A hypothalamic hamartoma associated with an arachnoid cyst in an 8-year-old boy is reported herein. He presented with precocious puberty, and neuroimaging studies demonstrated a solid mass in the prepontine cistern and a huge arachnoid cyst in the left cranial fossa. The mass appeared isointense to the surrounding cerebral cortex on T1-weighted magnetic resonance images, hyperintense on T2-weighted images, and was not enhanced after administration of Gd-DTPA. The patient underwent a left frontotemporal craniotomy and a cyst-peritoneal shunt was inserted. Histological features of the cyst wall

Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts are seen most frequently in the thoracic region, particularly near the midline posteriorly. A thoracic intradural arachnoid cyst in this typical location is reported, with the additional unusual finding of herniation of the spinal cord through an anterior defect in the dura matter. The MRI findings are described.

Intrasellar arachnoid cyst is very rare. We report a case of intrasellar arachnoid cyst. A 44-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of his headache and visual disturbance on August 6, 1993. Neurological examination revealed bilateral decreased visual acuity and visual field defect. Endocrinological examination showed panhypopituitarism. Other neurological findings were normal. X-ray film of the skull showed a ballooning dilation of the sella turcica with thinning of the sellar floor. CT scan showed a cystic lesion with CSF-density occupied the sella. After intravenous administration of con

A male infant was born with asphyxia following a prolonged breech delivery at 39 weeks of gestation. He had a chylohemothorax from birth. Soon after birth he exhibited flaccid paraplegia with an absence of deep tendon reflexes in the lower extremities. At 17 days of age, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) disclosed a hypodense area in the thoracic cord between C7 and Th4 in T1-weighted images, and spinal sonography revealed an echo-free space compressing the spinal cord in the same region observed with MRI. A spinal cyst was removed surgically at 24 days of age. The cyst was confirmed by patholo

BACKGROUND: Adult arachnoid cysts are known to be stable and asymptomatic but their history remains undefined.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors report the case of an 81-year-old woman with progressive hemiplegia and aphasia. CT scan revealed a voluminous left frontotemporal arachnoid cyst with a major mass effect on the midline and contralateral blocked hydrocephalus. Endoscopic ventriculocystostomy was performed with a spectacular neurological improvement.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Symptomatic adult arachnoid cysts are extremely rare. To our knowledge, no similar clinical case of a growing a

Hydatid cysts of the posterior fossa are extremely rare. Intracranial hydatid cysts are more common in children and occur more frequently in the supratentorial space. A 7-year-old boy was admitted to the emergency department because of intense headache, nausea, vomiting, and progressive drowsiness that developed within the period of a week. On radiological examination a round, 2.5 × 2.5-cm cystic lesion appeared in the ambient cistern and caused hydrocephalus as a result of extrinsic aqueductal stenosis. The cyst was successfully removed using the puncture, aspiration, irrigation, and resectio

Lumbar arachnoid cysts (ACs) and arachnoiditis may appear similar on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and may appear difficult to diagnose accurately. Considering that lumbar arachnoid cysts have a benign source, in contrast to arachnoiditis, surgical intervention poses a challenge. We present a case initially assumed to be arachnoiditis but later confirmed as an arachnoid cyst by MRI and computed tomography (CT) myelogram. The goal of this report was to provide a clearer understanding of the pathophysiological differences and key diagnostic features, including imaging techniques and clinical

Background: Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are non-neoplastic, intracranial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled cavities lined with arachnoid membranes. Most of them are found incidentally and are asymptomatic. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and demographic characteristics of ACs and to investigate the frequency of complications. Methods: ACs were classified as cerebral and cerebellar, and were evaluated according to location and size using the Galassi classification. Results: Evaluation was made of 103 patients with AC admitted to the pediatric neurology department. The patients compr

OBJECTIVE: Symptomatic sacral arachnoid cysts are extremely rare in pediatric patients, resulting in a lack of consensus regarding optimal treatment measures. The current study evaluated the clinical symptoms and surgical indications, techniques, and outcomes of pediatric patients who underwent treatment for sacral arachnoid cysts with the aim of developing recommendations for follow-up and treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective study included pediatric patients who underwent surgical treatment for sacral arachnoid cysts between January 2000 and December 2020 at the Department of Pediatric Ne

Arachnoid cysts are frequent incidental findings on brain scans. Traditionally, they are regarded as harmless, congenital structures which do not require surgical treatment. In the rare cases where surgery is indicated it can be due to haemorrhage, hydrocephalus or cranial nerve affection caused by the cyst. However, recent literature suggests a correlation between arachnoid cysts and cognitive and affective symptoms. The hypothesised pathomechanisms include pressure, affected neuronal or glial metabolism and inflammation. If this is correct a more active approach might benefit the patients as

Arachnoid cysts (AC) are reported to have a prevalence of up to 2.6% in children. Most AC remain indolent, but others may expand or rupture to cause life-threatening symptoms of raised intracranial pressure. Currently, there are 2 controversial topics with regards to the management of ACs: the indications for surgery and the choice of surgical procedure. We therein report our institution's neurosurgical experience for symptomatic AC over a 22-year period and corroborate our results with published literature. This is a single institution, retrospective study conducted at KK Women's and Children

OBJECTIVES: the prevalence of intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts is higher in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) than in the general population. A genotype correlation was reported for intracranial aneurysms, but it is unclear for arachnoid cysts. Therefore, the genotype correlation with intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts was investigated in ADPKD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: intracranial aneurysms and arachnoid cysts were screened by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and PKD genotypes were examined using next-generation sequencing for 169 patients w

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical significance of arachnoid cysts.
METHODS: The scans of 6978 patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging of the internal acoustic meatus for unilateral cochleovestibular symptoms were retrospectively reviewed. We identified the scans with arachnoid cysts, and assessed the statistical associations between the laterality, location and size of the arachnoid cyst, the laterality of symptoms, the patients' age and gender.
RESULTS: In a total of 37 arachnoid cysts identified in 36 patients (0.5 per cent), no associations were identified between the laterality

OBJECTIVES: The symptom and neuroimaging as indications for treating arachnoid cysts (ACs) are not adequate. Understanding the communication between cyst and subarachnoid space is helpful for decision-making. We took a dynamic study of ACs using CT cisternography (CTC) and proposed a classification of arachnoid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total 52 symptomatic patients with ACs were enrolled in this prospective study. CTC images were ordered, in all enrolled patients, at the 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after the intrathecal Omnipaque administration. Enhancement in cysts was measured quantitativ
