Human Innate Immune Cells Respond Differentially to Poly-γ-Glutamic Acid Polymers from Bacillus anthracis and Nonpathogenic Bacillus Species.

The poly-γ-glutamic acid (PGA) capsule produced by Bacillus anthracis is composed entirely of d-isomer glutamic acid, whereas nonpathogenic Bacillus species produce mixed d-, l-isomer PGAs. To determine if B. anthracis PGA confers a pathogenic advantage over other PGAs, we compared the responses of human innate immune cells to B. anthracis PGA and PGAs from nonpathogenic B. subtilis subsp. chungkookjang and B. licheniformis Monocytes and immature dendritic cells (iDCs) responded differentially to the PGAs, with B. anthracis PGA being least stimulatory and B. licheniformis PGA most stimulatory.

Establishment of a degenerate primer-based multiplex qPCR method for sensitive detection of Gas-Producing Bacillus spp. in soy sauce.

Current quality control measures for thermally processed foods predominantly rely on reactive post-spoilage analyses rather than proactive monitoring of specific spoilage organisms. In this study, 64 gas-producing strains were isolated from swollen bagged soy sauce and identified as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus velezensis, and Bacillus licheniformis. Notably, B. velezensis was associated with gas spoilage in soy sauce for the first time. Inoculation experiments conducted directly in soy sauce confirmed species-specific gas production within 1-3 days. Among the tested

Functional and genomic characterization of ligninolytic Bacillus strains for improved jute fibre delignification.

Lignin, the second most abundant biopolymer on Earth, imparting rigidity to plant cell walls but poses a challenge in the processing of lignocellulosic biomass such as jute (Corchorus spp.). Compared to other bast fibers such as flax and ramie, jute fiber has a very high lignin content (13.3% to 15%), hindering its use in the textile sector. Although chemical methods for lignin degradation are widely used, they are environmentally damaging and economically unfeasible. Consequently, bacterial lignin-degrading enzymes, especially those derived from Bacillus species, have attracted interest owing

UV Resistance of bacteria from the Kenyan Marine cyanobacterium Moorea producens.

UV resistance of bacteria isolated from the marine cyanobacterium Moorea producens has not been observed previously, findings which highlight how unsafe germicidal UV irradiation for sterilization of air, food, and water could be. Further, UV resistance of Bacillus licheniformis is being observed for the first time. This study focused on bacteria isolated from the marine cyanobacterium M. producens collected off the Kenyan coast at Shimoni, Wasini, Kilifi, and Mida. UV irradiance of isolates (302 nm, 70 W/m2 , 0-1 hr) established B. licheniformis as the most UV resistant strain, with the follo

Harnessing the thermotolerant methylotroph Bacillus methanolicus for methanol-based synthetic L-proline production.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus methanolicus MGA3 is a thermotolerant methylotroph that utilizes methanol, a renewable C₁ substrate, as its sole carbon and energy source. The strain naturally overproduces and secretes L-glutamate, making it a promising platform for engineering pathways toward L-glutamate-derived amino acids such as L-proline, which has applications in nutrition, stress protection, and industry. RESULTS: Heterologous expression of an osmotic stress-responsive L-proline biosynthetic operon from the mesophile Bacillus licheniformis in the thermotolerant B. methanolicus strain MGA3 did not

Cr(VI) removal performance from wastewater by microflora isolated from tannery effluents in a semi-arid environment: a SEM, EDX, FTIR and zeta potential study.

Hexavalent chromium removal from the environment remains a crucial worldwide challenge. To address this issue, microbiological approaches are amongst the straightforward strategies that rely mainly on the bacteria's and fungi's survival mechanisms upon exposure to toxic metals, such as reduction, efflux system, uptake, and biosorption. In this work, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential measurements were used to investigate the ability of chromium adsorption by Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus megate

Dietary Probiotic Supplementation Suppresses Subclinical Necrotic Enteritis in Broiler Chickens in a Microbiota-Dependent Manner.

BACKGROUND: Chicken meat is one of the most consumed meats worldwide and poultry production is increasing at an exponential rate. Reducing antibiotic usage has resulted in the recurrence of subclinical necrotic enteritis again and influenced global poultry production. Probiotics are potential antibiotic substitutes that can be used to prevent subclinical necrotic enteriti. However, the precise mechanism of action of probiotics and information on which gut microbes confer this efficacy remain elusive. METHODS AND RESULTS: The subclinical necrotic enteritis animal model was used to reveal the m
