Toxicity Characterisation of Gambierdiscus Species from the Canary Islands.

In the last decade, several outbreaks of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) have been reported in the Canary Islands (central northeast Atlantic Ocean), confirming ciguatera as an emerging alimentary risk in this region. Five Gambierdiscus species, G. australes, G. excentricus, G. silvae, G. carolinianus and G. caribaeus, have been detected in macrophytes from this area and are known to produce the ciguatoxins (CTXs) that cause CFP. A characterization of the toxicity of these species is the first step in identifying locations in the Canary Islands at risk of CFP. Therefore, in this study the toxic

Macrogeographic genetic variation in broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris).

Broad-snouted caiman's (Caiman latirostris) geographic distribution comprises one of the widest latitudinal ranges among all crocodilians. In this study we analyzed the relationship between geographic distance (along the species latitudinal range) and genetic differentiation using DNA microsatellite loci developed for C. latirostris and Alligator mississippiensis. The results suggest that there is a consistent relationship between geographic distance and genetic differentiation; however, other biogeographical factors seem to be relevant. The Atlantic Chain (Serra do Mar) seems to be an effecti

Localization of an acromesomelic dysplasia on chromosome 9 by homozygosity mapping.

The acromesomelic dysplasias (AMDs) are a group of genetic disorders that primarily affect the middle and distal segments of the extremities. A form of AMD is present on the isolated island of St Helena in the South Atlantic, which has a population of approximately 5500 derived from a number of founder individuals. DNA from four affected individuals and 11 first-degree relatives in four related nuclear families segregating an AMD was collected for gene mapping studies. Six consecutive markers on chromosome 9, spanning an approximately 5 cM region, showed identical homozygosity in all affected

Modeling risks in marine protected areas: Mapping of habitats, biodiversity, and cultural ecosystem services in the southernmost atlantic coral reef.

Marine Protected Area (MPA) is a fundamental strategy for the maintenance of ocean ecological processes worldwide and, consequently, their associated ecosystem services. Nevertheless, the quality of the services provided by MPAs, including cultural services such as recreational activities, depends on the effective management of marine habitats and biodiversity. Here, we performed an ecosystemic assessment in reef environments within a subtropical MPA, modeling the potential risks for their habitats and their recreational activities. The Queimada Grande Island (QGI), southeastern Brazil, was us

The records from citizen science of an "endemic" agouti are not thoroughly evaluated nor examined.

OBJECTIVE: Citizen science supports conservation by contributing species occurrence data and promoting environmental education. However, the accuracy of these data remains a concern, particularly for endemic and poorly studied species. This study evaluates the spatial accuracy of citizen science records for the Roatán agouti (Dasyprocta ruatanica), an insular mammal endemic to the Bay Islands of Honduras. We specifically analysed geographic records sourced from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), mainly contributed through iNaturalist, to assess georeferencing quality and disc

Parasites of amberjacks from the archipelago of Madeira, Eastern Atlantic.

Amberjacks, Seriola spp., are a group of carangid fishes of economic importance for fisheries and aquaculture worldwide. A survey of the parasites of greater amberjack S. dumerili and almaco jack or longfin yellowtail S. rivoliana from the Madeira archipelago (including the Madeira and Selvagens Islands) was carried out. This work is the first parasitological study of these 2 species in the Eastern Atlantic. A total of 14 parasite taxa were detected in the 47 fish analysed: Allencotyla mcintoshi, Stephanostomum petimba, Rhadinorhynchus sp. and Caligus aesopus (in both Seriola spp.); Dionchus a

[West Nile virus: a new challenge?].

West Nile Virus (WNV), a member of the family Flaviviridae, was first isolated in 1937. Since the original isolation of the WNV outbreaks have occurred with increase in frequency of cases in humans and horses, apparent increase in severe human disease and high avian death rates. In 1999, 2000 and 2002 outbreaks of the WNV encephalitis were reported in horses, birds and humans from New York and Canada. Ornithophilic mosquitoes are the principal vectors of the WNV and birds of several species chiefly migrants appear to be the major introductory or amplifying host. The pattern of outbreaks in the

Sediment flux and stony coral health in the nearshore US Virgin Islands.

Human activities in tropical watersheds are increasing rates of terrestrial silt and clay deposition to nearshore environments and negatively impacting coral reef ecosystems. We sampled sediment flux across a range of coral reef environments in the US Virgin Islands, Caribbean Sea using standard sediment traps and evaluated the relationship of sediment particle size and quality (organic, carbonate, terrigenous) on coral health. We found high variability in rates of sediment deposition that corresponded temporally to storm and swell events. However, this was driven spatially by distinctions bet

Storm Surfing Fatalities.

OBJECTIVES: Tropical storms and hurricanes often produce ocean wave conditions that attract surfers. The risk for serious injury or death from "storm surfing" has not yet been described in the medical literature. This study aimed to quantify deaths attributable to storm surfing along the coasts of North America and the Caribbean islands. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of cases of surfing-related fatalities reported in the tropical cyclone reports of the National Hurricane Center from 1995 to 2020. Media reports were used to identify additional cases and, when available, to provide s

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of human dietary change in the Georgia Bight.

