Transient CD15 expression reflects stages of differentiation and maturation in the human subcortical central auditory pathway.

The expression of the terminal saccharide determinant CD15 (3[a1-3]-fucosyl-N-acetyl-lactosamine) was evaluated in the central auditory system of the human developing brain by using monoclonal antibodies against this epitope. CD15 immunoreactivity was first observed in the ventral cochlear nucleus at 10 weeks of gestation, whereas the dorsal cochlear nucleus became positive from 13 weeks of gestation. In both nuclei, the intensity of immunoreactivity increased until 16 weeks of gestation and lasted until 25 weeks of gestation. In the inferior colliculi, CD15 was poorly expressed in the central

BAEPs in hereditary motor-sensory neuropathies. Involvement of central brain-stem parts of the auditory pathway.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were tested in 34 patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), most of which with HMSN type I with the autosomal dominant type of inheritance. In only a few cases a recessive or sporadic form of the disease was diagnosed, and one patient was rated as HMSN type III. In 44% complicated forms with signs of CNS involvement (cerebellar manifestation, nystagmus or cranial nerve lesions) were ascertained. BAEPs tests revealed slightly, albeit non-significantly prolonged wave III latency while wave V latency was significantly prolonged and

Evaluation of auditory pathway excitability using a pre-operative trans-tympanic electrically evoked auditory brainstem response under local anesthesia in cochlear implant candidates.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective promontory stimulation is used to evaluate cochlear implant (CI) candidacy, but the test reliability is low. Electrically evoked auditory brainstem response (EABR) can verify the function of the auditory system objectively. This study's procedure uses a trans-tympanic rounded bent-tip electrode to perform pre-operative EABR under local anaesthesia (LA-TT-EABR) using MED-EL Software and Hardware. This study aimed to determine usability and effectiveness for CI candidates. DESIGN: We hypothesised that LA-TT-EABR waveforms of good quality would be related to successful hear

Age-related changes in mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme Trx2 and TXNIP-Trx2-ASK1 signal pathways in the auditory cortex of a mimetic aging rat model: changes to Trx2 in the auditory cortex.

Age-associated degeneration in the central auditory system, which is defined as central presbycusis, can impair sound localization and speech perception. Research has shown that oxidative stress plays a central role in the pathological process of central presbycusis. Thioredoxin 2 (Trx2), one member of thioredoxin family, plays a key role in regulating the homeostasis of cellular reactive oxygen species and anti-apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between Trx2 and the phenotype of central presbycusis using a mimetic aging animal model induced by long-term exposu

Biomarkers of auditory cortical plasticity and development of binaural pathways in children with unilateral hearing loss using a hearing aid.

Congenital or early-onset unilateral hearing loss (UHL) can disrupt the normal development of the auditory system. In extreme cases of UHL (i.e., single sided deafness), consistent cochlear implant use during sensitive periods resulted in cortical reorganization that partially reversed the detrimental effects of unilateral sensory deprivation. There is a gap in knowledge, however, regarding cortical plasticity i.e. the brain's capacity to adapt, reorganize, and develop binaural pathways in milder degrees of UHL rehabilitated by a hearing aid (HA). The current study was set to investigate early

Auditory Pathway Maturation in Full-term Small for Gestational Age Children: A Systematic Review with Meta-analysis.

Introduction  Factors of intrauterine growth restriction have been responsible for the births of full-term babies small for their gestational age (SGA). Scientific evidence points that this restriction can cause changes in the neural maturation process. Objectives  To analyze the absolute latencies and interpeak intervals of brainstem auditory evoked potential waves in full-term and SGA children to investigate whether there are changes of neural maturation in this population. Data Synthesis  The search for articles that reported the assessment of brainstem auditory evoked potential in SGA newb

The Effect of Noise Trauma and Deep Brain Stimulation of the Medial Geniculate Body on Tissue Activity in the Auditory Pathway.

Tinnitus is defined as the phantom perception of sound. To date, there is no curative treatment, and contemporary treatments have failed to show beneficial outcomes. Deep brain stimulation has been suggested as a potential therapy for refractory tinnitus. However, the optimal target and stimulation regimens remain to be defined. Herein, we investigated metabolic and neuronal activity changes using cytochrome C oxidase histochemistry and c-Fos immunohistochemistry in a noise trauma-induced rat model of tinnitus. We also assessed changes in neuronal activity following medial geniculate body (MGB

A Non-canonical Reticular-Limbic Central Auditory Pathway via Medial Septum Contributes to Fear Conditioning.

In the mammalian brain, auditory information is known to be processed along a central ascending pathway leading to auditory cortex (AC). Whether there exist any major pathways beyond this canonical auditory neuraxis remains unclear. In awake mice, we found that auditory responses in entorhinal cortex (EC) cannot be explained by a previously proposed relay from AC based on response properties. By combining anatomical tracing and optogenetic/pharmacological manipulations, we discovered that EC received auditory input primarily from the medial septum (MS), rather than AC. A previously uncharacter

Distribution of Fos-like immunoreactivity in the auditory pathway of the Sprague-Dawley rat elicited by cochlear electrical stimulation.

Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was mapped in the auditory pathway of Sprague-Dawley rats in response to unilateral electrical stimulation of the cochlea implanted with two stimulating electrodes. Densely packed FLI neurons were widely distributed in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (more ipsilaterally than contralaterally), while FLI neurons were rare in the posteroventral cochlear nucleus and virtually absent in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus. Sparse FLI was detected in the superior olivary complex, the pontine nuclei and the ipsilateral dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus, whereas the co

Visual, auditory and somatosensory pathway involvement in hereditary cerebellar ataxia, Friedreich's ataxia and familial spastic paraplegia.

Pattern-reversal visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded from 11 patients with hereditary cerebellar ataxia, 13 with familial spastic paraplegia and 7 with Friedreich's ataxia. In all the 31 patients the conduction velocity along the median and tibial nerves to the level of the spinal cord was normal. Five of the 7 patients with Friedreich's ataxia had reduced sural nerve sensory potentials. There was electrophysiological evidence of malfunction along one or several pathways within the CNS in 8 of the 11 patients with cerebellar ataxia, 4 of the 13 with familial spas

Calcitonin-gene related peptide is an evolutionarily conserved marker within the amniote thalamo-telencephalic auditory pathway.

The distribution of neurons and fibers containing calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) was mapped in the thalamo-telencephalic auditory pathways of four amniote species, rats, pigeons (Columba livia), caiman (Caiman crocodilus), and turtles (Pseudemys scripta). In colchicine-treated turtles and pigeons, numerous CGRP+ perikarya were observed in the auditory relay nucleus of the thalamus (n. reuniens of reptiles, and n. ovoidalis of birds). In pigeons, these neurons were most abundant in the outer circumference of the nucleus and were not observed without colchicine pretreatment. In the telen

[The propagation pathways of an excitatory stimulus to the receptor apparatus during the initiation of auditory sensations using amplitude-modulated focused ultrasound].

Studies have been made on thresholds of perception of amplitude-modulated focused ultrasound (AMFU) during modulation by 125-8,000 Hz in 6 healthy subjects, 100 patients with otosclerosis before and after operation, and 13 subjects with other disturbances in hearing. Perception thresholds for AMFU were compared with bone and air audiograms in the same subjects. Changes in the thresholds for AMFU after operation were of the same pattern as those in the thresholds for air audiometry, indicating mainly aerial pathway of signal transmission for AMFU. Perception of AMFU in otosclerotic patients is

The miR-34a/Bcl-2 Pathway Contributes to Auditory Cortex Neuron Apoptosis in Age-Related Hearing Loss.

HYPOTHESIS: The miR-34a/Bcl-2 signaling pathway may play a role in the mechanisms related to age-related hearing loss (AHL) in the auditory cortex. BACKGROUND: The auditory cortex plays a key role in the recognition and processing of complex sound. It is difficult to explain why patients with AHL have poor speech recognition, so increasing numbers of studies have focused on its central change. Although micro (mi)RNAs in the central nervous system have recently been increasingly reported to be associated with age-related diseases, the molecular mechanisms of AHL in the auditory cortex are not

Bilateral Changes of Spontaneous Activity Within the Central Auditory Pathway Upon Chronic Unilateral Intracochlear Electrical Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, cochlear implants have been applied successfully for the treatment of unilateral hearing loss with quite surprising benefit. One reason for this successful treatment, including the relief from tinnitus, could be the normalization of spontaneous activity in the central auditory pathway because of the electrical stimulation. The present study, therefore, investigated at a cellular level, the effect of a unilateral chronic intracochlear stimulation on key structures of the central auditory pathway. DESIGN: Normal-hearing guinea pigs were mechanically single-sided dea

Effect on auditory threshold of air and water pockets bordering the pathway between soft tissue stimulation sites and the cochlea.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory sensation can be elicited by applying a bone conduction vibrator to skin sites on the head, neck, and thorax over soft tissues. This is called soft tissue conduction (STC). We hypothesized that introducing substances with acoustic impedances that sharply deviate from those of soft tissues, such as air pockets, into the soft tissues beneath soft tissue stimulation sites would have an effect on the auditory threshold to stimulation at skin sites over soft tissue. METHODS: In human subjects, we assessed the auditory threshold with a bone vibrator applied to several STC sites

Functional impairment of the auditory pathway after perinatal asphyxia and the short-term effect of perinatal propofol anesthesia in lambs.

BACKGROUND: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common feature in the postasphyxial syndrome in newborns. Several anesthetic drugs have been proposed to attenuate secondary neuronal injury elicited by hypoxia-ischemia. We hypothesized that propofol anesthesia reduces auditory impairment after perinatal asphyxia in comparison with isoflurane. METHODS: Twenty-three pregnant ewes were randomized to propofol or isoflurane anesthesia and sedation. The lambs underwent in utero umbilical cord occlusion (isoflurane n = 5; propofol n = 7) and were compared with sham-treated animals (isoflurane n =
