Speech perception in noise for children with auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony type hearing loss.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of background noise on speech perception in children with auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony (AN/AD) type hearing loss. DESIGN: Open and closed-set speech perception abilities were assessed in 12 school-age children who had been diagnosed with AN/AD in infancy. Data were also obtained from a cohort of subjects with sensorineural (SN) hearing loss and from a group of normal-hearing children. RESULTS: Closed-set speech understanding was more affected by the presence of a competing signal in the hearing impaired than in the normal-hearing subjects. The mean S/N

Modulation of auditory temporal processing, speech in noise perception, auditory-verbal memory, and reading efficiency by anodal tDCS in children with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is prevalent in children. It is estimated that 30-50% of individuals diagnosed with dyslexia also manifest an auditory perceptual deficit characteristic of auditory processing disorder (APD). Some studies suggest that defects in basic auditory processing can lead to phonological defects as the most prominent cause of dyslexia. Thus, in some cases, there may be interrelationships between dyslexia and some of the aspects of central auditory processing. In recent years, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been used as a safe method for

The Role of Age-Related Declines in Subcortical Auditory Processing in Speech Perception in Noise.

Older adults, even those without hearing impairment, often experience increased difficulties understanding speech in the presence of background noise. This study examined the role of age-related declines in subcortical auditory processing in the perception of speech in different types of background noise. Participants included normal-hearing young (19 - 29 years) and older (60 - 72 years) adults. Normal hearing was defined as pure-tone thresholds of 25 dB HL or better at octave frequencies from 0.25 to 4 kHz in both ears and at 6 kHz in at least one ear. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) to s

A case of auditory agnosia with impairment of perception and expression of music: cognitive processing of tonality.

There is fairly general agreement that the melody and the rhythm are the independent components of the perception of music. In the theory of music, the melody and harmony determine to which tonality the music belongs. It remains an unsettled question whether the tonality is also an independent component of the perception of music, or a by-product of the melody and harmony. We describe a patient with auditory agnosia and expressive amusia that developed after a bilateral infarction of the temporal lobes. We carried out a detailed examination of musical ability in the patient and in control subj

[Development and testing of the Heidelberg preschool screening for auditory perception and speech processing (HVS)].

There is a lack of standardized and quick tests assessing auditory perception and language processing in preschool children in German. Therefore we developed a screening for auditory perception and speech and language processing, analyzed it statistically and evaluated it in 180 children from 15 preschools. The screening comprises 7 tasks: auditory short-term memory, phonological analyses of word-initial sounds, syllable segmentation, phonological discrimination, articulatory sequencing, semantic versus phonological classification, and rhyming. Results indicated objectivity and reliability of t

Stress across timescales: differential effects of acute and chronic stress on auditory processing and perception.

Stress has long been linked to auditory dysfunction and altered sound perception, but its effects are often discussed without fully distinguishing between acute and chronic stress timescales. Here, we integrate evidence that acute and chronic stress engage partly overlapping but temporally distinct mechanisms and produce different auditory outcomes. Acute stress triggers rapid neuromodulatory and hormonal responses that can transiently alter auditory filtering, deviance detection, attention, and sound sensitivity, often biasing the system toward heightened salience and vigilance. In contrast,

Domain-specific deficits in categorical perception unveil the neural architecture of auditory agnosia in dementia.

Auditory processing deficits are a prominent early feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet whether they reflect generalized cognitive slowing or domain-specific neural degradation remains unclear. This study combined a categorical perception paradigm with high-temporal-resolution electroencephalography (EEG) to evaluate neural responses to distinct combinations of acoustic cues, rapid temporal dynamics (consonants) versus stable spectral configurations (lexical tones), across a continuum of healthy aging, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and AD. Rather than a monolithic functional loss, behav

Impaired folate metabolism reshapes auditory response profiles and impairs loudness perception in MTHFR-deficient mice.

Folate metabolism, regulated by methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), is crucial for proper neurodevelopment, and disruptions-whether due to genetic polymorphisms or maternal nutritional deficits-have been linked to cognitive and behavioral impairments. Notably, MTHFR-deficient mouse models display altered social interaction and auditory communication, hinting at disruptions in auditory-related circuits and prompting the question of whether impaired folate metabolism might also affect sound processing and perception. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we show that MTHFR deficiency

Auditory cortex ensembles jointly encode sound and locomotion speed to support sound perception during movement.

