Retinoids have been used for years as monotherapy and/or in combination for treatment and suppression of cutaneous malignancies in patients with basal cell nevus syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosum, or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We report 4 cases with BCC confirmed by histopathology who were treated by short-term systemic acitretin combined with retinoic acid 0.1% cream. The 4 cases with BCC showed good response to the treatment without severe adverse effects during treatment and follow-up. The finding suggests that acitretin may be an appropriate treatment option

Here we review recent insights in the genetics of skin cancer susceptibility as gleaned from studies of three hereditary syndromes: basal cell nevus syndrome, familial melanoma/dysplastic nevus syndrome, and xeroderma pigmentosum. We provide a brief synopsis of the recent findings related to these syndromes in an attempt to illustrate several emerging themes in the genetics of skin cancer. These themes include 1) the recent identification of multiple cancer susceptibility genes that occur in a myriad of cellular regulatory pathways; 2) the relative specificity of certain regulatory pathways to

The odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is a jaw cyst with a proclivity for local invasion and recurrence. This 20-year retrospective study was conducted to evaluate methods of treatment and recurrence rates. Forty-nine patients were identified with an average age at presentation of 39.5 years. The molar region of either the mandible or maxilla was the principal primary location; the maxillary antrum was also a common site. The majority of cysts were unilocular and associated with adjacent dentition. Initial therapy was typically enucleation with or without extraction of associated teeth; seven cases

A case of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is presented and its varied clinical manifestations and multi-system involvement are emphasised. Our case presented with an early onset of symptoms but sought medical help later on for progressively increasing jaw swelling and pain. On further evaluation, multiple pigmented skin papules, palmar pits, multiple jaw cysts, skull bone osteoporosis, bifid ribs and kyphosis were present. Systemic involvement was minimal. There was no significant family history.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) also known as the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome or the nevus-Bifid rib syndrome is an inherited autosomal dominant syndrome. It is caused by genetic alteration produced by a mutation in the "patched" tumor suppressor gene. This rare syndrome is characterized by basal cell carcinoma of skin, multiple odontogenic keratocyst and bifid ribs along with other features such as hypertelorism, sex organ abnormalities, palmar and/or plantar pits and calcification of falx cerebri. Early detection and treatment are essential for patients suffering from this syndrome. Onl

A man in his early 60s with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and an extensive history of non-melanoma skin cancer presented with multiple pearly, erythematous papules on his face, head, trunk and extremities, clinically consistent with basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Due to the numerous BCC and history of multiple and early-onset BCC, examination was concerning for a hereditary BCC syndrome. Subsequent histopathology confirmed BCC. Genetic testing was negative for basal cell nevus syndrome and clinical findings were inconsistent with other known hereditary BCC syndromes. There have been reports of

Cutaneous basal and squamous cell carcinomas are among the most frequent malignancies in the white population, with the annual incidence estimates ranging from 1 million to 3.5 million cases in the United States. These tumors can occur either sporadically or in the context of hereditary genodermatoses with cancer predisposition, such as basal cell nevus syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosum, epidermolysis bullosa, or oculocutaneous albinism. Different genes and signaling pathways have been shown to play a central role in the development and growth of these tumors. This article overviews the clinical

Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent of all cancers. Its incidence has risen those last decades because of the increase in sun exposure habits. People with light skin complexion are particularly at risk. Ionizing radiations, arsenicism, various genodermatoses (Gorlin syndrome, xeroderma pigmentosum, nevus sebaceous) are other pre-disposing factors. Basal cell carcinoma usually present as small lesion with a pearly border and telangiectasias. Other clinical types must also be recognized such as the nodular, the infiltrative, the superficial and the pigmented forms. They are usually located

This is an observational study demonstrating the effectiveness of pulsed dye laser (PDL) as a treatment of basal cell carcinomas (BCC) in patients with Gorlin Syndrome. Over 200 BCCs localized to the head, neck, trunk, and extremities of a patient suffering from Gorlin Syndrome were successfully treated with PDL without subsequent scarring. PDL is a simple and rapid modality to destroy BCCs arising in patients with Gorlin Syndrome resulting in a preferable cosmetic outcome.

Nevus-like basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disease characterized by the occurrence of multiple maxillofacial keratocysts, basal cell carcinoma, child medulloblastoma, and various skeletal and soft tissue dysplasia. In 2020, a patient with NBCCS dominated by facial basal cell carcinoma was admitted to Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. The patient was an elderly woman. Ten years ago, the systemic mass appeared, especially on the face, but it was not treated. Later, these masses gradually increased in volume and number, and showed invasive properties

Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most commonly occurring malignancies in the United States, with over 1 million cases annually. Several subsets of patients within the general population are particularly susceptible to the development of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. These groups include patients with xeroderma pigmentosum, basal cell nevus syndrome, epidermodysplasia verruciformis, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as organ transplant recipients. Organ transplant recipients are the largest and best characterized of these subsets of patients. Review of the

The Hedgehog signaling pathway has been identified as fundamentally important to normal embryonic development in living organisms ranging from fruit flies to mammals. Postdevelopmentally, it remains active in hair and skin cells. Abnormal activation of components of the Hedgehog pathway--specifically, resulting from mutations in the Patched 1 gene--is associated with the development of basal cell carcinoma, as well as several other cancers, including medulloblastoma. Patched 1 gene mutation has also been identified as the underlying mechanism in most cases of Gorlin syndrome (also known as bas

BACKGROUND: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a rare genetic disorder associated with basal cell carcinomas (BCC), skeletal anomalies, and jaw cysts, and a number of ocular abnormalities. We describe a case of a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with NBCCS found to have several ophthalmic manifestations including a myelinated retinal nerve fiber. We conducted a literature review targeting the ocular and systemic manifestations of NBCCS, with a focus on the ophthalmic findings that have not been well characterized.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a literature search from 1960 to 2021

AIMS: The detection of odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) in the oral cavity is one of the main criteria for the clinical manifestation of Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome - NBCCS). From a clinical point of view, we distinguish between "syndromic" and "sporadic" OKC. Syndromic cysts, often multifocal, may be an accidental finding on X-ray examination. They can manifest gradually depending on the development of permanent dentition. Sporadic cysts are rather solitary lesions with clinical manifestation in adulthood.
METHODS: Mutations in the PTCH1 gene are thought to be th
