Community-referenced sight words and phrases were taught to adolescents with mild and moderate mental retardation using three instructional methods in two locations. Words were presented on flash cards in a school setting, on videotape recordings in a school setting, and on naturally occurring signs in the community. During each session, participants were taught one third of the words in each of these conditions and were then tested at the community sites. A constant prompt delay procedure was used to promote stimulus control to the experimenter's cue initially and then to transfer control to

The ability of profoundly deaf schoolchildren to learn the voicing distinction was studied over a period of 6 months. The children were given daily speech therapy and half of them received, in addition, visual feedback from a microprocessor-based speech training aid - the Fricative and Timing Aid. Their performance was analysed in terms of the acquisition of voiced v. voiceless stop consonants and of their position in a word. Results yielded by perceptual tests showed a substantial increase in the intelligibility of stop consonants at the end of the training programme. Retention scores, i.e. i

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to (1) develop a series of short interactive videos (or reusable learning objects [RLOs]) covering a broad range of practical and psychosocial issues relevant to the auditory rehabilitation for first-time hearing aid users; (2) establish the accessibility, take-up, acceptability and adherence of the RLOs; and (3) assess the benefits and cost-effectiveness of the RLOs.
DESIGN: The study was a single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial with two arms. The intervention group (RLO+, n = 103) received the RLOs plus standard clinical service inclu

BACKGROUND: Oral and dental health education is typically delivered using visual methods on jaw models. However, these methods are insufficient for individuals with visual impairments. This study aims to contribute to the oral and dental health of visually impaired adult individuals through specially designed educational methods incorporating audio guidance, Braille, and tactile models. The objectives of the study are to assess the oral health profile of visually impaired individuals, to develop an oral and dental health education model using tactile and auditory materials, to improve oral hea

AIM: This study aimed to compare the effects of two types of distraction techniques: passive, using audiovisual glasses (AV glasses), versus active, using an iPad, as an adjunct to local analgesia during vital pulp therapy in children.
METHODS: Pain behaviour, and heart rates from an exposure group (treatment with the aid of an iPad) and control group (treatment with the aid of AV glasses) were compared in a randomised, split-mouth design using the Wilcoxon signed rank test (pain and behaviour) and paired t test for heart rate scores at p 0.05.
RESULTS: Children (39) (mean age 6.27 years) re

This study tested the hypothesis that flight-phobic patients experience change at different rates even when they are receiving identical treatment. Faster within-session rates of change (WSRC) were expected for patients who required fewer exposure sessions. The study also tested the theoretical role of autonomic flexibility on WSRC. High flexibility should be associated with faster rates of change. Thirty-seven flight-phobic patients were successfully treated with a computer-assisted fear of flying treatment. A significant negative correlation was found between total number of sessions and WSR

BACKGROUND: Health problems commonly associated with the eruption of teeth in babies continue to pose problems in Nigeria. Even nurses who should be well informed have misconceived views. In order to enlighten mothers and healthcare workers on this issue, a photo-poster was developed as a health-education tool. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the poster, displayed in the workplace for 18 months, on the knowledge, attitude and reported practice of nurses. The study also aimed to assess the outcome of the inclusion of the photo-poster in training materials in a workshop s

Hearing problems have a profound influence on the lives of the elderly. The ability to communicate is frequently a deciding factor in determining a person's autonomy, independence, and overall well-being and happiness. In the works of Ralph Naunton, in the introduction to the report, "Society is ill-informed about the importance of speech communication and about the devastating effects of communication difficulties, and it is ill-informed about the cost effectiveness of providing communication aids to the elderly and about the cost to society and to the individual of not providing them." This

A life history approach enables study of how risk or health protection is shaped by critical transitions and turning points in a life trajectory and in the context of social environment and time. We employed visual and narrative life history methods with people who inject drugs to explore how hepatitis C protection was enabled and maintained over the life course. We overview our methodological approach, with a focus on the ethics in practice of using life history timelines and life-grids with 37 participants. The life-grid evoked mixed emotions for participants: pleasure in receiving a persona

Genetic counselling (GC) services for inherited breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) are underutilized by African American (AA) women. We sought to evaluate factors associated with knowledge gain in a sample of AA women diagnosed with early-onset breast cancer, in whom GC for HBOC was provided, using a culturally targeted genetic counselling aid (GCA). Through a cancer registry-based study, phone-based GC for HBOC was offered to AA women with breast cancer < or =50. A questionnaire to assess knowledge about HBOC was completed prior to GC. All women were provided a GCA about HBOC developed by the i

Methodologically and theoretically based on metarrepresentational deficit hypothesis, we design an intervention to teach the mental state of pretense to an autistic boy. The production and comprehension of symbolic play by means of the use of two specific strategies founded on pictorial analogy of the mental representation and process, was the focus of the learning. The efficiency and efectiveness of the program is reflected in the results that indicated the subject's competence to generate and comprehend the pretense as well as to generalize the acquired knowledge into other areas of mentalis

BACKGROUND: Low blood donor rates among African American persons are recognized; however, few strategies exist to increase these numbers.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A 1-year, prospective, ecologic study performed before and after an educational intervention designed to test the hypothesis that increased education about the importance of blood donation for children with sickle cell disease (SCD) would result in an increase in total blood donors among African American persons.
RESULTS: Approximately 5000 videos were mailed to 50 percent of the households in a zip code where 98 percent of the re

The Furlow double-opposing z-plasty technique of palate repair has become a common treatment for cleft palate. The procedure is more complicated than other methods of palate closure and is difficult for the trainee to visualize; It is even more difficult for the layperson without prior understanding of the concept of z-plasty to understand. A simple, inexpensive, portable model is described that shows the key elements of the repair and can be used for parent, patient, student, and resident teaching.

Twenty-eight three- and four-year-old normal children participated in a study where they were exposed to a tape-slide series before a first dental examination. The audiovisual product gives an explanation about a first examination, the children having no previous dental experience. The purposes of the study were to evaluate the behavior modification that took place and to see whether differences could be found with the results of the same study performed four years before, with developmentally disabled children. The results obtained with normal children were the opposite of those obtained with

This paper describes the physiotherapy and occupational therapy used in treating a 74-year-old woman with a left brachial plexus lesion, a break in the axillary artery, dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint, a broken scapula and clavicula, serial left rib fractures, and lacerations on the upper and lower arm. After testing the patient, the following goals were set: reduce pain, soften scar tissue, and improve joint motion, muscle strength, and functionality of the hand. A 12-month outpatient program was used. Various analgesics were used to reduce pain, and a special aid was made to unwei
