Nontuberculous, nonsyphilitic intracranial bacterial infections in HIV-positive individuals may be nonspecific presentations of unusual organisms, such as R. equi, B. henselae, Nocardia sp. or L. monocytogenes. In addition, more common organisms, such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, or Salmonella sp. may cause an unusually severe infection. In general, the imaging appearance of these bacterial infections is similar to that in immunocompetent individuals.

This paper describes a microbiological study of 84 young adult men with clinical otitic infections. Gram-negative aerobic bacilli were frequently isolated from these patients diagnosed as having otitis externa or chronic suppurative otitis media, of which Pseudomonas species predominated. Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermidis and aerobic Corynebacterium species (diphtheroids) were also found. About 40% of ear infections were attributed to otomycoses, chiefly from Aspergillus species and Candida parapsilosis. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the bacterial isolates revealed that Pseudomon

Certain infections, such as UTI, may have an increased incidence during pregnancy owing to physiological changes. Between 2 and 10% of pregnant women have covert or asymptomatic bacteriuria which is associated with an increased incidence of acute symptomatic UTI in later pregnancy if left untreated. Thus antenatal screening to detect the presence of bacteriuria is justified. Most women will remain abacteriuric throughout the remainder of pregnancy after a single course of antibiotic therapy but a small percentage will fail to respond or have recurrent UTIs. Maternal infection with certain orga

Imipenem was administered intravenously with cilastatin to patients with suspected or documented significant infections. The mean peak serum level of imipenem 30 min after infusion of a 500 mg dose was 18.4 micrograms/ml, and the mean trough level (30 min before infusion) was 2.4 micrograms/ml. The organisms isolated before therapy included Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and anaerobes. The response rate in 25 assessable patients was 96%, with 40% experiencing a complete cure and 56% improvement. Therapy failed in only one instance because an is

Bacterial infections are frequent events in premature and newborn infants. The reason is a defective specific and nonspecific defence of bacterial organisms. Some immunoglobulins like IgM and IgA including secretory IgA are absent. Premature infants also show a decreased level of IgG. Cellular immunity is anatomically intact but functionally defective. A number of complement factors are lacking, the activation of the alternative pathway is impaired. Newborn infants with perinatal problems like asphyxia or difficult delivery, show defects of leucocyte function like decreased deformability, defe

Bacteriologic, mycologic, and serologic investigations of cows and calves and three experiments with rabbits were carried out to shed light on the bacteriology and mycology of the intrauterine infections in cows. The following organisms were isolated from the investigated cows that exhibited disturbances in their reproduction, and had abortions, or gave birth to calves that were affected with diseases or died: Escherichia coli (17.84%), association of bacteria (7.64%); Vibrio genitalis (3.86%); Streptococcus sp. (2.78%); moulds (2.54%); Staphylococcus aureus (2.20%); Proteus sp. (1.62%); Staph

A brief review of the special aspects concerning the use and selection of chemotherapeutic agents and antibiotics in bacterial infections occurring in gynaecology both specifically and generally. In case of severe bacterial infections such as sepsis it is recommended to combine two antibodies (e.g. beta-lactam antibiotics with aminoglycosides or several beta-lactam antibiotics together). Special attention is given to the particularly effective broad-spectrum penicillins and cephalosporins as well as to the aminoglycoside antibiotics etc. Individual well-tried antibiotics are briefly characteri

Ceftriaxone is a new semisynthetic cephalosporin with broad-spectrum in vitro activity and an unusually long serum half-life. The clinical efficacy of ceftriaxone was evaluated in 35 infections in 34 patients; 12 of these patients had skin and soft tissue infections, 10 had infections of the urinary tract, 8 had pneumonia, 2 had biliary tract infections, 1 had sinusitis, 1 had diverticulitis, and 1 had a retroperitoneal abscess. Of the 35 infections, 9 were bacteremic. The bacteria isolated included Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus faec

Unfortunately, there is no general consensus as to how long patients with bacteriuria or urinary tract infections should be monitored and certainly there is no agreement on how long recurrent episodes should be treated beyond ten days to two weeks. The most important points to remember are: 1. Culture the urine both at the time of therapy and during follow-up. The patient should be examined periodically for the presence of bacteruria. If bacteria cannot be eradicated, at least the physician is aware of the organism most likely causing the patient's symptoms. 2. Do not subject the patient with

Bacteremia caused by Gram-negative enteric organisms accounts for the majority of instances of shock complicating bacterial infection. Control of the infection and maintenance of normal blood volume constitute the primary considerations in immediate treatment. The use of three or four doses of corticosteroid agent over a period of 24 hours is regarded as advantageous for routine treatment. Conservative and selective use of isoproterenol and phentolamine are justified for management of patients who do not respond to the administration of bactericidal drugs and volume repletion. Levarterenol and

Blood coagulation is essential for stopping bleeding but also drives thromboembolic disorders. Factor XII (FXII)-triggered coagulation promotes thrombosis while being dispensable for hemostasis, making it a potential anticoagulant target. However, its physiological role remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that FXII-driven coagulation enhances innate immunity by trapping pathogens and restricting bacterial infection in mice. Streptococcus pneumoniae infection was more severe in FXII-deficient (F12-/-) mice, with increased pulmonary bacterial burden, systemic spread, and mortality. Similarly,

Pneumonia, as well as other types of acute and chronic lung injuries, remain the leading causes of death in individuals living with HIV. Individuals with HIV who are on antiretroviral therapy continue to have a greater risk for pneumonia, including bacterial and mycobacterial infections. Alveolar macrophages and lung epithelial cells constitute the first line of host defense against invading pathogens. The predisposition of individuals living with HIV to infections despite ante-retroviral therapy is mechanistically related to HIV pro-viruses integrating into host cells, including airway epithe

Zoonotic infections can result in life-threatening complications that can manifest with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH)/cytokine storm syndrome (CSS). Bacteria constitute the largest group of zoonotic infection-related HLH cases. The growing list of zoonotic bacterial infections associated with HLH/CSS include Brucella spp., Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia, Coxiella burnetii, Mycobacterium spp., and Bartonella spp. Patients most commonly present with fever, cytopenias, hepatosplenomegaly, myalgias, and less frequently with rash, jaundice, and lymphadenopathy.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) represents a condition in which the normal protective Lactobacilli, especially those that produce H2O2, are replaced by high quantities of facultative anaerobes, leading to gynecologic and obstetric post-operative complications. BV is an important cause of obstetric and gynecological adverse sequelae and it could lead to an increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, genital herpes, Chlamydia, Trichomonas, and human immunodeficiency virus. Herein, we reviewed bacterial vaginosis and its association with post-operative pelvic infecti

The pandemic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected millions of people worldwide. To date, there are no proven effective therapies for this virus. Efforts made to develop antiviral strategies for the treatment of COVID-19 are underway. Respiratory viral infections, such as influenza, predispose patients to co-infections and these lead to increased disease severity and mortality. Numerous types of antibiotics such as azithromycin have been employed for the prevention and treatment of bacterial co-infection and se

Lyme disease diagnosis is currently based on serology - an indirect diagnostic method - as laboratory cultures are fastidious. The only direct diagnostic method that can be useful with some specimens (cutaneous biopsies or aspiration fluid) is PCR. We aimed to detail the main limitations of serology and PCR testing in the diagnosis of bacterial infections. Limitations are supported by examples from the recent history of microbiology. The main limitation of bacterial serology is the presence of numerous cross-reactions due to many genes that are common to various bacterial species. Some serolog
