Menstrual dysfunction and body weight dissatisfaction among Finnish young athletes and non-athletes.

To determine the prevalence of menstrual dysfunction (MD; ie, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea) and attitudes toward body weight among athletes and non-athletes, we studied a cohort of athletes and non-athletes, in adolescence (14-16 years) and subsequently in young adulthood (18-20 years). We further studied the differences between athletes reporting MD and eumenorrheic athletes at both time periods and identified physical and behavioral characteristics that might predict MD in young adulthood. Data were collected using questionnaires, accelerometers, and a pre-participation screening. In adolesc

Distal Biceps Tendon Repair in Competitive Strength Athletes: A Retrospective Series of 183 Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Elbow injuries are common among strength athletes, particularly distal biceps tendon ruptures. These injuries can significantly affect athletes' performance and require effective treatment strategies to ensure optimal recovery and return to sport. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate the patient-reported outcomes, return-to-sport rate, and postoperative strength of competitive strength athletes who underwent distal biceps tendon repair. It was hypothesized that patients would show excellent patient-reported outcomes on validated questi

Athletes' relationships to training: Validation of an assessment tool across female and male athletes.

OBJECTIVE: Reasons for exercise training are often adaptive (e.g., athletic achievement), but for some athletes, their relationship with training can include a maladaptive desire for weight loss, which can increase risk for eating-disorder pathology. Prior validation of the Athletes' Relationships to Training scale (ART) supported its validity among female athletes. The current study extended this work to compare psychometric properties of the ART among female and male athletes; we expected the measure to perform similarly across sexes. METHODS: We conducted confirmatory factor analyses (CFA)

Lost in research translation: Female athletes are not male athletes, especially at the hip.

Altered shape of the proximal femur (cam morphology) or acetabulum (pincer morphology) is indicative of femoroacetabular impingement, which can result in hip pain and osteoarthritis of the hip. As mechanical load during growth affects the resulting bone shape, there is strong evidence in males that cam morphology develops during skeletal growth while physes are open, rather than as an adaptation after growth plates are closed (skeletal maturity). This adaptation is particularly evident in athletes who participate at elite levels prior to skeletal maturity. The research providing this evidence,

Brain Metabolite Levels in Sedentary Women and Non-contact Athletes Differ From Contact Athletes.

White matter tracts are known to be susceptible to injury following concussion. The objective of this study was to determine whether contact play in sport could alter white matter metabolite levels in female varsity athletes independent of changes induced by long-term exercise. Metabolite levels were measured by single voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) in the prefrontal white matter at the beginning (In-Season) and end (Off-Season) of season in contact (N = 54, rugby players) and non-contact (N = 23, swimmers and rowers) varsity athletes. Sedentary women (N = 23) were scanned

The differentiation of the competitive athlete with physiologic cardiac remodeling from the athlete with cardiomyopathy.

There are currently 5 million active high school, collegiate, professional, and master athletes in the United States. Regular intense exercise by these athletes can promote structural, electrical and functional remodeling of the heart, which is termed the "athlete's heart." In addition, regular intense exercise can lead to pathological adaptions that promote or worsen cardiac disease. Many of the athletes in the United States seek medical care. Consequently, physicians must be aware of the normal cardiac anatomy and physiology of the athlete, the differentiation of the normal athlete heart fro

Athletic identity affects prevalence and disclosure of emotional abuse in Finnish athletes.

The present study offers novel insight into the topic of experienced and observed emotional abuse by researching factors that affect athletes' responses to emotional abuse by coaches. The research aimed to explore three main questions: (1) whether athletic identity was associated with the prevalence of emotionally abusive coaching practices, and (2) disclosure of emotional abuse, and (3) whether demographic variations existed in the frequency of emotional abuse, athletic identity, and disclosure of the abuse. Study participants who filled in an anonymous digital survey consisted of athletes fr

Athlete Heart in Children and Young Athletes. Echocardiographic Findings in 331 Cases.

The changes of the athlete's heart are not well defined and characterized in children. We aimed to describe the morphological changes of the heart related to sport in young athletes. We evaluated a group of 331 young athletes under 18 years (mean 11.9 ± 3.2) who practice tennis: 58 (16.52%), football: 118 (33.62%), basketball: 16 (4.56%), athletics: 40 (11.4%), and swimming: 99 (28.21%). Type of sport, years of practice, and duration of the training were collected. All children underwent echocardiography with the following M-mode parameters: left atrium diameter (LAD), interventricular septum

(Un)imaginable (Para-)athletes: A Discourse Analysis of Athletics Websites in Canada.

This Foucauldian discourse analysis engages DePauw's theory of disability and visibility to examine the construction of para-athletes within the websites of Canada's "fully integrated" athletics sport system. The authors found that para-athletes remain largely unimaginable within most athletics websites. When present, para-athletes are often only imagined as marginal participants, or marginalized through medical and charitable discourses. The authors offer examples of para-athletes being reimagined primarily as athletes, and some examples where (para-)athletics was reimagined by identifying an

Ambulatory electrocardiographic findings in top athletes, athletic students and control subjects.

Aim of the present study was to evaluate 24 h electrocardiographic recording in 30 top athletes, 30 athletic students and 30 sedentary control subjects. Each group consisted of 15 males and 15 females and were matched for age (about 24 years). Training was not allowed during the recording. Top athletes had the lowest diurnal and nocturnal heart rate, but the difference between top athletes and athletic students was far less pronounced than between athletic students and controls. This may indicate that bradycardia reaches a lower limit with moderate degrees of training. Atrioventricular (AV) bl

Meta-analysis of the effects of plyometric training on athletic performance in handball athletes.

In this study, the impact of Plyometric Training (PT) on handball players' performance was explored. Databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and EBSCOhost were systematically searched, using mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of the calculation result indicators as effect sizes. 11 studies involving 302 subjects were included. Results showed that PT was correlated with improved jumping ability: countermovement jump (MD = 4.14, P < 0.00001) and squat jump (MD = 3.83, P < 0.00001). In change-of-direction ability, T-half performance improved (MD=-0.55, P < 0.0001). As for the

Myostatin serum levels depends on age and diet in athletic and no athletic dogs.

Myostatin is a growth factor related to muscular mass atrophy via mTOR pathway inhibition. Mutations in this gene have been correlated with high muscular mass development in different species of mammals, including human and dogs. Different studies have shown that sport practice increases myostatin gene expression. Some of them were conducted in canine breeds selected for different sport practices, including mushing sports. In this study, body weight, muscular mass, and serum levels of myostatin were analysed in different canine breeds, selected, and not selected for sprint and middle-distance

Athlete's heart or heart disease in the athlete? Evaluation by cardiopulmonary exercise testing.

Routine or vigorous training, particularly in competitive and elite athletes practicing dynamic sports, leads to a constellation of structural and functional cardiovascular adaptations, facilitating an increased capacity to deliver oxygen to the working muscles during sustained physical exertion. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is the most accurate and objective method to assess performance in athletes. Although still underutilized, it provides a window into the unique cardiovascular response to exercise in athletes, integrating parameters obtained by the traditional exercise test with breath

Modelling childbirth: comparing athlete and non-athlete pelvic floor mechanics.

There is preliminary evidence that athletes involved in high-intensity sports for sustained periods have a higher probability of experiencing a prolonged second stage of labour compared to non-athletes. The mechanisms responsible for these differences are not clear, although it is postulated that muscle hypertrophy and increased muscle tone in athletes may contribute to difficulties in vaginal delivery. In order to test these hypotheses, we have constructed individual-specific finite element models of the female pelvic floor (one athlete and one non-athlete) and the fetal head to simulate vagi
