Outcome after autogenous brachial-axillary translocated superficial femoropopliteal vein hemodialysis access.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal configuration for patients with "complex" or "tertiary" hemodialysis access needs remains undefined. This study was designed to examine the utility of the autogenous brachial-axillary translocated superficial femoropopliteal vein access (SFV ACCESS) in this subset of patients. METHODS: Patients presenting for permanent hemodialysis access without a suitable upper extremity vein for autogenous access identified by duplex ultrasound mapping and those with repeated prosthetic access failures were considered candidates for SFV ACCESS. Ankle-brachial indices were obtained, a

The Role of Axillary Lymph Node Dissection Width and Radiotherapy in Axillary Vein Pathologies and Psychophysical Outcomes in Breast Cancer.

Background and Objectives: Lymphedema is one of the most important morbid complications of modified radical mastectomy (MRM) surgery. It can cause limb movement restriction and psychosocial deformities in some patients. This study aimed to determine and compare the physiological and pathological changes that develop in the axillary venous structures in patients who underwent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). Materials and Methods: Patients diagnosed with breast cancer who underwent MRM and breast-conserving surgery (BCS) plus SLNB between 2017 and 202

A novel technique of axillary vein puncture involving peripherally inserted central venous catheters for a small basilic vein.

PURPOSE: Peripherally inserted central venous catheters are some of the most useful devices for vascular access used globally. Peripherally inserted central venous catheters have a low rate of fatal mechanical complications when compared to non-tunnel central venous catheters. However, as peripherally inserted central venous catheter access requires a smaller vein, there is a high risk of thrombosis. The axillary vein (confluence of the basilic and brachial veins) can serve as an access for cannulation. Moreover, as this vein is larger than the basilic or brachial vein, it might be a superior

Optimized Axillary Vein Technique versus Subclavian Vein Technique in Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Device Implantation: A Randomized Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: The conventional venous access for cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) is the subclavian vein, which is often accompanied by high complication rate. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of optimized axillary vein technique. METHODS: A total of 247 patients undergoing CIED implantation were included and assigned to the axillary vein group or the subclavian vein group randomly. Success rate of puncture and complications in the perioperative period and follow-ups were recorded. RESULTS: The overall success rate (95.7% vs. 96.0%) and one-time su

The axillary vein and its tributaries: anatomical variations, morphometry, and surgical implications.

INTRODUCTION: Precise morphometric data of the axillary vein (AV) network are essential for surgical and endovascular safety. This study aims to characterize main-trunk morphometry, formation patterns (Types A/B), tributary variations, and the lateral venous channel (LVC), providing an anatomical framework potentially relevant to surgical navigation and vascular access. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty formalin-fixed upper extremities from adult whole-body donors were dissected. Two independent investigators measured external venous diameters at standardized landmarks and the AV to coracoid apex

Axillary-coronary artery bypass using a vein graft via the suprasternal route.

Redo coronary artery bypass grafting after an in-situ right internal thoracic artery graft to the left anterior descending artery is challenging. For such a 52-year-old male patient with a history of mediastinitis, we performed redo bypass grafting of the right coronary artery using a saphenous vein graft and xiphoid resection via the suprasternal route with the left axillary artery as the inflow source and the graft were patent. The axillary artery is an inflow source for patients with inaccessible aorta. Combining the suprasternal route with a xiphoid resection provides a bail-out option.

[Safety of axillary and subclavian vein cannulation using real-time ultrasound guidance].

BACKGROUND: The safety of real-time ultrasound-guided subclavian and axillary vein cannulation as opposed to ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein cannulation has not received much attention. We retrospectively compared the safety and value of real-time ultrasound-guided cannulation in the subclavian and axillary veins with those of the landmark method. METHODS: We divided 355 patients who had undergone central venous cannulation of the subclavian and axillary vein under local anesthesia into a group that had undergone real-time ultrasound-guided cannulation (Group U), and another group can

Meigs syndrome presenting with axillary vein thrombosis and lymphadenopathy: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Meigs syndrome is a rare condition, occurring in less than 1% of ovarian tumors and has the characteristic features of a benign ovarian tumor, ascites and a pleural effusion. We present a case of Meigs syndrome in a young patient presenting initially with an axillary vein thrombosis and local lymphadenopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a short history of right arm swelling and shortness of breath as a result of an axillary vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus. The initial assessment also demonstrated right axillary and subclavian lymphadenopa

Ultrasound imaging of the axillary vein--anatomical basis for central venous access.

