A 57-year-old woman with a liver injury was referred to our hospital. She had a history of heavy alcohol consumption and had developed severe alcoholic hepatitis. Blood cultures revealed bacteremia caused by Bacillus cereus. The patient was treated with short-term steroid therapy for liver injury and vancomycin administration for B. cereus sepsis, which led to recovery. The findings in the present case suggest the need for empirical therapy with vancomycin in patients with severe alcoholic hepatitis and suspected B. cereus infection.

Pneumococci have been shown to induce granulocytopenia and pulmonary leukostasis which might contribute to morbidity and mortality in pneumococcal sepsis. Bacterial strain Exiguobacterium sp. ZM-2 isolated from agricultural soil irrigated with tannery effluents, was examined for its resistance to hexavalent chromium. Exiguobacterium sp. Eighteen cases of culture-proven Bacillus endophthalmitis were reviewed. The majority (13/18) were secondary to penetrating ocular trauma. Others were secondary to corneal ulcer (1), postoperative (1), and endogenous (3). Bacillus cereus was the most commonly identified species (12/18).