The ability to process and act upon incoming sounds during locomotion is critical for survival and adaptive behavior. Despite the established role that the auditory cortex (AC) plays in behavior- and context-dependent sound processing, previous studies have found that auditory cortical activity is on average suppressed during locomotion as compared to immobility. While suppression of auditory cortical responses to self-generated sounds results from corollary discharge, which weakens responses to predictable sounds, the functional role of weaker responses to unpredictable external sounds during

Structural and functional atypicality in the temporal cortex are associated with auditory perception in maltreated children.

Child maltreatment adversely affects brain development, resulting in vulnerabilities in brain structure and function connectivity, as well as various psychiatric disorders. However, the relationship between structural changes in auditory-related regions and auditory function remains unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between auditory frequencies associated with brain atypicality and child maltreatment. T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and functional MRI were used to assess differences in gray matter volume (GMV) and functional connectivity (FC) in maltreat

Influence of Tinnitus on Auditory Spectral and Temporal Resolution and Speech Perception in Tinnitus Patients.

UNLABELLED: Although cochlear damage is believed to trigger the perception of tinnitus in the central auditory system, its pathophysiological mechanism is still unclear. We aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of tinnitus using psychoacoustic assessments of auditory spectral and temporal resolution and speech perception in noise. Human subjects with tinnitus and symmetric hearing thresholds were divided into three groups: nine unilateral tinnitus subjects with normal hearing thresholds (Group 1), 12 unilateral tinnitus subjects with hearing loss (HL; Group 2), and nine bilateral tinnitus s

Contributing to the early detection of Rett syndrome: the potential role of auditory Gestalt perception.

To assess whether there are qualitatively deviant characteristics in the early vocalizations of children with Rett syndrome, we had 400 native Austrian-German speakers listen to audio recordings of vocalizations from typically developing girls and girls with Rett syndrome. The audio recordings were rated as (a) inconspicuous, (b) conspicuous or (c) not able to decide between (a) and (b). The results showed that participants were accurate in differentiating the vocalizations of typically developing children compared to children with Rett syndrome. However, the accuracy for rating verbal behavio

Factors affecting compliance and resistance to auditory command hallucinations: perceptions of a clinical population.

BACKGROUND: Elements of voice content and characteristics of a hallucinatory voice are considered to be associated with compliance and resistance to auditory command hallucinations. However, a need for further exploration of such features remains. AIMS: To explore the associations across different types of commands (benign, self-harm, harm-other) with a range of symptom measures and a trait measure of expressed compliance with compliance to the most recent command and command hallucinations over the previous 28 days. METHODS: Participants meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental D

The effect of auditory stress on perception of intraesophageal acid in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Most patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) report that stress exacerbates their symptoms, yet mechanisms underlying this association remain unknown. We sought to determine the effect of an acute laboratory stressor on perceptual and emotional responses to intraesophageal acid perfusion in healthy controls and patients with GERD. METHODS: Forty-six patients with heartburn and 10 healthy controls underwent upper endoscopy and, if negative, pH monitoring. Assessment of psychologic factors and health-related quality of life was done by a questionnaire. Perceptual

In search of the auditory, phonetic, and/or phonological problems in dyslexia: context effects in speech perception.

There is a growing consensus that developmental dyslexia is associated with a phonological-core deficit. One symptom of this phonological deficit is a subtle speech-perception deficit. The auditory basis of this deficit is still hotly debated. If people with dyslexia, however, do not have an auditory deficit and perceive the underlying acoustic dimensions of speech as well as people who read normally, then why do they exhibit a categorical-perception deficit? A potential answer to this conundrum lies in the possibility that people with dyslexia do not adequately handle the context-dependent va

Cerebral lateralization in linguistic and nonlinguistic perception: analysis of cognitive styles in the auditory modality.

Twenty-two normal subjects (9 left-handers, 13 right-handers) and five dyslexic patients (3 right-handers, and 2 left-handers) were characterized by physiologic hemisphere dominance. The latter was determined by the response of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) blood flow velocity, measured using the transcranial Doppler (TCD) technique, to hypoventilation (hypercapnia). Using bilateral almost simultaneous TCD measurements of mean blood flow velocity in the MCA, lateralization was determined in response to linguistic and nonlinguistic paradigms. In relation to the linguistic paradigm, left-hand
