The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia.

The role of the autonomic nervous system in trigeminal neuralgia is discussed. While the trigeminal nerve is accompanied by both sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers, first and second branch phenomena are predominantly associated with sympathetic stimuli. Third branch phenomena, by contrast, primarily involved a parasympathetic component. Atropine sulfate and beta-receptor blockers are suggested as a therapeutic modality. On ancillary studies involving 30 patients with trigeminal neuralgia an abnormal glucose tolerance and/or increased cholesterol level was found to be present in 28 cases.

The autonomic nervous system and the immune system in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

This study demonstrates that juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is associated with a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system as well as with disturbances in the capacity of the immune system to respond to mediators of the autonomic nervous system. In patients with active disease heart rate at rest is higher than in healthy controls. In addition, 3-hydroxy-4-phenoxyphenylglycol levels in urine are higher in all patients than in the control group. Cardiovascular responses to an orthostatic stress test (tilt up) are reduced in patients with active and nonactive disease. Plasma norepinephrine res

The role of the autonomic nervous system in nocturnal enuresis.

INTRODUCTION: Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is common in children, but its pathophysiology is still not fully understood. Despite the recognition of three major pathways, nocturnal polyuria, nocturnal bladder dysfunction and sleep disorders, their inter-relations remain elusive. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) which is greatly involved in both diuresis and sleep might have an important role in NE. METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search of Medline database was performed, to identify articles reporting on the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in enuretic children regarding sleep regul

The role of the autonomic nervous system in Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, consisting of multiple involuntary movements (motor tics) and one or more vocal (phonic) tics. It affects up to one percent of children worldwide, of whom about one third continue to experience symptoms into adulthood. The central neural mechanisms of tic generation are not clearly understood, however recent neuroimaging investigations suggest impaired cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical activity during motor control. In the current manuscript, we will tackle the relatively under-investigated role of the peripheral autonomic nervous system,

Chagas' disease and the involvement of the autonomic nervous system.

Chagas' disease is a major endemic disease in Latin America and a great cause for concern due to its high incidence: it afflicts 16 to 18 million individuals and places over 90 million people at risk of infection. At present, five mechanisms can be proposed to explain the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiopathy: 1. direct lesion of the tissue by Trypanosoma cruzi; 2. dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system (neurogenic concept); 3. microvascular disease; 4. immunologic reaction; 5. alterations in the extracellular matrix. The neurogenic concept is the most attractive explanation for the

Autonomous intranasal delivery systems for central nervous system therapeutics.

Intranasal delivery provides a rapid, non-invasive route to the central nervous system, bypassing the blood-brain barrier and first-pass metabolism. However, its therapeutic potential remains constrained by the nasal cavity's complex anatomy, the restricted surface area and permeability of the olfactory epithelium, and short drug residence times. Recent advances in nanotechnology and synthetic biology have enabled the development of autonomous and programmable delivery systems that can target the olfactory epithelium, enhance brain entry and sustain therapeutic release. This review highlights

Autonomic nervous system control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in asthma.

Patients with asthma have exaggerated bronchoconstriction of their airways in response to certain indirect (e.g. cold air, allergens, dust, exercise) or direct (e.g. inhaled methacholine) stimuli. This 'hyper-reactivity' usually co-exists with airway inflammation, although the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these changes are not fully understood. It is likely that this hyper-reactivity is associated with abnormal autonomic nervous system (ANS) control. In particular, the parasympathetic (vagal) component of the ANS appears to be implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma. In addition,

Targeting the Autonomic Nervous System for Treatment of Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary incontinence is a difficult condition that affects millions of people around the world. Recent research has opened the door to understanding the involvement of imbalance in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) as a cause of urge urinary incontinence (UUI) and has highlighted the therapeutic potential of targeting the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways. This mini-review discusses current pharmacological and neuromodulation approaches that act on the ANS to restore bladder function. Future research should investigate the role of the ANS in bladder dysfunction and incontinence in more

On interactions between fever, inflammation, and the autonomic nervous system.

The pathologist Simon Samuel, one of the pioneers in the field of the autonomic nervous system during the 19 th century, contributed significantly to the understanding of the pathological mechanisms underlying inflammation. The remarkable advances in that field around the mid-19 th century fundamentally influenced future research of the last 170 years. In fact these findings are still connected with many novel studies on pathology today. Albert Eulenburg (1840-1917) is another scientist who contributed to the former advances in the autonomic nervous system and who closely cooperated with Samue

The Vagal Link: Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an increasingly recognized cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy in which extracellular amyloid deposition leads to progressive structural and functional impairment. Beyond myocardial infiltration, growing evidence highlights the central role of autonomic nervous system dysfunction (ANS) -particularly the vagal nerve involvement-as a contributor to orthostatic intolerance, syncope, exercise limitation, arrhythmias, and reduced quality of life. Emerging data suggest that autonomic impairment may precede overt cardiac manifestations, offering a potential window for earl

Neuropeptides and the Autonomic Nervous System in Prader-Willi Syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, multisymptomatic genetic disorder caused by the absence or dysfunction of specific genes on chromosome 15. The genetic abnormality is anticipated to cause a dysfunction of the hypothalamus, which is also central in the regulation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Typical symptoms of PWS indicating a hypothalamic dysfunction include muscular hypotonia, poor growth, short stature, and feeding difficulties in infancy, which in early childhood are replaced by hyperphagia, leading to a high risk of obesity. Other characteristics, such as sleep difficultie

Autonomic Nervous System in Paralympic Athletes with Spinal Cord Injury.

Individuals sustaining a spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently suffer from sensorimotor and autonomic impairment. Damage to the autonomic nervous system results in cardiovascular, respiratory, bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunctions, as well as temperature dysregulation. These complications not only impede quality of life, but also affect athletic performance of individuals with SCI. This article summarizes existing evidence on how damage to the spinal cord affects the autonomic nervous system and impacts the performance in athletes with SCI. Also discussed are frequently used performance-enhanc

Lost among the trees? The autonomic nervous system and paediatrics.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) has been strikingly neglected in Western medicine. Despite its profound importance for regulation, adjustment and coordination of body systems, it lacks priority in training and practice and receives scant attention in numerous major textbooks. The ANS is integral to manifestations of illness, underlying familiar physical and psychological symptoms. When ANS activity is itself dysfunctional, usual indicators of acute illness may prove deceptive. Recognising the relevance of the ANS can involve seeing the familiar through fresh eyes, challenging assumptions in

Autonomic nervous system arousal and cognitive functioning in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Previous theories about the etiology of cognitive dysfunction in bipolar disorder (BD) emphasized trait factors such as neurological impairment. State factors, other than mood symptoms, that may exacerbate functional deficits have not yet been considered. The purpose of this study was to examine autonomic nervous system (ANS) arousal following cognitive challenge. The study compared patients with BD and healthy controls (HC) in physiological measures and neuropsychological test scores. METHODS: Thirty euthymic patients with BD and 22 HC completed the study. Participants completed m
