The electronystagmographic auditory brainstem response and magnetic resonance imaging findings for a 33-year-old male with a 3.5 cm left vestibular schwannoma are presented. Of particular interest was the presence of an unusual positioning nystagmus following the Dix-Hallpike maneuver in the right head-hanging position. The patient demonstrated a nystagmus that was immediate in onset and not fatigueable upon repeated positioning. During positioning, the patient experienced a vertical bobbing sensation and dysphoria, but not rotational vertigo. Most importantly, the nystagmus had a predominant

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants (CIs) enable people with moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss to perceive sounds, but perceptual outcomes with a CI remain highly variable from person to person. Individuals who wear their CI consistently tend to exhibit better auditory outcomes than those who do not wear their CI as often. However, even the best-performing CI users typically exert more effort to understand speech than their peers with normal hearing, which can lead to listening-related fatigue. In this study, we aimed to understand whether the amount of time an individual wears a CI ea

OBJECT: To investigate whether hand-arm vibration and noise have a combined effect on temporary threshold shift (TTS) of hearing among healthy subjects.
METHOD AND DESIGN: Nineteen healthy subjects with an average age of 25.7 (SD 7.7) years were exposed to vibration (30 m/s2, 60 Hz), noise [90 dB(A)] and both, respectively. The subject's right hand was placed on the plate of a vibrator and the right ear exposed to noise via headphones. Subjects were exposed to vibration and/or noise for 3 min and after a 1-min pause the exposure was repeated five times. Hearing thresholds at 1, 4 and 6 kHz we

140 patients with various forms of sensorineural hearing loss were examined via the glycerol test (Klockhoff). In 66% of the cases with Menière's disease, a typical temporary threshold shift could be seen. 17 patients with fluctuating hearing loss of unknown etiology without vestibular symptoms showed a similar effect; they were classified as belonging to the group of the cochlear type of Menière's disease. In 34% of cases with clinically assured diagnosis of Ménière's disease, glycerol did not induce improvement in hearing. Repeated glycerol tests revealed varying results; shortly after a Men

Evidence that reduced levels of cochlear melanin are associated with increased auditory sensitivity, increased levels of auditory fatigue and an increased susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss led us to investigate the effects of noise exposure on the cochlear microphonic (CM) in albino and pigmented English shorthair guinea pigs. CMs were recorded from the round window prior to and at 90 min and 7 days after exposure to 45 min of 126 dB noise. Thresholds for the first detectable elicitation of the CM for four pure tones were determined and the output voltage of each cochlea was measure

Patients with multiple sclerosis, despite advances in therapy, often suffer from locomotor impairment that limits their mobility and affect quality of life. Rehabilitation is part of the treatment of MS and has shown its beneficial effects in numerous studies. While traditional rehabilitation techniques remain in the limelight, new technologies are emerging and make it possible to improve the management of disabling symptoms. The aim of this update is to synthesize the new therapy techniques proposed in rehabilitation for patients with multiple sclerosis according to the symptoms as balance, g

Background: Auditory alarms in patient monitoring are vital for clinical safety, but their harsh acoustic properties and high frequency contribute to stress, alarm fatigue, and reduced acceptance among healthcare staff. In collaboration with Sen Sound, Philips redesigned its alarm sounds to reduce auditory harshness, particularly for low- and medium-priority alarms, while preserving the salience of high-priority alerts. This study evaluated the impact of these refined alarm sounds in a real-world clinical setting. Objective: The goal was to determine whether anesthesia professionals perceive t

There are reports of associations between SARS-CoV2, COVID-19, COVID-19 vaccines, and auditory symptoms (hearing difficulty, tinnitus). However, most studies have relied on self-report and lack baseline and/or non-COVID control groups. This makes it problematic to differentiate if symptoms are associated with SARS-CoV2, COVID-19, the vaccine, psychosocial factors or recall bias. In this study, we differentiate these by comparing hearing and tinnitus survey data collected pre- and during the pandemic. The survey conducted during the pandemic asked about the onset and change in three types of sy

Audiovestibular symptoms during the acute phase of the corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19), have been reported for earlier waves of the pandemic, while no studies investigated nor compared audiovestibular manifestations during subsequent waves of COVID-19. In the current study, we aimed to compare the occurrence of audiovestibular symptoms associated with COVID-19 between the alpha/beta, delta, and omicron variants. An online questionnaire was distributed to individuals with confirmed test results for COVID-19. We asked participants to report whether they experienced audiovestibular symptoms

