Energy Flux in the Cochlea: Evidence Against Power Amplification of the Traveling Wave.

Traveling waves in the inner ear exhibit an amplitude peak that shifts with frequency. The peaking is commonly believed to rely on motile processes that amplify the wave by inserting energy. We recorded the vibrations at adjacent positions on the basilar membrane in sensitive gerbil cochleae and tested the putative power amplification in two ways. First, we determined the energy flux of the traveling wave at its peak and compared it to the acoustic power entering the ear, thereby obtaining the net cochlear power gain. For soft sounds, the energy flux at the peak was 1 ± 0.6 dB less than the mi

Mass and Stiffness Impact on the Middle Ear and the Cochlear Partition.

Mass and stiffness affect on the peculiar characteristics of transmission of the middle ear and the distinctive behavior of the cochlear mechanics. Applying the principle of the mass and stiffness, the band-pass characteristic transfer function of the middle ear has been explained. The greatest transfer function of the middle ear, approximately 24-29 dB, is observed at 1-2 kHz in both cat and human species. However, at lower frequencies, the transfer function was disturbed by the stiffness of the middle ear primarily due to middle ear cavity. At higher frequencies, the transfer function was di

A comparative immunoelectron microscopic study of typical and atypical cases of pemphigoid.

Using an immunoelectron microscopic technique we have compared the ultrastructural localization of IgG and complement (C3) in the basement membrane zone of three typical cases of bullous pemphigoid and three atypical variant cases (nodular, polymorphic and localized pemphigoid, respectively). There was no significant difference in the in vivo ultrastructural localization of these immunoreactants between the typical and the atypical cases of pemphigoid. In all cases IgG and C3 were detected between the basilar surface of the basal keratinocytes and the basal lamina. Moreover, the in vitro bindi

Anatomical basis of a congenital hearing impairment: basilar papilla dysplasia in the Belgian Waterslager canary.

Recent investigations into the anatomy of the inner ear of Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC) have demonstrated myriad malformations associated with dysgenesis of the pars inferior of the otocyst. In those studies, the surface anatomy of BWC's basilar papilla and sacculus was examined utilizing scanning electron microscopy. In the present investigation, we utilized both light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to describe the cross sectional anatomical pathology of the BWC's basilar papilla. Examination of the BWC's organ of Corti revealed numerous dysmorphologies: 1) hair cells f

Mechanically evoked tinnitus after cochlear implantation with preservation of residual hearing.

In the recent past, inclusion criteria for cochlear implant surgery expanded to patients with ever more residual acoustic hearing in the low frequencies. By applying the meticulous hearing preservation surgical strategy and specifically designed atraumatic electrode arrays, residual hearing can be preserved to a meaningful extent in a large majority of patients. In this paper, we describe two female patients suffering from mechanically evoked tinnitus after hearing preservation cochlear implantation surgery with MEDEL flex electrodes. The occurrence of audible perceptions through mechanical st

Micro-magnetic resonance imaging of the inner ear in the guinea pig.

We applied a magnetic resonance microscopy at 7.05 T with a gradient coil unit to image the fine structure of the guinea pig cochlea. First, a three-dimensional MR image of the surface of the cochlea was obtained to select the location of cross-sectional images. Then, cross-sectional images of the basal turn, the second turn and the apical turn of the cochlea were obtained. Based upon the different protein concentrations of the endolymph vs the perilymph, the scala vestibuli, scala tympani and the cochlear duct could be clearly distinguished. This allowed a determination of the location of bot

Posterior cerebral artery P1 segment at the stoma during endoscopic third ventriculostomy in adults.

