Arthropod-Related Zoonotic Sepsis Caused by Capnocytophaga Canimorsus.

Loxosceles spp. bites can occasionally lead to systemic loxoscelism, including hemolysis and severe systemic illness. Secondary bacterial infections after spider bites are rarely reported and usually limited to skin commensals. We describe a patient with violin spider (Loxosceles rufescens) bite complicated by Capnocytophaga canimorsus sepsis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen classically linked to dog and cat bites. Blood cultures confirmed the infection, although subsequent non-viability of the isolate precluded antimicrobial susceptibility testing and genomic characterization. This case highlig

Arthropod ectoparasites of synanthropic rodents in northern-central Italy.

Synanthropic rodents, due to their close contact with humans, have always been a concern because of their substantial impact on both the economy and public health. This study aims to investigate the presence of ectoparasites in rodents captured during pest control campaigns in various Italian provinces (Bologna, Forlì-Cesena, Rimini, Ravenna, Arezzo) in northern-central Italy. We examined a total of 140 carcasses of brown rats (Rattus norvegicus - 81 samples), black rats (Rattus rattus - 49 samples) and house mice (Mus musculus - 10 samples). Skin samples were collected, digested in sodium hyd

Arthropod adiponectin receptor-like proteins and microbial persistence.

Arthropod-borne diseases, caused by diverse pathogens, are global public health threats. Recent studies show that adiponectin receptor-like proteins in vectors such as Anopheles gambiae, Aedes aegypti, and Ixodes scapularis influence transmission of diseases such as malaria, Zika virus, and Lyme disease. These receptors could be novel targets for controlling vector-borne diseases.

Arthropod-borne encephalitis: an overview for the clinician and emerging considerations.

The rapid spread of arboviral infections in recent years has continually established arthropod-borne encephalitis to be a pressing global health concern. Causing a wide range of clinical presentations ranging from asymptomatic infection to fulminant neurological disease, the hallmark features of arboviral infection are important to clinically recognise. Arboviral infections may cause severe neurological presentations such as meningoencephalitis, epilepsy, acute flaccid paralysis and stroke. While the pathogenesis of arboviral infections is still being investigated, shared neuroanatomical pathw

A Novel Arthropod Host of Brucellosis in the Arid Steppe Ecosystem.

Brucellosis is a severe public health problem in the Inner Mongolia regions of China. The recent prevalence of brucellosis outbreaks may be attributed to an increase in the activity of ticks and other air-borne vectors. Dermacentor nuttalli (D. nuttalli) is a native tick species of Inner Mongolia; similar to other tick species, D. nuttalli carries a variety of pathogens that can be transmitted to a wide range of animals. In this study, we have investigated the potential of D. nuttalli in transmitting brucellosis. From 2015 to 2019, 2,256 ticks were collected from 23 different pastoral areas of

History of arthropod-borne virus infections in French Polynesia.

In French Polynesia, arthropod-borne diseases are major public health problems. From the mid-1940s, the four serotypes of dengue virus (DENV-1 to -4) have caused 15 epidemics of variable severity. In 2013, for the first time, a sustained co-circulation of two different DENV serotypes (DENV-1 and -3) was reported. The same year, Zika virus (ZIKV) caused the largest outbreak ever recorded at that time. Severe neurologic complications in adults, including Guillain-Barré syndrome and central nervous system malformations in newborns and foeteuses, such as microcephaly, were reported, and a causal l

[2013 update about arthropod envenomations in French Guyana].

French Guiana, by its geographical situation, its climate and its biodiversity, is often called "the green hell". Indeed, this French department of America shelters a wildlife rich, abundant among which many species of arthropods, some of which are responsible for envenomations. These accidents consist of scorpion's or hymenoptera's stings or spider's bites. The associated clinical aspect is variable, from simple pain to circulatory collapse, or lung oedema. However, symptomatology is generally mild; four deaths associated to arthropod envenomations have been reported in the past 25 years. Thi

Transmission dynamics of Borrelia turicatae from the arthropod vector.

