OBJECTIVE: Smallpox vaccination has been associated with notable side effects and adverse events. This study assessed the frequency of each among public health workers immunized during the 2003 Arkansas civilian smallpox vaccination campaign to allow individuals and policymakers to make informed decisions whether repeat vaccination, as recommended in 10-year intervals, should be considered.
DESIGN AND SAMPLE: This descriptive study summarizes postvaccination surveillance data for all civilians receiving smallpox vaccine (Dryvax) in Arkansas in 2003.

Adult female guinea worms ( Dracunculus spp.) usually are reported to occur singly in the extremities of their hosts, from which they deliver their larvae into the water through fistulae in the host's skin. The optimal mode of delivery for extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants remains unknown. We reviewed the medical records of 374 ELBW infants (gestational age 23-34 weeks) delivered between 1998 and 2003 at UAMS. The cesarean section rate was 63.9%. The overall mortality rate was 16.0%. The mortality rate for vaginally delivered infants was 26.7% (36/135) vs. 10% (24/239) for cesarean section (P < .0001). Cesarean delivery was associated with higher odds of survival without severe brain injury (SBI) (OR = 2.33, 95% CI [1.36, 4.00]).

This study examines the role that life chances and choices play in determining quality of life among homeless people. Given the prominent negative impact of homelessness, this paper specifically examines the impact of length of time homeless and location on adverse quality of life. OLS regression examined quality of life among 264 homeless adults living in Northwest Arkansas and Birmingham, Alabama.