OBJECTIVES: A serious catastrophic complication of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is basilar artery (BA) damage. Although the BA has been discussed as the cause of haemorrhage and even pseudoaneurysm, variations of the posterior cerebral artery proximal segment (P1) and its protrusion into the third ventricle floor have not been emphasised. A series of cases are reported in which the P1 segment was located at the stoma during an ETV and was at risk of perforation. Precautionary techniques for complication avoidance are described. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of all ET

Mathematical and computational modelling of cochlear responses to environmental noise exposure: A preliminary multiscale computational study.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental noise is recognised by the World Health Organization and the European Environment Agency as a major environmental risk factor. However, the biophysical mechanisms linking acoustic exposure to cochlear mechanical and neural responses remain incompletely characterised. OBJECTIVE: This preliminary study organises established cochlear modelling approaches within a multiscale computational framework to examine how environmental sound levels are translated into passive mechanical responses and simulated neural activity. METHODS: Passive in silico simulations were perfor

Sensorineural hearing loss due to cochlear otospongiosis: theoretical considerations of etiology.

Several theories have been advanced to explain the sensorineural hearing loss that occurs in patients with otospongiosis: toxic substances produced by the otospongiotic focus; vascular shunts betwen the inner ear vessels and the otospongiotic focus; and atrophy of the organ of Corti and stria vascularis due to unknown causes. Presented here is yet another theory: impingement upon the cochlear walls by the otospongiotic focus, causing a narrowing of the lumen of the cochlea and distortion of the basilar membrane.

Frequency-specific Electrocochleography and Traveling Wave Time as a Clinical Test for Menière's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Menière's disease is a clinical entity with no definitive objective testing. It has been hypothesized that underlying endolymphatic hydrops stiffens the basilar membrane leading to increased speed of the acoustic stimulus, therefore traveling wave velocity has been proposed as an objective test to aid in the diagnosis. The objective of this study is to compare electrocochleography frequency-specific action potential latency, basilar membrane traveling wave time, and summation to action potential (SP/AP) ratio in Menière's and non-Menière's patients. METHODS: Tympanic electrococh

Immunohistochemical evaluation of c-erbB-2 oncogene expression in ductal carcinoma in situ and atypical ductal hyperplasia of the breast.

Cases of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) of the breast were examined for expression of the protein product of the c-erbB-2 (neu, HER-2) oncogene using two different polyclonal antibodies via an avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method on formalin- or Bouin'-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. Fifty-five percent (18/33) of DCIS and 10% (2/21) of ADH were positive. Significant c-erbB-2 expression in DCIS was generally divided on histologic grounds: ten of ten comedocarcinomas showed strong membrane staining, while only one of 14 small cell DCIS cases (micropapilla

Cochlear Implantation With a Novel Long Straight Electrode: the Insertion Results Evaluated by Imaging and Histology in Human Temporal Bones.

HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the insertion results of a novel straight array (EVO) by detailed imaging and subsequent histology in human temporal bones (TB). BACKGROUND: The main focuses of modern cochlear implant surgery are to prevent damage to the intracochlear structures and to preserve residual hearing. This is often achievable with new atraumatic electrode arrays in combination with meticulous surgical techniques. METHODS: Twenty fresh-frozen TBs were implanted with the EVO. Pre- and postoperative cone beam computed tomography scans were reconstructed and fused for an artifact-free represen

Central nervous system changes associated with noise-induced hearing loss: an electron microscopic and freeze-fracture study of the chick nucleus magnocellularis.

This investigation assessed the effects of noise-induced hearing loss on the avian nucleus magnocellularis, the homologue of the mammalian cochlear nucleus. Fifteen-day-old chicks were exposed to high-intensity broad-band noise (132 dBA) for 24 to 72 hours. Hearing loss was documented with auditory brain-stem response recordings and scanning electron microscopy of the basilar papilla. Nucleus magnocellularis was assessed with thin-section electron microscopy and freeze-fracture techniques. Freeze-fracture preparations of noise-exposed animals showed a decrease in synaptic vesicle fusion sites

Cochlear blood flow. Effect of noise.

