Cumulative incidence of femoral localized periosteal thickening (beaking) preceding atypical femoral fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

UNLABELLED: The incidence of localized periosteal thickening (LPT, also termed beaking) of the lateral cortex that often precedes an atypical femoral fracture (AFF) was not high in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but incomplete AFFs developed in two patients. Higher-dose prednisolone was a significant risk factor for LPT in patients with RA. INTRODUCTION: Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are stress fractures; bisphosphonate (BP) use is a major risk factor for the development of such fractures. Localized periosteal thickening (LPT, also termed beaking) of the lateral cortex often prec

Directional mapping of DNA nicking in ejaculated and cauda epididymidal spermatozoa of the short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus: Monotremata).

Prototherian spermatozoa are unique amongst the Mammalia in terms of their filiform morphology, tandem arrangement of chromosomes and formation of sperm bundles. In the present study, we provide observations of echidna spermatozoa and note that the superstructure of the bundle is engineered around the shape of the individual sperm head and that this in turn may be a consequence of the unusual circumferential and helicoidal condensation of the DNA during spermiogenesis. Frozen-thawed ejaculated echidna spermatozoa were incubated and examined for the presence of non-typical DNA conformation by m

From lab to field: Innovative RPA‒CRISPR/Cas12a platform for early short-beak and dwarfism syndrome virus nucleic acids detection.

Short beak and dwarfism syndrome virus (SBDSV) is the causative agent of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS), which is characterized by beak atrophy and dwarfism. SBDS has caused substantial economic losses for waterfowl husbandry industries. To address the urgent need for rapid and accurate SBDSV diagnostics, the study developed a dual-mode detection platform integrating recombinase-aided amplification (RPA) with CRISPR/Cas12a-mediated fluorescence and lateral flow strip readouts. The optimized assay achieved a detection limit of 10 copies/μL. Notably, the platform demonstrated superior s

Investigation and sequence analysis of psittacine beak and feather disease virus and avian polyomavirus from companion birds in Windhoek, Namibia.

The commercial farming and trading of parrots and ornamental birds as companion animals are important economic activities in many countries. Some of the bird species farmed/traded are captured from the wild or are closely related to wild birds and therefore represent a risk of pathogen exchange/introduction. Beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) and avian poliomavirus (APV) are among the viruses with the biggest impact on companion bird populations and have been detected in different hosts worldwide. Despite their relevance for both domesticated and wild birds, our knowledge of BFDV and APV ep

Investigation and Sequence Analysis of Avian Polyomavirus and Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease Virus from Companion Birds in Eastern Turkey.

INTRODUCTION: Avian polyomavirus (APV) and psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV) induce contagious and persistent diseases that affect the beaks, feathers, and immune systems of companion birds. APV causes hepatitis, ascites, hydropericardium, depression, feather disorders, abdominal distension, and potentially death. PBFDV can induce progressive beak deformity, feather dystrophy, and plumage loss. We conducted the first prevalence survey of both APV and PBFDV infections in companion birds in eastern Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 113 fresh dropping samples from apparent

Pathogenicity of a variant goose parvovirus, from short beak and dwarfism syndrome of Pekin ducks, in goose embryos and goslings.

The pathogenicity of a variant goose parvovirus (GPV), isolated from short beak and dwarfism syndrome of Pekin ducks (strain Cherry Valley), was investigated in embryonating goose eggs and goslings. The virus was easily grown in GPV antibody-free goose embryos and caused high mortality and severe lesions of goose embryos, indicating that the variant GPV has good adaptation and high pathogenicity to embryonated goose eggs similar to the classical GPV. Like the third egg-passage virus (strain H) of a classical GPV, the third egg-passage virus (strain JS1) of the variant GPV caused Derzsy's disea

Long-Term Outcomes of Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair Focused on Bird Beak and Oversizing in Blunt Traumatic Thoracic Aortic Injury.

BACKGROUND: The acute aortic arch angle and narrow aortic diameter in young patients may lead to bird-beak configuration and excessive oversizing of the stent graft in thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for blunt traumatic thoracic aortic injury (BTTAI). Little is known about the association of these factors and complications in long-term follow-up. We evaluated the long-term outcomes in terms of complications, reinterventions, and survival, focusing on the effects of bird-beak configuration and oversizing. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included patients who underwent TEVAR

First molecular detection and partial ORF1 characterization of psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV) in domesticated parrots of Northern Vietnam.

Psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV), currently classified within the species Circovirus parrot, is an infectious agent in avian species, particularly psittacine birds. PBFDV is the causative agent of psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD), leading to feather loss, deformed beaks and nails, immunosuppression, and high mortality. However, there is limited information on PBFDV in Vietnam, particularly in domesticated parrots. This study aims to detect and molecularly characterize PBFDV in psittacine birds in Northern Vietnam. Among the 193 psittacine birds tested by conventional

Reproduction and pathogenesis of short beak and dwarfish syndrome in Cherry Valley Pekin ducks infected with the rescued novel goose parvovirus.

Since the outbreak of short beak and dwarfish syndrome (SBDS) in Cherry Valley Pekin ducks in China, novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) has been isolated. Till now, little is known about the NGPV pathogenesis toward Cherry Valley Pekin ducks. Besides, due to detection of duck circovirus co-infection in SBDS clinical cases, whether sole NGPV infection can reproduce all the typical symptoms of SBDS remains unclear. In this study, based on the NGPV isolate SDJN19, an infectious plasmid clone pJNm containing the entire SDJN19 genome was constructed. Transfection of pJNm in embryonated duck eggs resulte

Beaked whale dive behavior and acoustic detection range off Louisiana using three-dimensional acoustic tracking.

