Seasonal variation of Mastophorus muris (Nematoda: Spirurida) in the water vole Arvicola amphibius from southern Sweden.

This study focused on the spirurid nematode Mastophorus muris in water voles (Arvicola amphibius) trapped in three regions in southern Sweden during spring and fall 2013. The collection of water voles formed part of a larger project (EMIRO) on the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis in rodents. The voles' stomach contents were examined for the presence of M. muris. Prevalence, mean abundance and mean intensity of infection were calculated. A generalized linear model model was used to examine the effects of sex, functional group, season and region on the number of M. muris individuals in each v

[The influence of Taenia taeniaeformis larval infection on morphometrical parameters of muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)].

An investigation aimed to check the influence of Taenia taeniaeformis larvae on morphometrical parameters of muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) was carried. A total of 30 animals were hunted down in upper Vistula river basin in south Poland, then measured, weighed and dissected. Statistical comparison were done using U Mann-Whitney test. T. taeniaeformis larvae--cysticercus fasciolaris was found in the liver of 24 muskrats (80%). Significant differences between infected and non infected animals are reported, as regards their body mass, total length, abdomen circumference (p < 0.01) and also in body

Sex differences in spontaneous locomotor activity and rotational behavior in meadow voles.

Sex differences in rotational behavior have been most clearly established in laboratory rats with females exhibiting a turning bias. Here, using an automated open-field apparatus, locomotor activity and spontaneous rotational behavior were examined in diurnally crepuscularly active reproductive male and female meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). Meadow voles, being induced ovulators, permitted analysis of females in constant behavioral estrous. Males displayed significantly greater levels of activity and also significantly greater levels of clockwise but not counterclockwise rotational beh

Daylength influences pelage and plasma prolactin concentrations but not reproduction in the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster.

Short daylengths did not affect testes weight or spermatogenic index in male voles or uterine weight in female voles. Short daylengths did stimulate the growth of a winter pelage in both sexes; short-day voles had longer underhairs and guard hairs and a thicker, more dense pelage than did long-day voles. Plasma prolactin concentrations were five times higher in long-day than in short-day females and 25% higher in long-day males than in short-day males. The effect of short daylength on pelage was prevented by pinealectomy. We suggest that the growth of a winter coat is an obligate adaptation fo

Prions in Muscles of Cervids with Chronic Wasting Disease, Norway.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emerging prion disease in Nordic countries and has been detected in reindeer, moose, and red deer since 2016. CWD sporadically detected in moose and red deer in 3 Nordic countries demonstrated pathologic and strain characteristics different from CWD in reindeer, including an unexpected lack of prions outside the central nervous system as measured by standard diagnostic tests. Using protein misfolding cyclic amplification, we detected prions in the lymphoreticular system of moose and red deer with CWD in Norway and, remarkably, in muscles of both of those spe

Organization of the Perioral Representation of the Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Prairie Voles (Microtus ochrogaster).

INTRODUCTION: Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) are one of the few mammalian species that are monogamous and engage in the biparental rearing of their offspring. Biparental care impacts the quantity and quality of care the offspring receives. The increased attention by the father may translate to heightened tactile contact the offspring receives through licking and grooming. METHODS: In the current study, we used electrophysiological multiunit techniques to define the organization of the perioral representation in the primary somatosensory area (S1) of prairie voles. Functional representat

Bilateral Asymmetry in Sperm Quality of Bank Voles: Fluctuating, Huge, and Warranting Attention.

Despite its potential significance for male fertility, bilateral testicular asymmetry in vertebrates remains poorly understood. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA), which serves as an indicator of stochastic developmental variation, constitutes a crucial yet frequently overlooked aspect of phenotypic variability. Although FA is commonly examined in morphological traits, its measurement in functional testicular traits has not been previously conducted due to methodological constraints. We analyzed FA in epididymal sperm motility (curvilinear velocity, VCL) and sperm concentration (SEC) in reproductively

Photoperiod-regulated mitophagy in the germ cells of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii).

Photoperiod is a pivotal factor in affecting testicular function and spermatogenesis in seasonal-breeding animals. Mitophagy is essential for spermatogenesis, but its association with seasonal photoperiods has not been studied extensively. To explore this, we exposed male Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii) to long-photoperiod (LP, 16 h/day) and short-photoperiod (SP, 8 h/day) conditions from their embryonic stages. Our results indicated that testis weight, volume, and relative testes weight were all significantly increased in LP compared to SP. Additionally, blood testosterone levels were

Lateral septum DREADD activation alters male prairie vole prosocial and antisocial behaviors, not partner preferences.

