Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Angelo Poliziano were two of the most important humanists of the Italian Renaissance. They died suddenly in 1494 and their deaths have been for centuries a subject of debate. The exhumation of their remains offered the opportunity to study the cause of their death through a multidisciplinary research project. Anthropological analyses, together with documentary evidences, radiocarbon dating and ancient DNA analysis supported the identification of the remains attributed to Pico. Macroscopic examination did not reveal paleopathological lesions or signs related to

Several precedents have confirmed numerous infirmities caused by arsenic poisoning, including immune suppression and cancer. Exposure to arsenic leads to alterations of the cellular machinery and eventually cell death, depending on the dose and duration of exposure. Oxidative stress induced by arsenic is the major mechanism by which it inflicts cellular toxicity, challenging the survival-support - autophagy and culminating in apoptosis in the thymus and spleen of mice. Curcumin, a potent dietary anti-oxidant with known anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory properties, was assessed for therapeut

Dimercaptosuccinic acid, or succimer, is an oral, heavy-metal chelating agent used to treat lead and heavy-metal poisoning. Although the drug is mainly used for the treatment of lead intoxication, initial data has shown encouraging results for the treatment of mercury and arsenic poisoning as well. This article focuses on the use of dimercaptosuccinic acid as a chelating agent and provides some general information on dimercaptosuccinic acid.

Following acute arsenic ingestion, a 35 year old woman experienced multiple organ failure, including renal and respiratory insufficiency, toxic hepatitis, peripheral neuropathy, and encephalopathy. In addition, she developed an anemia; the bone marrow showed a striking dyserythropoiesis with megaloblastic features. Her recovery was heralded by normalization of the bone marrow morphology, followed by improvement in all other organ dysfunction except for the peripheral neuropathy. Arsenic poisoning is a cause of megaloblastic anemia; early hematologic recovery suggests favorable prognosis.

BACKGROUND: In the Ganges Delta, chronic arsenic poisoning is a health concern affecting millions of people who rely on groundwater as their potable water source. The prevalence of anemia is also high in this region, particularly among women. Moreover, arsenic is known to affect heme synthesis and erythrocytes and the risk of arsenic-induced skin lesions appears to differ by sex.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in 147 arsenic-exposed Bangladeshi women to assess the association between anemia and arsenic-induced skin lesions.
RESULTS: We observed that the odds of arsenic-related sk

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to arsenic is associated with neoplastic, cardiovascular, endocrine, neuro-developmental disorders and can have an adverse effect on women's reproductive health outcomes. This study examined the relationship between arsenic skin lesions (a hallmark sign of chronic arsenic poisoning) and age of natural menopause (final menopausal period) in populations with high levels of arsenic exposure in Bangladesh.
METHODS: We compared menopausal age in two groups of women--with and without arsenic skin lesions; and presence of arsenic skin lesions was used as an indicator for

Arsenic is a ubiquitous metalloid compound commonly found in the environment, and it is usually found in combination with sulphur and metals. Arsenic is considered as a therapeutic as well as poisoning agent since ancient times. It causes toxic effects on different organs, mainly the liver. In this review, we focused on the molecular mechanism of arsenic-induced hepatotoxicity. Here we envisaged the bridge between arsenic and hepatotoxicity with particular focus on the level of hepatic enzymes such as ALT, AST, and ALP. Here, we attempted to elucidate the role of arsenic in redox imbalance on

The potential association between coal-burning arsenic exposure and type 2 diabetes (T2D) was examined through a case control study, conducted in coal-burning arsenic poisoning areas in the Guizhou Province. This study included patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Control subjects without type 2 diabetes were recruited randomly after gender and age 1:1 matching. All subjects completed questionnaire surveys and underwent physical examination and whole blood arsenic level testing. The whole blood arsenic level was associated with a significant increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes (75th ve

: High arsenic (As) levels in food and drinking water, or under some occupational conditions, can precipitate chronic toxicity and in some cases cancer. Millions of people are exposed to unacceptable amounts of As through drinking water and food. Highly exposed individuals may develop acute, subacute, or chronic signs of poisoning, characterized by skin lesions, cardiovascular symptoms, and in some cases, multi-organ failure. Inorganic arsenite(III) and organic arsenicals with the general formula R-As2+ are bound tightly to thiol groups, particularly to vicinal dithiols such as dihydrolipoic a

Arsenic exposure is a global health concern. This toxic metalloid is ubiquitous in the environment and contaminates food and drinking water. Once ingested, it undergoes a complex metabolic process within the body, which contributes to its accumulation and reactivity. Arsenic toxicity stems from the induction of oxidative stress, inhibition of thiol-containing proteins, and mimicry of inorganic phosphates. Arsenic poisoning is associated with the development of reproductive disorders. In males, arsenic causes a reduction in testicular weight and alterations in steroidogenesis and spermatogenesi

Ronpibul village dwellers in the southern part of Thailand have been exposed to arsenic in the water and the environment over three generations. Over the past decades, clean water supplies, utilization and consumption have been introduced to the area. The villagers still use and select rainwater to other forms of potable water. In 2000, the epidemiological survey by Siripitayakunkit (Siripitayakunkit, U. Survey of Chronic Arsenic Poisoning in Ronpiboon, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, 2000. Proc. 6th International Conference on the Biochemistry of Trace Elements, Guelph, Canada) showed prevalen

Arsenic (As) poisoning has proven to be a major threat worldwide because of its toxic effects on the human body. As toxicity through drinking water is a global health concern. The toxicity of As is known to affect the liver, kidney, lungs, muscles, cardiovascular system, and nervous system and can even induce diabetes. Further As can cause skin lesions leading to notable diseases in the skin like Bowen's disease. Chronic exposure to As has caused many tragedies in Eastern, and several Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. Long-term exposure to As makes it an immediate threat that shoul

Arsenical compounds were used as early as 2000 BC, both as medicines as well as poisons. Arsenicals gained importance in the beginning of the last century as the primary mode of treating syphilis. In 1931, Folkner and Scott used an arsenical preparation called Fowler's solution in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia. This continued to be used until the introduction of busulphan in 1953. In the 1970s, arsenic trioxide was introduced for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia in China and was found to be extremely effective in treating this condition. Since then, numerous in vitro

Psoriasis, characterized as a chronic relapsing disease with a protracted course, often drives patients to seek relief through Chinese folk remedies (CFR). Nonetheless, the complex compositions of these remedies frequently result in unintended adverse effects, notably various types of heavy metal poisoning. Our study involved an exhaustive collection and analysis of clinical data from psoriasis patients who developed heavy metal poisoning due to CFR usage, admitted to Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital from January 2011 to October 2023. Our analysis identified 44 cases of mercury poisoning, 17 of lead

Background Organic arsenic compounds can cause cerebellar ataxia, but the neurological profile of chronic inorganic arsenic exposure remains unclear. In Toroku, Japan, a historically exposed community, many residents report dizziness, yet it is unknown whether chronic inorganic arsenic exposure is associated with cerebellar dysfunction. We focused on upper limb ataxia as an accessible and quantifiable manifestation of cerebellar function in this setting. Methods We conducted a retrospective pilot study of residents who had lived within 1,000 meters of the Toroku mine roaster before 1962 and we
