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency occurring during pregnancy. To determine possible methods for improving diagnostic and management accuracy, a retrospective review was conducted of 23 pregnant patients who underwent laparotomy with a preoperative diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Gestational stage at presentation included the first trimester in 2 patients, the second trimester in 6 patients and the third trimester in 15 patients. Eighteen patients (78.26%) had pathologically proven acute appendicitis. Perforation occurred in 2 patients. Postoperative fetal complications