BACKGROUND: The central veins that are usually cannulated are the jugular, subclavian, femoral and brachial. If subclavian catheterization is difficult using surface landmark techniques, we now use ultrasound to catheterize the infraclavicular axillary vein. This approach is not widely used and the ultrasound appearance has not been formally described. We examined the anatomical relationships of the axillary vessels to guide safe cannulation of the axillary vein. METHOD: In 50 subjects, we used ultrasound to examine the infraclavicular regions from below the mid-clavicular point and at 2 cm a

Selective low-dose thrombolysis in patients with an axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis.

The treatment of axillary-subclavian vein thrombosis is still controversial. Development of a post-phlebitic syndrome in patients treated conservatively occurs in many patients. Therefore more aggressive treatment is advocated. We report six patients treated with selective low-dose streptokinase infusion with excellent short-term results. Major complications did not occur. Recanalisation was observed in all patients. Long-term results are not yet available.

Subclavian and Axillary Vein Access Versus Cephalic Vein Cutdown for Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device Implantation: A Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of venous access techniques for cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation. BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive transvenous access is a fundamental step during implantation of CIEDs. However, the preferred venous access is still subject to ongoing debate, and the decision depends on patient characteristics and operator experience. METHODS: A comprehensive search for studies comparing subclavian vein puncture (SVP) and axillary vein puncture (AVP) versus cephalic vein cutdown (CVC) for CIED implantation was performed

Axillary right vein percutaneous ballooning in hemodialysis catheter replacement: A case report.

Reliable vascular access remains a key point of hemodialysis therapy although each patient's journey through chronic kidney disease is unique. The 2019 Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI) vascular access guidelines introduced a patient-centered approach, emphasizing individualized vascular access planning based on each patient's clinical characteristics, comorbidities, life expectancy, and treatment goals. Vascular access troubleshooting is required when the creation of a native arteriovenous fistula or prosthetic graft is not feasible, necessitating the use of tunneled central

Axillary vein puncture without contrast venography for pacemaker and defibrillator leads implantation.

BACKGROUND: Axillary vein puncture has been demonstrated to be an effective method for pacemaker and defibrillator leads implantation, without the complications encountered with the standard intrathoracic approach. OBJECTIVE: Different techniques have been adopted for the cannulation of the axillary vein. We report our experience using the outer edge of the first rib below the inferior border of the clavicle as fluoroscopic landmark. METHOD: A subcutaneous pocket is created 1-cm medially and parallel to the delto-pectoral groove and 2 cm below the clavicle. An 18-gauge needle from the upper

Arterial trauma during ultrasound-guided axillary vein puncture for endocardial lead placement.

The axillary vein is an accepted route for gaining central venous access, particularly for pacing and implantable cardioverter defibrillator leads, with ultrasound guidance a useful way of facilitating venous puncture. We report a series of cases demonstrating the important complication of inadvertent arterial injury with this technique.

Axillary/subclavian vein puncture using navigation by parallax with an imaginary target.

BACKGROUND: The parallax principles allow the relative positions of two overlapping objects with respect to the receiver of a two dimensional image to be determined, and can reliably navigate an object to a target in three dimensional space. Navigation by parallax can direct axillary/subclavian vein puncture under fluoroscopy with a guide wire inside the vein. The axillary/subclavian vein has a constant relationship with the first rib and an imaginary target just cranial and lateral to the middle part of the first rib may serve as a surrogate position marker for the vein adequate for guiding p
