INTRODUCTION: Tomato growers need strategies that improve fruit nutritional quality and soil health while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers and wasting less crop straw. Fungal-fermented straw products (FSP) are a candidate amendment, but their suitable application rate, placement depth and side effects on soil microbes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain unclear.
METHODS: An FSP was produced from corn straw via solid-state fermentation for 30 d using Auricularia cornea cv. Yumuer. A single-season greenhouse pot experiment was conducted with an unamended control (no FSP) a

BACKGROUND: Emerging parasites pose increasing challenges at the interface of human, animal, and ecosystem health. Among these, Trichobilharzia spp., schistosomatid of migratory and resident waterfowl, can cause cercarial dermatitis (CD) when its larval stage (cercaria) accidentally penetrate human skin. While this parasite has been documented in several European countries, its presence in Portugal has remained unreported, leaving a critical gap in understanding potential zoonotic risks in local freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the presence of Trichobilharzia s

Aeromonas veronii is a highly pathogenic bacterium in aquaculture, causing fulminant septicemia in farmed fish and resulting in significant economic losses. Vaccination is a primary strategy for the prevention and control of this disease. To screen for the optimal adjuvant to enhance the immune efficacy of an attenuated live vaccine derived from the A. veronii TH0426 strain with a hisJ gene deletion (A. veronii TH0426△hisJ), propolis extract, aluminum hydroxide gel, β-glucan, and Auricularia auricula polysaccharide were combined with the vaccine and administered to crucian carp via intraperito

The effect of reservoir construction on medically important parasites is well known worldwide but lacks information in Vietnam. With 385 active hydropower plants and numerous water reservoirs, Vietnam provides an ideal setting for studying this issue. This study investigated trematode infection in snail first intermediate hosts from three hydropower reservoirs: Hoa Binh, Son La, and Thac Ba. In total, 25,299 snails representing 16 species were examined, with 959 individuals (8 species) shedding identifiable cercariae. Infection prevalence was highest in thiarid snails (5.4%-15.4%), followed by

The anti-dementia effect following ischemic stroke with metabolic syndrome (MetS) of the polyherbal functional ingredient comprising ginger, Chinese date, and wood ear mushroom (GCJ) was hypothesized due to its neuroprotective effect against stroke. This study was performed to test this hypothesis and to explore the underlying mechanism. Male Wistar rats weighing 180-220 g were induced metabolic syndrome (MetS) with a 16-week high-carbohydrate high-fat diet (HCHF) feeding. The rats with MetS characteristics were orally administered GCJ at various doses (GCJ100, GCJ200, and GCJ300 mg kg-1 BW) 2

Although mushrooms are widely used for nutraceutical purposes, post-harvest storage is extremely crucial to avoid degradation and quality reduction in fresh mushrooms. Drying treatments are commonly applied in the mushroom industry to extend shelf life. Drying may cause instability of food quality and antioxidant parameters due to unsuitable drying temperatures. Therefore, in this research a common set of temperatures typically used by mushroom growers was applied (50°C, 60°C, 70°C) to Ganoderma lucidum, Lignosus rhinocerus, Auricularia auricula-judae, and Schizophyllum commune to analyze colo

The most frequent causative agents of cercarial dermatitis in Europe are the avian schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia . They preferably parasitize birds of the Anatidae. Trichobilharzia spp. schistosomes are also able to penetrate mammalian skin, posing a health risk to mammals, including humans. Currently several loci from nuclear and mitochondrial genomes are determined for European species of Trichobilharzia . Among them there is 1 genome sequence, ToSau3A, which is suitable for detection of Trichobilharzia spp. infection in aquatic systems. In the present paper, we used a PCR assay