Measurement of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (delta 13C and delta 15N) in samples of human bone collagen (n = 93) from a temporal series of four prehistoric (early preagricultural, late preagricultural, early agricultural, late agricultural) and two historic (early contact, late contact) periods from the Georgia Bight, a continental embayment on the southeastern U.S. Atlantic coast, reveals a general temporal trend for less negative delta 13C values and less positive delta 15N values. This trend reflects a concomitant decrease in emphasis on marine resources and increased reliance

Locality matters: Variation in the reproductive cycle and population structure of subtropical sea urchins.

The life cycle of many Echinoidea species remains poorly understood despite research conducted in temperate and tropical-subtropical regions. Common species in the Central-Eastern Atlantic's shallow waters include Paracentrotus lividus, Arbacia lixula, and Sphaerechinus granularis. Nevertheless, significant gaps in understanding their life cycles persist. This study discusses the reproductive cycles of three sea urchin species in rocky coastal ecosystems around Gran Canaria Island (Spain) (27º45´N, 15º45´W) from June 2020 to May 2021. Morphological measurements reveal that test length increase

High prevalence of asthma symptoms in the Canary Islands: climatic influence?

The worldwide variation in asthma prevalence prompted us to carry out a study to assess the variability of asthma-related symptoms in young adults on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. We used the questionnaire used in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey with the addition of two questions on smoking and ancestors from the Canary Islands. In each island, this questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 5000 subjects aged 20-44 years. Of the 10,000 subjects, 9,506 (95.06%) were considered eligible. We obtained 7,132 (75.03%) responses. The prevalence of the different

UV-induced alterations in skin and lymphocytes during a one-week holiday in the Canary Islands in May.

The effect of solar exposure during a one-week sunbathing vacation in May at 29 degrees N latitude was investigated in 22 volunteers. The following end-points were measured before and after the holiday: skin reflectance at 507 nm, transmission of radiation from 289 nm to 448 nm through the epidermis, epidermal thickness, minimal erythema dose (MED), total white cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and lymphocyte subpopulation counts in blood, spontaneous DNA synthesis, DNA strand breaks and sister-chromatid exchange in lymphocytes, and the UVC tolerance of lymphocytes. There was a statistically signi

Prokaryotic communities from a lava tube cave in La Palma Island (Spain) are involved in the biogeochemical cycle of major elements.

Lava caves differ from karstic caves in their genesis and mineral composition. Subsurface microbiology of lava tube caves in Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, is largely unknown. We have focused the investigation in a representative lava tube cave, Fuente de la Canaria Cave, in La Palma Island, Spain, which presents different types of speleothems and colored microbial mats. Four samples collected in this cave were studied using DNA next-generation sequencing and field emission scanning electron microscopy for bacterial identification, functional profiling, and morph

Invasive Lionfish (Pterosis volitans) Pose Public Health Threats.

The lionfish, Pterosis volitans, a native of Indo-Pacific oceans, is a popular saltwater aquarium fish despite venomous spines on its fins. Lionfish were inadvertently introduced into the western Atlantic from Florida in the early 1990s and have overpopulated and dispersed widely into the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Initiatives to control lionfish populations were launched, including the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-sponsored "Lionfish as Food Campaign".2 Recently, scientists from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that lionfish caught off the

Phylogenomics reconciles molecular data with the rich fossil record on the origin of living turtles.

Although a consensus exists that all living turtles fall within either Pleurodira or Cryptodira clades, estimating when these lineages split is still under debate. Most molecular studies date the split in the Triassic Period, whereas a Jurassic age is unanimous among morphological studies. Each hypothesis implies different paleobiogeographical scenarios to explain early turtle evolution. Here we explored the rich turtle fossil record with the Fossilized Birth-Death (FBD) and the traditional node dating (ND) methods using complete mitochondrial genomes (147 taxa) and a set of nuclear orthologs

Schistosomiasis in the Republic of São Tomé and Principe: human studies.

The only schistosome species found in stool specimens in the local population of the republic of São Tomé is Schistosoma intercalatum. An initial survey of schoolchildren showed an overall prevalence of 10.9%, with some schools reaching 29%. No S. haematobium egg was found in 782 urine specimens from the local population, although some were seen in the urine of Angolan soldiers stationed near the capital city. One village in the endemic area, San Marçal, had an S. intercalatum prevalence of 43%, with 14 persons > 40 years of age harbouring severe infections. The transmission area is restricted

[Infectious cellulitis and Shewanella alga septicemia in an immunocompetent patient].

BACKGROUND: Shewanella alga is a Gram-negative bacilla often found in water or soil. Clinical infections in humans are rare, with serious infections described generally in immunocompromised hosts. CASE REPORT: A 66 year-old man with a heel wound had developed, after numerous sea baths in the Atlantic ocean (Oleron island, France), an infectious cellulitis of the leg with Shewanella alga septicemia. Despite the absence of immunodeficiency in this patient, infectious cellulitis and septicemia occurred via a wound to the skin and contact with sea water. Healing was seen after treatment with cefo

First Report of the Malacosporean Parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae in the Faroe Islands Reveals Widespread Distribution and High Prevalence in Brown Trout.

The myxozoan endoparasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Tb), the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in salmonids, has predominantly been reported in temperate regions of continental Europe and North America. Here, we present the first record of Tb in the Faroe Islands, extending the known northern distribution of the parasite. We sampled 161 brown trout (Salmo trutta) and three Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from 16 streams across the Faroes. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis of kidney tissue detected Tb in 14 streams, with mean prevalence of 65.6%, reaching 100% in six strea
