The present study analyzed gastrointestinal helminth communities in 265 wild pigeons (Columba livia) living in the municipalities of São Paulo and Tatuí, state of São Paulo, Brazil, over a one-year period. The birds were caught next to grain storage warehouses and were necropsied. A total of 790 parasites comprising one nematode species and one cestode genus were recovered from 110 pigeons, thus yielding an overall prevalence of 41.5%, mean intensity of infection of 7.2 ± 1.6 (range 1-144) and discrepancy index of 0.855. Only 15 pigeons (5.7%) presented mixed infection. The helminths isolated

In order to gain a better etiological and epidemiological knowledge of the parasitic diseases of local breed chickens reared in extensive (traditional) mode, a study was carried out in the Oran region during the periods from February 2020 to April 2020. Ten chickens were examined by the helminthologic autopsy method to identify parasitic helminths in the digestive tract. Four species of helminths have been identified: two species of nematodes: Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum and two species of cestodes: Raillietina cesticillus and Raillietina tetragona. Six chickens were carriers of t

A survey was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites from various species of birds housed in a zoological garden in Egypt. A total of 72 faecal samples were collected randomly from studied birds. It was discovered that 63.9% were infected with at least one intestinal parasites, with 27.8% positive for helminths and 36.1% positive with protozoa. Coprological analysis revealed that the fecal samples were infected with different parasite species including 6 nematode eggs or larvae namely Ascaridia spp. (4.1%), Heterakis spp. (8.3%), Capillaria spp. (5.6%), Contracaecum sp

The Ascaris roundworms (Ascaridida: Nematoda), one of the commonest soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), can cause ascariasis with significant socioeconomic and public health impact. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Ascaris ovis, a representative of this genus from the sheep in Southwest China was determined using Illumina sequencing technology. The assembled genome was 14,205 bp in size and encoded 36 genes, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that A. ovis grouped with the congeneric Ascaris lumbricoides o

The recent study by Devi et al. provided compelling ultrastructural and histological evidence of severe damage in Ascaridia galli following exposure to Meyna laxiflora seed extract, supporting its anthelmintic potential. However, the interpretation of such morphological alterations warrants further consideration. Similar cuticular and internal lesions have been reported in parasites exposed to chemically unrelated compounds with distinct molecular targets, suggesting that comparable structural phenotypes may represent convergent pathological endpoints rather than mechanistic signatures. Parasitic infections are frequent in cosmopolitan feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica) that live in cities, but little is known about the effects of parasites in urban feral pigeon populations. A survey was conducted to evaluate the occurrence of endoparasites and the risk factors of feral pigeons in the city of Loja in southern Ecuador between August and October 2019. A total of 166 fecal samples and 80 peripheral blood smears were collected and examined by the McMaster flotation method and Giemsa staining, respectively. The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites was 79.51% (132/166). Pa

Growth rates, measures of ascarid burden, and the levels of anteroventral pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis at slaughter were determined for 352 hogs born between March 8 and March 28, 1987 on 15 farms located in Prince Edward Island. Regression analyses were used to determine associations between average daily gain (ADG) and independent variables controlling for sex, farm, and litters nested within farm. The regression model accounted for 75.4% of the variation in ADG. The number of intestinal ascarids at slaughter did not affect ADG. However, the "life-time burden" (a composite measure based o

1. Selected health and welfare variables of laying hens from 79 flocks kept in alternative husbandry systems were assessed at the end of lay. 2. Investigations were carried out on 100 hens per flock at the slaughter line and recorded as part of a novel scoring system. In addition, post-mortem investigations as well as parasitological examinations were conducted on 10 birds from each flock. 3. Birds with access to free range had better plumage than birds kept in barn systems. Housing in aviaries was associated with a higher prevalence of foot pad lesions and keel bone deformations. In addition,

Anisakiasis/anisakidosis caused by anisakid nematodes is an emerging infectious disease that can cause a wide range of clinical syndromes and are difficult to diagnose and treat in humans. In spite of their significance as pathogens, the systematics, genetics, epidemiology and biology of these parasites remain poorly understood. In the present study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial (mt) genome of Pseudoterranova azarasi, which is one of the most important zoonotic anisakid parasites. The circular mt genome is 13,954 bp in size and encodes of 36 genes, including 12 protein-coding, 2 rib

The present study was undertaken to find out the safety levels of fenbendazole in common peafowl. This bird, raised on aviaries and zoos, can be severely parasitized with Ascaridia galli (enteric worms) and Syngamus trachea (gapeworm) along with other parasitic worms. Fenbendazole is a highly effective benzimidazole-class anthelmintic in animals. The objective of this work was to provide target animal safety data in young peafowl and to demonstrate reproductive safety in adult birds. During the experimental study, diets containing fenbendazole at 0, 100, 200 and 300 ppm were fed for 21 days (t

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris sprenti, a species which occurs in the stomach of opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in Louisiana, was determined. The larva in the egg developed to the infective stage after eggs from the feces of infected animals were in culture about 30 days. When eggs containing infective larvae were fed to mice, the larvae hatched, penetrated the intestinal mucosa, migrated through the liver and lungs, and eventually reached the skeletal muscles where they became encapsulated. Larvae were also found encapsulated in the skeletal muscles of rats, gerbils, hamsters, monkeys, an
