Expanding Recognition of Rickettsia parkeri Rickettsiosis in Southern Arizona, 2016-2017.

Rickettsia parkeri rickettsiosis is an emerging, tick-borne disease in the United States (US), transmitted by the bite of Amblyomma maculatum group ticks. Clinical manifestations include fever, headache, myalgia, maculopapular rash, and a characteristic eschar that forms at the site of the tick bite. Arizona's index case of R. parkeri rickettsiosis was reported in 2014. Seven additional confirmed and probable cases were identified during 2016-2017 through routine investigation of electronic laboratory reports and by self-reporting to public health authorities. Serum samples were evaluated for

Detection of Mycoplasma gallisepticum in House Finches ( Haemorhous mexicanus) from Arizona.

In 1994, an endemic poultry pathogen, Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG), was identified as the causative agent of a novel disease in house finches ( Haemorhous mexicanus). After an initial outbreak in Maryland, MG spread rapidly throughout eastern North American populations of house finches. Subsequently, MG spread slowly through the northern interior of North America and then into the Pacific Northwest, finally reaching California in 2006. Until 2009, there were no reports of MG in the southwestern United States east of California. In August 2011, after reports of house finches displaying conjunc

Arizona bark scorpion venom resistance in the pallid bat, Antrozous pallidus.

The pallid bat (Antrozous pallidus), a gleaning bat found in the western United States and Mexico, hunts a wide variety of ground-dwelling prey, including scorpions. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the pallid bat is resistant to scorpion venom, but no systematic study has been performed. Here we show with behavioral measures and direct injection of venom that the pallid bat is resistant to venom of the Arizona bark scorpion, Centruroides sculpturatus. Our results show that the pallid bat is stung multiple times during a hunt without any noticeable effect on behavior. In addition, direct injec

St. Louis encephalitis virus possibly transmitted through blood transfusion-Arizona, 2015.

BACKGROUND: St. Louis encephalitis virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that infrequently causes epidemic central nervous system infections. In the United States, blood donors are not screened for St. Louis encephalitis virus infection, and transmission through blood transfusion has not been reported. During September 2015, St. Louis encephalitis virus infection was confirmed in an Arizona kidney transplant recipient. An investigation was initiated to determine the infection source. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The patient was interviewed, and medical records were reviewed. To determine the like

Surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections in Southern Arizona, 2010-2014.

BACKGROUND: The Binational Border Infectious Disease Surveillance program began surveillance for severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) on the US-Mexico border in 2009. Here, we describe patients in Southern Arizona. METHODS: Patients admitted to five acute care hospitals that met the SARI case definition (temperature ≥37·8°C or reported fever or chills with history of cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath in a hospitalized person) were enrolled. Staff completed a standard form and collected a nasopharyngeal swab which was tested for selected respiratory viruses by reverse transcript

Rocky Mountain spotted fever from an unexpected tick vector in Arizona.

BACKGROUND: Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a life-threatening, tick-borne disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii. This disease is rarely reported in Arizona, and the principal vectors, Dermacentor species ticks, are uncommon in the state. From 2002 through 2004, a focus of Rocky Mountain spotted fever was investigated in rural eastern Arizona. METHODS: We obtained blood and tissue specimens from patients with suspected Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ticks from patients' homesites. Serologic, molecular, immunohistochemical, and culture assays were performed to identify the causative agent.

Fetal alcohol syndrome--Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, and New York, 1995-1997.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is caused by maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and is one of the leading causes of preventable birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States. FAS is diagnosed on the basis of a combination of growth deficiency (pre- or postnatal), central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction, facial dysmorphology, and maternal alcohol use during pregnancy. Estimates of the prevalence of FAS vary from 0.2 to 1.0 per 1,000 live-born infants. This variation is due, in part, to the small size of the populations studied, varying case definitions, and different survei

The specificity of Centruroides sculpturatus Ewing (Arizona lethal scorpion) hemolymph agglutinins.