Noise induced hearing loss is associated with increased excitability in the central auditory system but the cellular correlates of such changes remain to be characterized. Here we tested the hypothesis that noise-induced hearing loss causes deterioration of perineuronal nets (PNNs) in the auditory cortex of mice. PNNs are specialized extracellular matrix components that commonly enwrap cortical parvalbumin (PV) containing GABAergic interneurons. Compared to somatosensory and visual cortex, relatively less is known about PV/PNN expression patterns in the primary auditory cortex (A1). Whether ch

Indoor air contamination with toxic opportunistic molds is an emerging health risk worldwide. Some of the opportunistic molds include: Stachybotrys chartarum, Aspergillus species (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, A. versicolor etc.), Cadosporium, Alternaria, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Fusarium graminearum etc. These molds flourish in homes that are moist and damp. Reports of floods are now evident in many parts of the world. With these global changes in climatic conditions that favor the opportunistic mode of living among these molds, some health authorities are beginning to feel concerned ab

Hearing is an extremely complex phenomenon, involving a large number of interrelated variables that are difficult to measure in vivo. In order to investigate such process under simplified and well-controlled conditions, models of sound transmission have been developed through many decades of research. The value of modeling the hearing system is not only to explain the normal function of the hearing system and account for experimental and clinical observations, but to simulate a variety of pathological conditions that lead to hearing damage and hearing loss, as well as for development of audito

High intensity underwater sounds may cause temporary hearing threshold shifts (TTSs) in harbor porpoises, the magnitude of which may depend on the exposure duration. After exposure to playbacks of pile driving sounds, TTSs in two porpoises were quantified at 4 and 8 kHz with a psychophysical technique. At 8 kHz, the pile driving sounds caused the highest TTS. Pile driving sounds had the following: pulse duration 124 ms, rate 2760 strikes/h, inter-pulse interval 1.3 s, duty cycle ∼9.5%, average received single-strike unweighted broadband sound exposure level (SELss) 145 dB re 1 μPa(2)s, exposur

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for depression, but can have negative side effects including amnesia. The mechanisms of action underlying both the antidepressant and side effects of ECT are not well understood. An equivalent manipulation that is conducted in experimental animals is electroconvulsive seizure (ECS). Rodent studies have provided valuable insights into potential mechanisms underlying the antidepressant and side effects of ECT. However, relatively few studies have investigated the effects of ECS in animal models with a depression-relevant manipulation such

Previous study reported that either selective GSK-3β inhibitor or up-regulating autophagy can alleviate cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Other studies indicate that the activity of GSK-3β is closely associated with the autophagy level. The purpose of this study is to primarily explore the role of autophagy in the alleviation effect of GSK-3β inhibition on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in vivo and in vitro. We observed the autophagy changes induced by GSK-3β inhibitor in outer hair cells (OHCs) in a cisplatin-induced ototoxicity rat model. In addition, autophagy inhibitor 3-MA was used in vitro e

INTRODUCTION: Patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) commonly report symptoms of vocal effort, fatigue, discomfort, odynophonia, and aberrant vocal quality (eg, vocal strain, hoarseness). However, voice symptoms most salient to pMTD have not been identified. Furthermore, how standard vocal fatigue and vocal tract discomfort indices that capture persistent symptoms-like the Vocal Fatigue Index (VFI) and Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTDS)-relate to acute symptoms experienced at the time of the voice evaluation is unclear. Finally, correlations between voice symptoms and acoustic

BACKGROUND: Occupational noise exposure has been identified as a significant risk factor for fish harvesters. Chronic noise exposure causes hearing and other health problems and undermines the quality of life and well-being. This review paper aims to highlight noise-related auditory and non-auditory health effects among fish harvesters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search approach was adopted using the following databases: PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and by exploring grey literature. The literature search was conducted in 2020 (between October 15

BACKGROUND: While hearing loss is the most emblematic effect of exposure to high sound pressure levels, it is not neither the first nor the only one. This article explores self-reported effects of exposure to high sound pressure levels among a population of 306 academic musicians (singers, choir members and instrumentalists) in Uruguay.
METHODS: A special anamnesis form was prepared for use in interviews of each of the participants. The collected information was anonymized and processed. Some interesting results were found, both through direct processing and PCA analysis.
RESULTS: Most parti