Understanding abundance and trends of beaked whales in the heavily industrialized Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico), is critical for management but challenging with visual-based distance-sampling due to their elusive surface behavior. Acoustic-based distance-sampling methods rely on accurate modeling of detection probability as a function of distance from a recorder, requiring population-specific diving and acoustic behavior parameters, which is currently lacking for Gulf populations. To address this, we used passive acoustic tracking with two 4-channel High-Frequency Acoustic Recordin

Assessment of goose-beaked whale responses to mid-frequency active sonar using a hierarchical hidden Markov model.

BACKGROUND: Acoustic disturbance is increasingly recognized as an ecological concern, particularly at sea. In light of marine mammal stranding events associated with use of naval mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS), which often involve goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris), research has sought to detect and characterize Ziphius behavioral responses to MFAS. METHODS: We deployed Sound and Motion Recording and Telemetry (SMRT) tags on 13 Ziphius in the Southern California Bight. The study area includes the United States Navy’s Southern California Anti-submarine Warfare Range (SOAR), and deploy

Genomic Insights Into the Evolutionary History of Berardius Beaked Whales: Speciation Driven by Resource Specialization, Gigantism and Thermal Barriers?

Understanding the diversity of our oceans is fundamental now more than ever as climate change and human activities put increasing pressure on marine species and ecosystems. Beaked whales (family Ziphiidae) are among the most poorly understood marine mammals, in part due to their affinity to offshore underwater canyons and prolonged diving ability. The ziphiid genus Berardius is comprised of three extant species; however, a lack of genomic data results in uncertainties of their evolutionary origin, phylogenetic relationships and the past environmental drivers of speciation and demographic fluct

Prolonged maternal investment in northern bottlenose whales alters our understanding of beaked whale reproductive life history.

Nursing and weaning periods are poorly understood in cetaceans due to the difficulty of assessing underwater behaviour in the wild. However, the onset and completion of weaning are critical turning points for individual development and survival, with implications for a species' life history including reproductive potential. δ15N and δ13C deposited in odontocete teeth annuli provide a lifetime record of diet, offering an opportunity to investigate variation and trends in fundamental biology. While available reproductive parameters for beaked whales have largely been inferred from single records

Prominent hepatic ductular reaction induced by Oschmarinella macrorchis in a Hubbs' beaked whale Mesoplodon carlhubbsi, with biological notes.

Beaked whales are among the least known group of cetaceans, and information regarding their pathology and parasitology is especially scarce. We describe a case of significant parasitism by a trematode found in the liver of an adult male Hubbs' beaked whale Mesoplodon carlhubbsi that stranded in Hokkaido, Japan. Post-mortem examinations revealed a localised area of discolouration restricted to the hilar region of the left hepatic lobe, where spindle-shaped trematodes occupied the dilated and hypertrophic bile ducts. Histologically, the intrahepatic bile ducts were characterised by adenomatous h

Venomics of the beaked sea snake, Hydrophis schistosus: A minimalist toxin arsenal and its cross-neutralization by heterologous antivenoms.

The venom proteome of Hydrophis schistosus (syn: Enhydrina schistosa) captured in Malaysian waters was investigated using reverse-phase HPLC, SDS-PAGE and high-resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The findings revealed a minimalist profile with only 18 venom proteins. These proteins belong to 5 toxin families: three-finger toxin (3FTx), phospholipase A2 (PLA2), cysteine-rich secretory protein (CRISP), snake venom metalloprotease (SVMP) and L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO). The 3FTxs (3 short neurotoxins and 4 long neurotoxins) constitute 70.5% of total venom protein, 55.8% bei

A new brachycladiid species (Digenea) from Gervais' beaked whale Mesoplodon europaeus in north-western Atlantic waters.

A new species of the digenean family Brachycladiidae Odhner, 1905 is described from the bile ducts of a Gervais' beaked whale Mesoplodon europaeus Gervais (Ziphiidae) stranded on the North Atlantic coast of Florida. These parasites were assigned to Brachycladium Looss, 1899 and differed from other species of the genus in the relative size of the oral and ventral suckers, the form and size of the eggs and their extremely small body size. A canonical discriminant analysis was used to examine differences between these specimens and the smallest available individuals of B. atlanticum (Abril, Balbu

Clostridium perfringens septicemia in a long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus capensis: an etiology of gas bubble accumulation in cetaceans.

An adult female long-beaked common dolphin Delphinus capensis live-stranded in La Jolla, California, USA, on July 30, 2012 and subsequently died on the beach. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed gas bubble accumulation in the vasculature, organ parenchyma, mandibular fat pads, and subdermal sheath as well as a gas-filled cavity within the liver, mild caudal abdominal effusion, and fluid in the uterus. Isolation of Brucella ceti from a Long-finned Pilot Whale (Globicephala melas) and a Sowerby's Beaked Whale (Mesoploden bidens).

Brucella ceti is an emerging zoonotic pathogen that has been recovered from several species of cetaceans in the world's oceans over the past 20 yr. We report the recovery of B. ceti from a Sowerby's beaked whale (Mesoploden bidens) and a long-finned pilot whale (Globicehala melas). Recovery from the testis of a long-finned pilot whale provides further evidence of potential for B. ceti infection to impact the reproductive success of cetaceans, many of which are threatened species. The addition of another two cetacean species to the growing number from which B. ceti has been recovered also furth
