Baylisascaris procyonis Roundworm Infection in Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Washington, USA, 2022.

We describe a case of Baylisascaris procyonis roundworm infection in a child in Washington, USA, with autism spectrum disorder. Environmental assessment confirmed nearby raccoon habitation and B. procyonis eggs. B. procyonis infections should be considered a potential cause of human eosinophilic meningitis, particularly among young children and persons with developmental delays.

Cryptosporidium sp. skunk genotype in wild raccoons (Procyon lotor) naturally infected with Baylisascaris procyonis from Central Germany.

Cryptosporidium spp. are apicomplexan parasites of public health concern. They are one of the main causes of intestinal diseases in humans and animals. Contaminated water is among the main sources of infection for humans and mammals. Raccoons are an introduced species in Germany. They are anthropogenic adapters with a natural affinity for water bodies. We collected samples from wild raccoons in the Federal States of Saxony and Thuringia, Central Germany. Through molecular genotyping, we found Cryptosporidium sp. skunk genotype in one raccoon from Saxony (1/24) and in one animal from Thuringia

Epidemiology of Sulcascaris sulcata (Nematoda: Anisakidae) ulcerous gastritis in the Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

Sulcascaris sulcata Rudolphi 1819 is a gastric nematode parasite of sea turtles. Here, we report the occurrence and describe for the first time the pathological changes caused by S. sulcata in the Mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) stranded along the Tyrrhenian coast and northern Adriatic coast of Italy. Prevalence of infection was significantly higher in loggerhead sea turtles from the Adriatic Sea. Both prevalence and abundance of infection showed an increasing trend along with host age classes from both geographical localities. Nevertheless, while many small loggerhead se

Occurrence of anisakid parasites in marine fishes and whales off New Caledonia.

Anisakid nematodes are the most infamous parasites occurring in seafood with ability to infect humans. In the present study, the infective stages of five anisakid larval types, including Anisakis types I and III, Terranova types I and II and Contracaecum larval type, as well as adult Anisakis paggiae are reported from 16 host species from New Caledonian waters. The specific identity of the larval types was investigated using ITS sequence data. Anisakis larval types I and III were identified as Anisakis typica and Anisakis brevispiculata, respectively, based on identical ITS sequences. However,

Sub-optimal efficacy of ivermectin against Parascaris equorum in foals on three Thoroughbred stud farms in the Manawatu region of New Zealand.

AIM: To ascertain whether resistance was present in Parascaris equorum to the macrocyclic lactone anthelmintic ivermectin, using faecal egg count reduction tests. METHODS: Thirty-nine foals aged between 11 and 28 weeks on three Thoroughbred stud farms (Farms A; n=20, B; n=5 and C; n=14) were treated with ivermectin (Day 0) and faecal egg counts (FEC) were monitored before and for 21 (Farms A and B) or 14 (Farm C) days after treatment. On Farms A and B, the foals were treated with a macrocyclic lactone/benzimidazole/praziquantel combination on Day 21 and FEC assessed on Day 35. The three farms

Infection status of Baylisascaris transfuga in captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) from three bile farms in South Korea, with molecular analyses.

Bears harbor various endoparasites that pose risks to humans and other animals. However, information on parasitic infections in Asiatic black bears in South Korea (Korea) is limited, and potential hazards still exist because of the close contact between bears and humans on bile farms. The present study was conducted to assess the gastrointestinal parasite infection status in captive Asiatic black bears (Ursus thibetanus) at bile farms in Korea. Additionally, we aimed to characterize the molecular aspects of Baylisascaris transfuga (Nematoda: Ascarididae), the sole species investigated througho

Transcriptional responses in Parascaris univalens after in vitro exposure to ivermectin, pyrantel citrate and thiabendazole.

BACKGROUND: Parascaris univalens is a pathogenic parasite of foals and yearlings worldwide. In recent years, Parascaris spp. worms have developed resistance to several of the commonly used anthelmintics, though currently the mechanisms behind this development are unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the transcriptional responses in adult P. univalens worms after in vitro exposure to different concentrations of three anthelmintic drugs, focusing on drug targets and drug metabolising pathways. METHODS: Adult worms were collected from the intestines of two foals at slaughter. The fo

Reduced efficacy of ivermectin and moxidectin against Parascaris spp. in foals from Argentina.

Macrocyclic lactones are the most widely used drugs for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of horses in Argentina. Ivermectin and moxidectin are used as broad spectrum anthelmintics and although there are several international reports on the resistance of Parascaris spp., the resistance status of the local nematode population is largely unknow. This report informs a case of suboptimal efficacy to both drugs to control Parascaris spp in foals in central Argentina. In February 2018, routine fecal parasite egg counts showed a moderate-high number of Parascaris spp eggs (mean = 680 eggs per

Comparative analyses of coproscopical techniques to diagnose enteroparasites in a group of captive Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

Captive animals commonly have infections by direct life cycle parasites, since they are easily transmitted between individuals. However, diagnosing these infections in the laboratory is challenging due to the wide variety of parasite, their life stages and to the variety of available diagnose techniques, being difficult to choose the best one. The present study sampled a group of captive Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus) from São Paulo Zoological Park Foundation, São Paulo, Brazil, to test and compare different coproscopical techniques commonly applied in veterinarian clinical analysis laborator

Atypical case of recurrent otitis with polyp formation in the ear canal associated with lagochilascariasis in a domestic feline in Brazil.

Lagochilascariasis is a neglected zoonosis that affects domestic and wild mammals, including humans, and can form nodules, especially on the neck. Although emerging, it is considered a rare disease in the Americas and, therefore, the objective was to report an atypical case of recurrent otitis with the formation of polyps in the ear canal in a domestic feline associated with lagochilascariasis in Brazil. A cat had a purulent exudate in one of her ears and responded poorly to treatments. During an otoendoscopy procedure, a polyp and nematodes were removed and sent for histopathological and para

A diverse microbial community and common core microbiota associated with the gonad of female Parascaris spp.

The microbiome plays an important role in health, where changes in microbiota composition can have significant downstream effects within the host, and host-microbiota relationships can be exploited to affect health outcomes. Parasitic helminths affect animals globally, but an exploration of their microbiota has been limited, despite the development of anti-Wolbachia drugs to help control infections with some filarial nematodes. The equine ascarids, Parascaris spp., are considered the most pathogenic nematodes affecting juvenile horses and are also the only ascarid parasite to have developed wi

Fenbendazole resistance in Heterakis gallinarum, the vector of Histomonas meleagridis, on a broiler breeder farm in South Carolina.

Parasites are highly prevalent in poultry; thus, the management of parasites is a key component in the profitable production of poultry. The most common nematode parasite of poultry, Heterakis gallinarum, typically causes no direct pathology but is the vector of Histomonas meleagridis, a highly pathogenic protozoan parasite that causes blackhead disease. There are no approved treatments for H. meleagridis, making control reliant on controlling the helminth vector. In the United States, the benzimidazole anthelmintic fenbendazole (FBZ) is the only approved treatment for H. gallinarum. We were c