BACKGROUND: With the global distribution, morbidity, and mortality associated with tick and louse-borne relapsing fever spirochetes, it is important to understand the dynamics of vector colonization by the bacteria and transmission to the host. Tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes are blood-borne pathogens transmitted through the saliva of soft ticks, yet little is known about the transmission capability of these pathogens during the relatively short bloodmeal. This study was therefore initiated to understand the transmission dynamics of the relapsing fever spirochete Borrelia turicatae from

Bartonella henselae and the potential for arthropod vector-borne transmission.

INTRODUCTION: Bartonella henselae, the causative agent of the illness referred to as cat scratch disease, is a common infection, particularly in children, and clinicians need to be aware of its potential transmission to humans by arthropod vectors such as fleas and ticks in addition to animal bites and scratches. The absence of a vertebrate bite or scratch does not preclude infection with B. henselae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature regarding arthropod transmission of B. henselae was reviewed. RESULTS: B. henselae appears to be transmitted among cats and dogs in vivo exclusively by arthrop

Emerging arthropod-borne diseases of companion animals in Europe.

Vector-borne diseases are caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses transmitted by the bite of hematophagous arthropods (mainly ticks and mosquitoes). The past few years have seen the emergence of new diseases, or re-emergence of existing ones, usually with changes in their epidemiology (i.e. geographical distribution, prevalence, and pathogenicity). The frequency of some vector-borne diseases of pets is increasing in Europe, i.e. canine babesiosis, granulocytic anaplasmosis, canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, thrombocytic anaplasmosis, and leishmaniosis. Except for the last, these diseases are tra

A multiplexed TaqMan assay for the detection of arthropod-borne flaviviruses.

Arboviruses in the genus Flavivirus are major causes of human disease worldwide, and yet they are widely under reported. This is partially due to the classical methods of detection, using virologic or immunologic techniques, which typically lack sensitivity and specificity or require biological containment facilities in order to manipulate infectious cultures. Molecular detection assays based on broadly reactive (degenerate) primers also tend to have differential and lower sensitivity for many flaviviruses. In this study, an assay was designed to test for many flaviviruses using species-specif

[Human diffusion of arthropod disease vectors throughout the world].

The present distribution of animals and plants throughout the world is the result of an evolutionary process involving tectonic, climatic and biotic factors. Humans, since their appearance, have contributed to the spreading of many species including disease vectors and pests. When humans left their native African home, they brought with them ectoparasites such as lice and acarids. During the neolithic era, humans were leading domesticated animals which carried their own parasites into new areas. Dwelling commensals, flea, bugs, triatomids, flies, and cockroaches followed human migrations. In t

Helminth and arthropod parasites of indigenous goats in the northern Transvaal.

Helminth and arthropod parasites of 60 female indigenous goats of three age groups on a farm in the northern Transvaal were collected, identified and counted. Anoplocephalid tapeworms were present in the two younger groups of goats, while larvae of Taenia hydatigena were recovered from all three groups. Eight species and two genera of nematodes were found in the youngest goats, five species and three genera in the middle group and six species and two genera in the oldest goats. Strongyloides papillosus was the most numerous and most prevalent nematode in the youngest goats, while Haemonchus co

Epidemiology and control of malaria and other arthropod-borne diseases.

Malaria and other arthropod born diseases remain a serious public health problem affecting the lives and health of certain social groups when the two basic strategies to control fail due to: (1) the lack of effective chemoprophylaxis/chemotherapy or the rapid development of drug resistance of the infectious agents and (2) the ineffectiveness of pesticides or the arthropod vectors develop resistance to them. These situations enhances the need for the design and implementation of other alternatives for sustainable health programmes. The application of the epidemiological methods is essential not

Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti II. Arthropod vector studies.

The present vector studies show that the biting midge, Culicoides furens, serves as an intermediate host for Mansonella ozzardi in Haiti. A total of 3,430 C. furens were collected as they engorged on infected individuals. Under the maintenance conditions described herein, the microfilaria required 9 days to reach the infective stage. Approximately 43% of the midges survived, and from these 1,128 infective stage larvae were collected. This represents an overall infection rate of 0.76 larva per midge. Typically, there was a directly proportional relationship between the infection rate in midges
