Hearing problems in patients with hereditary gelsolin amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: Gelsolin amyloidosis (AGel amyloidosis) is a hereditary form of systemic amyloidosis featuring ophthalmological, neurological and cutaneous symptoms. Previous studies based mainly on patients' self-reporting have indicated that hearing impairment might also be related to the disease, considering the progressive cranial neuropathy characteristic for AGel amyloidosis. In order to deepen the knowledge of possible AGel amyloidosis-related hearing problems, a clinical study consisting of the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ) questionnaire, clinical examination, automa

Patient comfort in audiological testing.

A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the relative comfort of a comprehensive range of diagnostic procedures. The mean comfort ranking and variability in comfort were examined. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry are the most comfortable tests, while caloric testing and transtympanic electrocochleography are the least comfortable. However, caloric testing and glycerol dehydration are not significantly different in comfort to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and brainstem evoked response testing is more comfortable than other diagnostic tests, including MRI. The reasons fo

Audiological characteristics of some affected members of a Dutch DFNA13/COL11A2 family.

Members of a Dutch DFNA13/COL11A2 family were evaluated with pure tone audiometry, stapedial reflexes, otoacoustic emissions, loudness scaling, difference limen for frequency, gap detection, and speech perception in quiet and noise. The tone audiometry showed a predominant loss for the low and middle frequencies, with only a few otoacoustic emissions at thresholds better than 25 dB hearing level. The stapedial reflexes appeared elevated, and loudness growth curves were shifted parallel to those for normal-hearing subjects, indicating a shift of the dynamic range toward higher presentation leve

Audiological evaluation of nonspeaking, physically challenged populations.

When assessing the hearing of physically challenged nonspeaking individuals, examiners generally restrict the assessment to pure tone testing which limits the diagnostic value of the evaluation. This study recommends adapting the standard speech audiometry procedures by utilizing an eye gaze response mode. Results indicate that an eye gaze technique can be used effectively in a clinical setting. Strategies and techniques are proposed for adapting a variety of speech audiometric procedures.

Intrasubject variability in potential early markers of sensorineural hearing damage.

The quest for noninvasive early markers for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has yielded diverse measures of interest. However, comprehensive studies evaluating the test-retest reliability of multiple measures and stimuli within a single study are scarce, and a standardized clinical protocol for robust early markers of SNHL remains elusive. To address these gaps, this study explores the intra-subject variability of various potential electroencephalogram- (EEG-) biomarkers for cochlear synaptopathy (CS) and other SNHL-markers in the same individuals. Fifteen normal-hearing young adults underwe