Secondary metabolites are hidden gems in mushrooms. Understanding these secondary metabolites' biological and pharmacological effects can be aided by identifying them. The purpose of this work was to profile the mycochemical components of the extracts of Auricularia auricula judae, Microporus xanthopus, Termitomyces umkowaani, Trametes elegans, and Trametes versicolor to comprehend their biological and pharmacological capabilities. Mushroom samples were collected from Kenya's Arabuko-Sokoke and Kakamega National Reserved Forests and identified using morphological and molecular techniques. Chlo

Swimmer's itch is caused by the penetration of free-swimming larvae of trematodes of the family Schistosomatidae in human skin. It is usually reported in people engaged in recreational water activities in freshwater bodies and in most of cases, it is provoked by bird schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia. In the summer 2017, many cases of dermatitis were recorded in people bathing in the waters of the Albano Lake (Rome, Italy) and a parasitological investigation was carried out in order to ascertain the causative agent of these cases. Snails of the family Lymnaeidae, natural intermediate h

BACKGROUND: Recent molecular studies have discovered substantial unrecognised diversity within the genus Diplostomum in fish populations in Europe and North America including three species complexes. However, data from the first intermediate host populations are virtually lacking. This study addresses the application of an integrative taxonomic approach to the cryptic species diversity of Diplostomum spp. in natural lymnaeid snail populations in Europe with a focus on the 'D. mergi' species complex.
METHODS: Totals of 1,909 Radix auricularia, 349 Radix peregra, 668 Stagnicola palustris and 24

The cytotoxic, cyclic depsipeptide (-)-doliculide was originally isolated by Ishiwata et al. (Ishiwata, H., Nemoto, T., Ojika, M., and Yamada, K. (1994) J. Org. Chem. 59, 4710-4711 and Ishiwata, H., Sone, H., Kigoshi, H., and Yamada, K. (1994) J. Org. Chem. 59, 4712-4713) from the sea hare Dolabella auricularia collected in Japanese waters, but the mechanism of action of the depsipeptide was not known. Using synthetic (-)-doliculide, we found that the compound arrests cells at the G(2)/M phase of the cell cycle by interfering with normal actin assembly. In cells, normal stress fibers disappear

The Brazilian Cerrado harbors a rich diversity of traditional communities, including several Indigenous peoples. Among them are the Guajajara, who inhabit regions extending from the state of Maranhão to the northeastern portion of Pará. Considering the importance of research into ethnomycological knowledge in indigenous communities for the preservation of culture and the environment, especially in relation to macrofungi, the aim of this study was to document and compile the uses of macrofungi by the original Guajajara peoples to evaluate and revitalize traditional knowledge among indigenous ge

Dolastatin 10 (Dol-10), a leading marine pentapeptide isolated from the Indian Ocean mollusk Dolabella auricularia, contains three unique amino acid residues. Dol-10 can effectively induce apoptosis of lung cancer cells and other tumor cells at nanomolar concentration, and it has been developed into commercial drugs for treating some specific lymphomas, so it has received wide attention in recent years. In vitro experiments showed that Dol-10 and its derivatives were highly lethal to common tumor cells, such as L1210 leukemia cells (IC50 = 0.03 nM), small cell lung cancer NCI-H69 cells (IC50 =

BACKGROUND: Oral health is increasingly recognized as a crucial determinant of overall health in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Specifically, the oral mycobiome may play a pivotal role in HIV-associated oral complications. However, the fungal species involved and their potential as biomarkers for HIV-related oral conditions remain poorly understood. This study investigates salivary fungal profiles in PLWHA who have sex with men (MSM), focusing on diversity, functional shifts, and correlations with disease progression.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 25 MSM participants divided

Polysaccharides from natural sources can regulate the composition of intestinal flora through the "gut-liver axis" pathway, potentially ameliorating alcoholic liver injury. Aspalathus linearis, also known as rooibos, is one such natural product that has shown promise in this regard. This study looked at the structural properties of A. linearis polysaccharide (ALP) and how well it would work to treat acute alcoholic liver impairment. This study looks at the composition of monosaccharides, functional groups, and molecular weight (Mw) of a newly discovered water-soluble polysaccharide, named ALP.