Although much has been written on the topic of social behavior, many terms referring to different aspects of social behavior have become inappropriately conflated and the specific mechanisms governing them remains unclear. It is therefore critical that we disentangle the prosocial and antisocial elements associated with different forms of social behavior to fully understand the social brain. The lateral septum (LS) mediates social behaviors, emotional processes, and stress responses necessary for individuals to navigate day-to-day social interactions. The LS is particularly important in genera

Antioxidant response to severe hypoxia in Brandt's vole Lasiopodomys brandtii.

The antioxidant defense system is essential for animals to cope with homeostasis disruption and overcome oxidative stress caused by adverse environmental conditions such as hypoxia. However, our understanding of how this system works in subterranean rodents remains limited. In this study, Brandt's vole Lasiopodomys brandtii was exposed to normoxia (21% O2 ) or hypoxia (mild or severe hypoxia: 10% or 5% O2 ) for 6 h. Changes in key enzymes of the classic enzymatic antioxidant system at both mRNA and enzyme activity levels, and tissue antioxidant levels of the low-molecular-weight antioxidant sy

Fatal infection with Versteria sp. in a muskrat, with implications for human health.

The Taeniidae tapeworms are a family of helminths that have a similar life cycle, with intermediate hosts developing characteristic cysts in visceral organs. We describe here a case in Pennsylvania, USA, of fatal Versteria infection in a muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), which, to our knowledge, has not been reported to develop disease associated with infection. Postmortem examination revealed widespread tissue loss and replacement by solid-bodied cestode larvae with minimal adjacent inflammation in many visceral organs, most severe in the lungs, liver, and brain. Key morphologic features via hist

Seasonal expressions of oxytocin and oxytocin receptor in epididymis of the male muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus).

Oxytocin (OT) is presented in the male reproductive tract and has various physiological functions, such as stimulating contraction of the reproductive tract and aiding sperm transport. In this study we investigated seasonal expressions of OT and oxytocin receptor (OTR) in the epididymis of the muskrat during the breeding and non-breeding seasons. Morphologically, the weight and length of epididymis in the breeding season were significantly higher than those in the non-breeding season. In the breeding season, the lumen diameter and epithelial thickness of epididymis increased significantly, and

Seasonal changes in body mass, serum leptin levels and hypothalamic neuropeptide gene expression in male Eothenomys olitor.

The present study examined seasonal changes in body mass and energy metabolism in the Chaotung vole (Eothenomys olitor) and the physiological mechanisms underpinning these changes. Seasonal changes in the following parameters were measured in male E. olitor, body mass, food intake, thermogenesis, enzyme activity, masses of tissues and organs, hormone concentrations and expression of hypothalamic arcuate nucleus energy balance genes including neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related protein (AgRP), pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART). Spermiogenesis and spermatozoon of the liver fluke Mediogonimus jourdanei (Microphalloidea: Prosthogonimidae), a parasite of Myodes glareolus (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Spermatological characters of the liver fluke Mediogonimus jourdanei Mas-Coma et Rocamora, 1978 were studied by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Spermiogenesis begins with the formation of the differentiation zone containing two centrioles associated with striated rootlets and an intercentriolar body. These two centrioles originate two free flagella that undergo a 90 degrees rotation before fusing with the median cytoplasmic process. Both nuclear and mitochondrial migrations toward the median cytoplasmic process occur before the proximodistal fusion of flagella. Finally,

[Interrelationship between the level of chromosomal aberrations and demographic parameters].

The interrelationship between the level of chromosomal abnormalities and demographic parameters has been studied using individuals from the natural population of bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) from a locality within the Middle Ural, of the southern taiga subzone (57 degrees 15' N, 58 degrees 44' E). Routine methods of cytogenetic analysis are applied to examination of variability in the frequency of structural chromosomal aberrations, gaps and changes in number of chromosomes in bank voles' bone marrow cells. Influence of demographic parameters, namely population density, age, sex, and re

Babesia microti: prevalence in wild rodents and Ixodes ricinus ticks from the Mazury Lakes District of North-Eastern Poland.

Infections of Babesia microti (Apicomplexa, Piroplasmida), a common erythroparasitic protozoon of Holarctic rodents, are not widely acknowledged in Poland. The presence of this parasite in various species of wild rodents has been well documented throughout the northern temperate zone of North America, Europe, and Eurasia. However, human babesiosis attributable to infection with B. microti has been reported only from the north-eastern and upper midwestern United States and Japan. We recently carried out an epizootiological survey investigating the prevalence of B. microti both in the tick Ixode

Persistence of bromadiolone anticoagulant rodenticide in Arvicola terrestris populations after field control.

This paper documents the exposure pattern of a population of small mammals to bromadiolone over time in a field-scale follow up. This is the first assessment of the field-scale effect of such control operation on the availability of bromadiolone-exposed A. terrestris prey to nontarget predator species. It indicates that an important risk of poisoning of nontarget species does exist during large-scale field control operations with bromadiolone, which is contradictory to results obtained from laboratory experiments in the early 1980s and consistent with the secondary poisoning hazards due to rep