Cochlear blood flow as investigated in anesthetized gerbils exposed to high-frequency (10 to 40 kHz), high-intensity (113 dB sound pressure level noise for 13 minutes. Blood flow was measured using a newly developed technique, which combines the surface preparation dissecting of the cochlea with the microsphere method. Our experiments indicate that short-lasting, high-intensity noise exposure causes a highly significant elevation of the blood flow in noise-exposed inner-ear areas. On the exposed side, blood flow increase was observed in the first turn of the stria vascularis-supralis ossea. On

A micromechanical contribution to cochlear tuning and tonotopic organization.

The response properties of hair cells and nerve fibers in the alligator lizard cochlea are frequency selective and tonotopically organized with longitudinal position in the organ. The lengths of the hair-cell hair bundles also vary monotonically with longitudinal position. In this study, quantitative measurements were made of the motion of individual hair bundles in an excised preparation of the cochlea stimulated at auditory frequencies. The angular displacement of hair bundles is frequency selective and tonotopically organized, demonstrating the existence of a micromechanical tuning mechanis

Relations between notched-noise suppressed TEOAE and the psychoacoustical critical bandwidth.

Narrow-band transitory evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) were recorded for nine normal hearing subjects in the presence of a broadband tone complex suppressor. Introducing a spectral notch at the frequency of the narrow-band stimulus causes the suppression effect to decrease, the more so the wider the notch. This decrease in suppression permits an estimate of the size of one critical band. One advantage of this approach is that no active participation of the subjects is required. The estimated critical bandwidth is then compared with independent estimates based on a simultaneous masking exp

Acoustic-reflex activity and behavioral thresholds following exposure to noise.

The relationships between properties of the acoustic reflex and temporary threshold shift (TTS) were examined in eight subjects exposed to a 95 dB SPL, 1.0-kHz octave-band noise for 4 h. The specific pattern of TTS obtained from this exposure was consistent with the expected sensitivity changes along the cochlear partition. Maximum decrease in behavioral thresholds was noted at 1.4 kHz with significant TTS also occurring at 2.0 and 4.0 kHz. Behavioral threshold at 0.5 kHz, one octave below the center frequency of exposure, was not affected. Significant reflex threshold shift (RTS) occurred at

The frequency response and other properties of single fibres in the guinea-pig cochlear nerve.

1. Micro-electrode recordings were obtained from over 100 single fibres in the cochlear nerve of the pentobarbitone or urethane anaesthetized guinea-pig. The acoustic system was calibrated at the tympanic membrane and threshold sound level measurements so corrected.2. The minimum thresholds of the fibres approached with 10-20 dB of the behavioural thresholds reported in the literature. Exceptions to this were fibres from preparations where there was evidence of malfunction of the cochlea either from abnormally low perfusion or local damage, and a few high frequency fibres. With these high thre

Attenuation of basilar artery spasm after experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage in rabbit by potassium channel activator cromakalim--a preliminary result.

Cerebral vasospasm associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) remains a major complication in patients suffering from SAH. Regulation of membrane potential of arterial smooth muscle through activation or inhibition of potassium (K+) channel activity provides an important mechanism to dilate or constrict arteries. The present study examined the effect of a K+ channel activator, cromakalim, on cerebral vasospasm following experimental SAH. By the route of topical application and intra-arterial injection, basilar arteries were exposed transclivally and measured on-line using videomi

Effect of lymph composition on an in vitro preparation of the alligator lizard cochlea.

The effects of different artificial lymphs on the cochlear duct of the alligator lizard were studied in an in vitro preparation. The duct was dissected and cemented to the glass floor of a chamber that had been filled with an artificial lymph. The vestibular membrane was removed and latex beads (1-5 microns in diameter) were allowed to settle on the endolymphatic surface of the duct. During perfusion with an artificial lymph solution, the positions of beads were measured and video images of the duct were obtained. Artificial lymphs were isosmotic and included artificial endolymph (AE), artific