C. sculpturatus sera agglutinate human erythrocytes independently of the ABO blood group, enzyme treatment, incubation temperature or sex of the scorpions. Tested with human lymphocytes and reptile and bird erythrocytes, C. sculpturatus serum reacts like an anti-sialic acid agglutinin. With leukemic lymphocytes, titers are higher than with normal lymphocytes. Mammalian erythrocytes show characteristic agglutination patterns for C. sculpturatus for Limulus polyphemus (horseshoe crab) that suggest different receptors for agglutinins of both species. Cross absorption and elution experiments indic

Sexual Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review of the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale Sexual Dysfunction in Parkinson Disease: A Systematic Review of the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects older individuals and can cause sexual dysfunction (SD). SD is a determinant of general well-being; but is infrequently assessed in professionally. The Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) measures SD; unlike other scales, it is minimally invasive and requires little time to complete. This review aimed to assess the prevalence of SD in patients with PD using ASEX. METHODS: Were searched the keywords, "sexual dysfunction," "Parkinson's disease" and "ASEX" in 9 databases. RESULTS: The prevalence of SD ranged from 65%-90%. SD was associated with old

Policy Versus Lived Reality: Recreation Time and Physical Activity in Arizona Jails.

OBJECTIVE: Recreation time provides important opportunities for physical activity, time outdoors, and stress reduction during incarceration, yet little is known about how recreation time policies are documented and implemented in US jails. We documented recreation time policies in Arizona county jails and assessed the degree to which written policies align with operational practices. METHODS: Using a modified policy surveillance approach, we abstracted recreation‑related policies from 14 Arizona jail handbooks. We documented operational practices through structured interviews with administrat

Chronic exposure to aerosolized Arizona test dust reduces visual acuity in mice.

Air pollution is associated with increased incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma and other retinal diseases. The time course of molecular and cellular changes induced by chronic air pollution exposure that lead to retinal pathology are unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of moderate levels of air pollution on visual acuity and retinal phenotypes in mice using Arizona test dust (ATD) as a surrogate for ambient air pollution. Mice were exposed to aerosolized standardized test dust for three hours a day, four days a week, for up to four months in a custom-b

Bark Scorpion Envenomation Capture-Recapture Estimate in Maricopa County, Arizona, 2017-2021.

Introduction: Bark scorpion (Centruroides sculpturatus) envenomations (SE) can cause life-threatening reactions and occur commonly in Arizona. Methods: We described the epidemiology of reported SE in Maricopa County during 2017-2021 using hospital discharge data (HDD) and regional poison center (PC) data. We also estimated actual SE incidence using 2-source capture-recapture methodology. Results: In total, 45,179 SE were reported across both systems. During 2017-2021, Maricopa County hospitals recorded 17,884 unique visits in hospital discharge data. PCs consulted on 30,331 SEs. Capture-recapt

Haboob Dust Storms and Motor Vehicle Collision-related Trauma in Phoenix, Arizona.

BACKGROUND: The Sonoran Desert region, encompassing most of southern Arizona, has an extreme climate that is famous for dust storms known as haboobs. These storms lead to decreased visibility and potentially hazardous driving conditions. In this study we evaluate the relationship between haboob events and emergency department (ED) visits due to motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) in Phoenix, Arizona. METHODS: This study is a retrospective analysis of MVC-related trauma presentations to Phoenix, AZ, hospitals before and following haboob dust storms. These events were identified from 2009-2017 prim

"Sniffing" out SARS-CoV-2 in Arizona working dogs: an exploratory serosurvey.

Susceptibility to and infection with SARS-CoV-2 in companion animals has been well-documented throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveillance for the virus in dogs has largely been focused on household pets; however, other canine populations may also be impacted. We partnered with a local veterinary hospital with a high working dog patient volume to conduct viral and neutralizing antibody testing in working dogs and identify potential risk factors in the dog's work and home environments. Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in law enforcement and security working dogs in Arizona found 24.81% (32/129) of
